Clinical and demographic aspects of congenital pyloric stenosis in Israel.

A survey was made of 292 infants with congenital pyloric stenosis, diagnosed between 1967 and 1977 in seven hospitals in Israel. The incidence of the condition was estimated as 0.05 per 100 livebirths, and was higher among males, especially firstborn males. The incidence was higher among Oriental Jews than was thought, although the prevalence was higher among Ashkenazic Jews. The features of projectile vomiting, a pyloric olive and visible peristalsis were studied and their clinical and diagnostic significance was compared with that of radiological investigations. Concomitant anomalies and pos…

Living Kidney Donations in Israel: The Changing Impact of Religiosity.

Although the influence of religiosity on motivation to donate is established in the literature, this study inquires deeper to examine the impact of religiosity on a range of questions, such as perspectives on organ donation in general, postoperative experiences, and the role of the family in organ donation. Using data from a survey of 749 living kidney donors in Israel, we found that while religiosity levels serve as an indicator of willingness to donate a kidney to a stranger, they do not significantly impact the donors' postoperative experiences or perspectives. This study raises the questio…

The legacy of Mary Main in attachment and developmental research in Israel.

This article examines Mary Main's impact on attachment research in Israel and vice versa, focusing on her contributions: the disorganized attachment classification (D) and the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI). Israeli research spans Jewish and Arab populations, individuals with special needs, and trauma-affected groups, testing the Normativity, Sensitivity, and Competence hypotheses. While confirming traditional findings, some studies revealed deviations, possibly influenced by Israel's unique sociocultural/historical context. Some studies found an overrepresentation of disorganized and ambiva…

Genetic backgrounds and clinical characteristics of congenital neutropenias in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Congenital neutropenias are characterized by severe infections and a high risk of myeloid transformation; the causative genes vary across ethnicities. The Israeli population is characterized by an ethnically diverse population with a high rate of consanguinity. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical and genetic spectrum of congenital neutropenias in Israel. METHODS: We included individuals with congenital neutropenias listed in the Israeli Inherited Bone Marrow Failure Registry. Sanger sequencing was performed for ELANE or G6PC3, and patients with wild-type ELANE/G6PC3 were referred…

Serologic Diagnosis of Acute Rickettsiosis in Children in Southern Israel.

We assessed serology results of clinically suspected rickettsiosis episodes in the hospital setting. Overall, 322 of 963 (33%) cases were serology positive. Among those, rash rates were low (30%), murine typhus (MT) predominated over spotted fever and IgM positivity rate was higher in MT. These findings suggest that during acute rickettsiosis, serology may reliably identify MT infection but may underdiagnose spotted fever.

The aim of this study is to characterize the impact of COVID-19 on cardiac surgery in Israel. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study performed in two cardiac surgery departments in Israel and includes all pa…

Shuni virus in Israel: Neurological disease and fatalities in cattle.

The insect-transmitted Shuni virus (SHUV) belongs to the Simbu serogroup of orthobunyaviruses and it is known to induce abortions, stillbirths and severe congenital malformations in ruminants and may cause neurological signs in infected horses. Here, SHUV was detected in brain samples of two Israeli cattle, which suffered from severe neurological signs that led to the deaths of the animals. During histopathological examination of the first case, a 5-month-old calf, small perivascular cuffs, composed mainly of neutrophils with few lymphocytes were observed in the brain stem and cerebrum. Simila…

West Nile Virus: Seroprevalence in Animals in Palestine and Israel.

West Nile virus (WNV) epidemiological situation in Israel and Palestine, due to their unique location, draws attention following to the global spread of West Nile fever (WNF). Although much information is available from Israel on clinical cases and prevalence of WNV, clinical cases are rarely reported in Palestine, and prevalence is not known. The objectives of this study were to determine WNV seroprevalence in various domestic animals in Palestine and to reevaluate current seroprevalence, force of infection, and risk factors for WNV exposure in horses in Israel. Sera samples were collected fr…

Brucellosis Outbreak in Children and Adults in Two Areas in Israel.

Two parallel outbreaks of Brucella melitensis infection occurred in 2014 in two geographical areas in Israel. In two medical centers in northern Israel and one medical center in Jerusalem, 102 patients (58 children, 47 adults) were diagnosed with brucellosis. Most patients (N = 76, 72%) were Muslim Arabs, 28 (27%) were Druze, and one was Jewish. The source of infection was often traced to cheese from the Palestinian Authority. Biovar-1 was evident in 98% in northern Israel but only in 42% in Jerusalem. Most common manifestations were fever (82%) and osteoarticular symptoms (49%). The major dif…

Where to die? That is the question: A study of cancer patients in Israel.

OBJECTIVE: Most patients prefer to die at home, but barely 30% do so. This study examines the variables contributing to dying at home. METHODS: The participants were 326 cancer patients, of both genders, with a mean age of 63.25 years, who died from 2000 to 2008 and were treated by the palliative care unit of the Barzilai Hospital. Some 65.7% died at home and 33.4% in a hospital. The data were extracted from patient files. The examined variables were demographic (e.g., age, gender, marital status, ethnic background, number of years in Israel until death), medical (e.g., age at diagnosis, diag…
