Autoimmune Inflammatory Eye Disease: Demystifying Clinical Presentations for the Internist.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Provide a framework for recognizing key symptoms and clinical findings in patients with autoimmune inflammatory eye disease. RECENT FINDINGS: The most common manifestations of autoimmune inflammatory eye disease are episcleritis, scleritis, uveitis (anterior, intermediate, posterior, and panuveitis), and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Etiologies can be idiopathic or in association with a systemic autoimmune condition. Referral of patients who may have scleritis is critical for patients presenting with red eyes. Referral of patients who may have uveitis is critical for patients

Whole-bacterial cell enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for cell-bound Moraxella bovis pili.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), caused by Moraxella bovis, is a disease of major importance in cattle industry. M. bovis has several virulence factors among which pili are crucial antigen for the protective capacity of vaccines against this disease. The production of vaccines against IBK therefore requires a reliable technique for cellular piliation level assessment on cells to be included as vaccine components. In this study we describe a specific whole-bacterial cell enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (bact-ELISA) capable of detecting pili antigen on M. bovis cell surface. A seq

Bacteria and nematodes in the conjunctiva of mule deer from Wyoming and Utah.

Swabs of conjunctiva were collected from 44 live and 226 hunter-harvested mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Wyoming and Utah (USA). We identified 29 gram negative and 22 gram positive bacterial taxonomic categories, but many isolates from hunter-harvested animals were environmental contaminants. Staphylococcus spp. and Micrococcus spp. were the most common gram positive bacteria isolated, and Enterobacter spp., Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas spp. were common gram negative bacteria isolated. Thelazia californiensis were found in 15% of hunter-harvested deer in Utah in 1994 and in 8% in 19

Eczema Herpeticum: A Fatal Rash That Mimics Many.

Eczema herpeticum (EH) is a potentially life-threatening condition, especially in the pediatric population, that occurs among patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). AD is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder with a complex pathophysiology that predisposes patients to EH. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1 is implicated in 90 % of EH cases and often initially presents with gingivostomatitis. HSV 1 can also lead to more systemic disease such as keratoconjunctivitis, meningitis, encephalitis, and hepatitis. Rapid diagnosis of EH is vital, and prompt treatment is essential to preclude these complications

[Long-term time series analysis of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan].

PURPOSE: Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) is a highly infectious disease caused by an adenovirus and is associated with nosocomial or endemic infections. In a series analysis before 1993, we predicted that EKC patients would decrease in Okinawa. We analyzed the number of EKC patients after 1993 in the same area to confirm the compatibility between measured and predicted epidemic curves. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The numbers of EKC patients reported by the National Epidemic Surveillance Report of Japan between 1993 and 2003 in Okinawa were analyzed by time series analysis. RESULTS: The epidemi

Compounding for feline herpetic keratitis.

Feline herpetic keratitis (infectious keratoconjunctivitis), an infection of the conjunctiva and cornea that is common in cats, involves a three-pronged treatment approach: (1)antiviral therapy, (2)immunomodulatory therapy, and (3)antibacterial therapy. Since very few agents have been approved for the treatment of feline herpetic keratitis, and many of the drugs that were approved at one time for this indication can no longer be purchased, compounding pharmacists can play a vital role in the prevention and treatment of this infection. Investigators at the Colorado State University College of V

Identification of Long Noncoding RNAs Involved in Eyelid Pigmentation of Hereford Cattle.

Several ocular pathologies in cattle, such as ocular squamous cell carcinoma and infectious keratoconjunctivitis, have been associated with low pigmentation of the eyelids. The main objective of this study was to analyze the transcriptome of eyelid skin in Hereford cattle using strand-specific RNA sequencing technology to characterize and identify long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs). We compared the expression of lncRNAs between pigmented and unpigmented eyelids and analyzed the interaction of lncRNAs and putative target genes to reveal the genetic basis underlying eyelid pigmentation in cattle. We

Evaluation of anti-Moraxella bovis pili immunoglobulin-A in tears following intranasal vaccination of cattle.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a highly contagious ocular disease of cattle caused by Moraxella bovis (Mb). Parenterally administered immunogens used to prevent the disease do not offer complete protection possibly because they stimulate a poor ocular mucosal secretory response, in which locally secreted immunoglobulin-A (sIgA) is one of the main components. The principal aim of this study was to evaluate by an indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the local ocular mucosal sIgA response against Mb purified pili, produced after intranasal inoculation of experiment

Characterisation and quantitation of pilus antigens of Moraxella bovis by ELISA.

Hyperimmune serums raised in rabbits to purified pili from 9 Australian and 2 American strains of Moraxella bovis from infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) affected herds were used to study the degree of binding between combinations of antigen and antiserum in a conventional enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). With the aid of appropriate absorption tests major antigenic differences among pili were found permitting 6 distinct serogroups to be recognised. Further, production of specific antiserums to representative strains of each serogroup in goats facilitated the development of

Corneal complications of vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a severe bilateral chronic allergic inflammatory disease of the ocular surface. In most of the cases, the disease is limited to the tarsal conjunctiva and to the limbus. However, in the more severe cases, the cornea may be involved, leading to potentially sight threatening complications. Prompt recognition of these complications is crucial in the management of VKC, which is one of the most severe ocular allergic diseases. RECENT FINDINGS: A vicious cycle of inflammation occurs as a result of a set of reciprocal interactions between the c

Short communication: Iodine concentrations in serum, milk, and tears after feeding Ascophyllum nodosum to dairy cows-A pilot study.

Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum) is rich in iodine and often fed by organic dairy producers as a mineral supplement to support animal health. A commonly held belief is that kelp supplementation decreases susceptibility to infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis due to increased iodine concentrations in tears. Whereas serum and milk iodine concentrations are positively correlated and modulated by oral iodine supplementation, nothing is known about the iodine concentration of tears. Therefore, the 3 objectives of this pilot study were to determine (1) the iodine content of tears, milk, and serum of cow

Causes of conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis in Karachi, Pakistan.

The causes of conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis in 388 patients who attended eye casualty departments in Karachi, Pakistan, during a 5 month period were investigated. Most of these infections were diagnosed as adenovirus (291, 75%) or bacterial (71, 18.3%). Of the remainder, 9 cases (2.3%) were caused by herpes simplex virus and 7 (1.8%) by Chalmydia trachomatis. There was no evidence of typical active trachoma in this urban population. Bacteria or Candida albicans were also grown from 44 of the adenovirus cases (15%). Many of the bacteria grown from eyes in this study were resistant to

The concentration of penicillin in bovine conjunctival sac fluid as it pertains to the treatment of Moraxella bovis infection. (I) Subconjunctival injection.

Single dose, subconjunctival injections of procaine penicillin using either skin or conjunctival routes of administration were evaluated in order to compare the duration of antibacterial concentrations at the site of Moraxella bovis infection. Samples of conjunctival sac fluid (CF) were collected using blunted capillary tubes and were periodically assayed for penicillin by an agar-well-diffusion technique. Linear regression lines were constructed for concentration of penicillin-time profiles. Similarity of the regression slopes for each treatment enabled the construction of three common lines

Pathogenesis of corneal lesions caused by Moraxella bovis in gnotobiotic calves.

Moraxella bovis was instilled into the conjunctival sac of gnotobiotic calves and corneas were sampled serially after infection. Lesions developed in seven of eight infected calves, but were absent in a noninfected control calf. Histologically, M. bovis was first seen in foci of swollen epithelium and within basal epithelial cells adjacent to ulcers. Corneal ulcers were severe in later stages of infection; fibrin deposits, neutrophils, and bacteria were present in the stromas. Examination of early lesions by scanning electron microscopy showed M. bovis in pits on the surfaces of dark epithelia

Genotype classification of Moraxella bovis using MALDI-TOF MS profiles.

Moraxella bovis (M. bovis) is regarded as a causative agent of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), the most common ocular disease of cattle. Recently, whole genome sequencing identified the presence of two distinct genotypes within M. bovis that differ in chromosome content, potential virulence factors, as well as prophage and plasmid profiles. It is unclear if the genotypes equally associate with IBK or if one is more likely to be isolated from IBK lesions. We utilized 39 strains of M. bovis that had previously undergone whole genome sequencing and genotype classification to determi

Gap analysis of Mycoplasma bovis disease, diagnosis and control: An aid to identify future development requirements.

There is a worldwide problem of disease caused by Mycoplasma (M.) bovis in cattle; it has a significant detrimental economic and animal welfare impact on cattle rearing. Infection can manifest as a plethora of clinical signs including mastitis, pneumonia, arthritis, keratoconjunctivitis, otitis media and genital disorders that may result in infertility and abortion. Current diagnosis and control information are reviewed and analysed to identify gaps in knowledge of the causative organism in respect of the disease pathology, diagnosis and control methods. The main considerations are as follows:

Regulation of Human Adenovirus Replication by RNA Interference.

Adenoviruses cause a wide variety of human infectious diseases. Adenoviral conjunctivitis and epidemic keratoconjunctivitis are commonly associated with human species D adenoviruses. Currently, there is no sufficient or appropriate treatment to counteract these adenovirus infections. Thus, there is an urgent need for new etiology-directed therapies with selective activity against human adenoviruses. To address this problem, the adenoviral early genes E1A and E2B (viral DNA polymerase) seem to be promising targets. Here, we propose an effective approach to downregulate the replication of human
