Case of type 2 diabetes possibly caused by excessive accumulation of visceral fat in a child born small-for-gestational age.

We encountered a 12-year-old boy with type 2 diabetes who was born small-for-gestational age. We described his clinical characteristics and a possible etiological factor for development of hyperglycemia. He developed well with sufficient nutrition and progressed to being overweight at 6 years-of-age as a result of a high-calorie, high-protein intake diet. He showed a diabetic pattern with a normal insulin response on an oral glucose tolerance test carried out with the urine glucose screening program at schools. He showed a large total fat area of 239.4 cm2 ; in particular, his visceral fat are

Precision of the Hologic DXA in the Assessment of Visceral Adipose Tissue.

INTRODUCTION: Visceral fat, also known as visceral adipose tissue (VAT), has been the focus of intensive research over the past several yr, as ground breaking studies have investigated its possible role in predicting long-term cardiac dysfunction, hypertension, and diabetes. Historically, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography were the instruments of choice for visceral fat quantification. However, with the introduction of visceral fat assessment software for Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scanners, DXA's use for VAT assessment has become increasingly common. To effectively

Micro-fragmented adipose tissue for treatment of knee osteoarthritis with Baker's cyst: a case study.

Adipose-derived therapies have increased in popularity for treatment of painful orthopaedic conditions, such as osteoarthritis. We report the passage of fat into a Baker's cyst after injection of micro-fragmented adipose tissue in a patient with bilateral knee arthritis. Following fat grafting, the patient required drainage of fatty fluid from within the Baker's cyst on multiple occasions. Approximately 3 months postprocedure, she began to notice an improvement in her knee pain with no further recurrence of pain or swelling from her Baker's cyst.

The association of visceral adiposity with cardiovascular events in patients with peripheral artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) suffer from a high incidence of cardiovascular events (CVE). Visceral adiposity has been implicated in promoting CVEs. This study aimed to assess the association of relative visceral adipose volume with incident cardiovascular events in patients with peripheral artery disease. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study including 260 patients with PAD who presented between 2003 and 2012. Cases were patients with diagnosed PAD including symptomatic lower limb athero-thrombosis and asymptomatic abdom

The Subcutaneous Adipose Microenvironment as a Determinant of Body Fat Development in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

CONTEXT: Adipose steroid metabolism modifies body fat development in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). OBJECTIVE: To determine whether subcutaneous (SC) abdominal adipose aldo-keto reductase 1C3 (AKR1C3; a marker of testosterone generation) is increased in normal-weight women with PCOS vs age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched normoandrogenic ovulatory women (controls) and is related to SC abdominal adipose activator protein-1 (AP-1; a marker of adipocyte differentiation) and/or androgen receptor (AR) protein expression in predicting fat accretion. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING:

Clinical features and imaging diagnostic challenges of fetus-in-fetu associated with abdominal cryptorchidism: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fetus-in-fetu (FIF) is a rare congenital anomaly in which a malformed monozygotic twin is incorporated within its host twin. FIF is usually retroperitoneal, whereas association with an intra-abdominal undescended testis is exceptionally uncommon. Because imaging may show a heterogeneous mass containing soft tissue, fat and calcified elements, FIF can be difficult to distinguish preoperatively from mature teratoma, especially when cryptorchidism is also present. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-day-old male neonate was admitted because of jaundice and a palpable right abdominal mass. Physica

Superficial vs Deep Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue: Sex-Specific Associations With Hepatic Steatosis and Metabolic Traits.

CONTEXT: Subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) is not homogeneous, as the fascia scarpa separates the deep SAT (dSAT) from the superficial SAT (sSAT). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the sex-specific associations of sSAT and dSAT with hepatic steatosis and metabolic syndrome in overweight individuals. METHODS: We recruited 285 individuals with a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 27 and aged 55 to 81 years. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging was performed around level L4 to L5 to measure visceral adipose tissue (VAT), dSAT, and sSAT volumes. The amount of hepatic fa

Clinical Impact of Subcutaneous Fat Area on Incisional Hernia Development Following Laparoscopic Colorectal Cancer Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Incisional hernia is a common complication experienced by patients who have undergone colorectal surgery. Visceral and subcutaneous fats have been implicated as risk factors; however, only a few studies have evaluated the role of abdominal wall musculature. Therefore, we examined the anatomical features of the intra-abdominal cavity and abdominal wall to identify risk factors for incisional hernia following laparoscopic colorectal resection. METHODS: This retrospective study involved 164 patients who underwent laparoscopic colorectal resection for cancer between January 2019 and

Cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between abdominal fat depots and cardiometabolic risk in a sample of Mexican adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between abdominal fat depots and cardiometabolic risk among youth is inconclusive due to the cross-sectional nature of existing studies and limitations in assessment methods. In this study, we examined cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) with cardiometabolic risk indicators among Mexican adolescents. METHODS: Participants (n = 169 at baseline and 134 at follow-up) were assessed for diastolic or systolic blood pressure (DBP or SBP), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein chol

Development and validation of computed tomography derived anthropometric regression equations for estimating abdominal adipose tissue distribution.

The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to develop multiple regression equations for predicting computed tomography (CT) derived intra-abdominal (IAF), subcutaneous (SCF), and total (TOTF= IAF+SCF) abdominal adipose tissue areas from anthropometric measures in adult white males with a large range of age (18-71 years) and percent body fat (2.0-40.6); and (2) to validate the new and existing equations that used similar Hounsfield Units (HU) for determining IAF for estimating these fat depots. One hundred fifty-one white male subjects had IAF, SCF, and TOTF determined by a single CT scan, skin

Visceral adiposity and metabolic syndrome after very high-fat and low-fat isocaloric diets: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Different aspects of dietary pattern, including macronutrient and food profiles, may affect visceral fat mass and metabolic syndrome. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that consuming energy primarily from carbohydrate or fat in diets with similar food profiles would differentially affect the ability to reverse visceral adiposity and metabolic syndrome. DESIGN: Forty-six men (aged 30-50 y) with body mass index (in kg/m2) >29 and waist circumference >98 cm were randomly assigned to a very high-fat, low-carbohydrate (VHFLC; 73% of energy fat and 10% of energy carbohydrate) or low-fat, high

Ultrasound estimated subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue thicknesses and risk of pre-eclampsia.

Early identification of high-risk pregnancies enables identification of those who would benefit from aspirin prophylaxis and increased surveillance for pre-eclampsia. A high body mass index (BMI) is a well-known predictor for pre-eclampsia. However, if abdominal adipose tissue distribution is associated with pre-eclampsia is limited investigated. Subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) thickness and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) thickness were measured by ultrasound on 3777 women at around 18 gestational weeks. SAT thickness was measured from the skin to linea alba and VAT from linea alba to the ant

Soft Tissue Sarcoma, Version 2.2022, NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are rare malignancies of mesenchymal cell origin that display a heterogenous mix of clinical and pathologic characteristics. STS can develop from fat, muscle, nerves, blood vessels, and other connective tissues. The evaluation and treatment of patients with STS requires a multidisciplinary team with demonstrated expertise in the management of these tumors. The complete NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines) for Soft Tissue Sarcoma provide recommendations for the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of extremity/superficial trunk/head and neck

Historical perspective: visceral obesity and related comorbidity in Joannes Baptista Morgagni's 'De sedibus et causis morborum per anatomen indagata'.

In recent years, advances in epidemiological approaches and laboratory technology, along with the availability of sophisticated imaging methods to evaluate body fat distribution, made it possible to define the close correlation between visceral fat accumulation and the occurrence of metabolic abnormalities, cardiovascular diseases and respiratory disturbances in obese patients. Some 250 y ago, JB Morgagni with the help of only a knife for anatomical dissection, an acute mind, and an observational skillfulness was able to identify the intra-abdominal and mediastinal fat accumulation in android

Cross-lag association between TyG-CVAI and frailty index: evidence from a natural population cohort in southwestern China.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a major public health challenge among middle-aged and older adults, closely associated with metabolic dysregulation and visceral fat accumulation. The product of the triglyceride-glucose index and the Chinese Visceral Adiposity Index (TyG-CVAI) comprehensively reflects insulin resistance and visceral adiposity, yet its bidirectional temporal association with the frailty index remains unclear. This study aimed to examine this bidirectional association using cross-lagged panel models and characterize the predominant prospective temporal association. METHODS: This study in

The Visceral Adiposity Index and Its Usefulness in the Prediction of Cardiometabolic Disorders.

Obesity is currently one of the most critical public health problems. Although there is no doubt that obesity is a significant risk factor for developing metabolic disorders, this relationship is not completely straightforward. On the one hand, some patients affected by obesity are metabolically unhealthy, while others are metabolically healthy; on the other hand, metabolic syndrome (MetS) can also occur in people with a normal body weight. A commonly used tool for diagnosing obesity is the body mass index (BMI), but the search for better anthropometric measures is ongoing due to the significa
