BACKGROUND/AIM: Fluid volume overload occurs in chronic kidney disease (CKD), leading to the compensatory release of natriuretic peptides. However, the elevated cardiac peptides may also be associated with malnutrition as well as volume overload.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) is a pathogenic, gram-negative, aerobic, and obligate intracellular parasite. Humans are primarily infected by inhaling aerosols formed from the feces of infected birds. Previously reported cases of C. psittaci infection are rare. The lack of specific clinical manifestations of psittacosis and the limited detection sensitivity of traditional methods lead to inadequate or delayed diagnosis. Intravenous infusion of hypertonic glucose induced a transitory paradoxical serum potassium elevation in 3 nondiabetic patients with selective hypoaldosteronism. The abnormal serum potassium response developed in spite of a normal insulin release and was abolished by pharmacological doses of mineralocorticoids in two. It is apparent that in certain patients with aldosterone deficiency normal insulin production alone cannot reverse completely the hyperosmolality-induced transfer of potassium from the intracellular to the extracellular fluid.

Rhabdomyolysis refers to the destruction or disintegration of striated muscles. This syndrome is characterized by muscle breakdown and necrosis, resulting in the leakage of intracellular muscle constituents into the circulation and extracellular fluid. We report a rare case of rhabdomyolysis complicating multi-organ failure caused by T-cell lymphoma in a 32-year-old woman. The final diagnosis was rhabdomyolysis caused by peripheral T-cell lymphoma based on bone marrow aspirate and biopsy.
