Diagnosis of postpartum infections: clinical criteria are better than laboratory parameter.

BACKGROUND: Physiologic increases in the leukocyte count and segmental neutrophil percentage during pregnancy alter the ability of these indices to predict infection. METHODS: Women with cesarean deliveries were assessed by leukocyte counts and segmented neutrophil percentage as well as clinical signs to detect postoperative infection. RESULTS: In 157 consecutive patients undergoing cesarean deliveries there was a significant physiologic increase between the preoperative and postoperative leukocyte count (12.4 +/- 3.9/uL vs. 14.8 +/- 3.4/uL, P < 0.001). The leukocyte count after delivery did

[Etiology of bacterial infections in febrile neutropenic patients: the role of the laboratory in the diagnosis].

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL EVOLUTION: Until the mid-eighties, infectious complications (pneumonia, septicemia) observed in neutropenic patients were, in 70% of cases, of bacterial origin with Gram negative bacillae (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) isolated 8 times out of 10. Among the Gram positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus predominated. The etiological profile of bacterial infections has since evolved with a predominance (60 to 70%) of Gram positive bacteria (coagulase-negative staphylococci, viridans streptococci) and a change in the epidemiology of the Gram positive bact

Laboratory-acquired West Nile virus infections--United States, 2002.

West Nile virus (WNV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus introduced recently to North America, is a human, equine, and avian neuropathogen. The majority of human infections with WNV are mosquito-borne; however, laboratory-acquired infections with WNV and other arboviruses also occur. This report summarizes two recent cases of WNV infection in laboratory workers without other known risk factors who acquired infection through percutaneous inoculation. Laboratory workers handling fluids or tissues known or suspected to be WNV-infected should minimize their risk for exposure and should report injuries a

[Laboratory diagnosis of cytomegaloviral infection in patients with anemia and hemoblastosis in the Omsk region].

Research was carried out in 335 blood specimens of patients in the age of 3-35 y.o. in order to optimize diagnosis and treatment of such patients with aplastic anemia and hemoblastosis who got hemotransfunction to eliminate cytomegaloviral infection (CMVI). IgM were found out in 37.9% cases (2.8 times higher than in donors), low-avide IgG--in 44.8%. "early" proteins CMV--29.9% and DNA--in 36.8% cases. Concerning the DNA presence, preference was given to research of leucocytic suspension compared with blood serum. Of 28 children of 3-13 y.o. with anemia being seropositive in CMV, IgG antibodies

[Legionella sp.--laboratory diagnosis of infections in humans and detection in environmental water].

Legionella sp. is the etiological agent of Legionnaires Disease and the Pontiac Fever, one of the new emerging diseases. Legionella are common in natural environment but in low number of bacteria cells, especially in comparison to other bacterial flora. Because of special nutritious requirement and long time of Legionella generation, the isolation of bacteria and the diagnosis of legionellosis cause many problems. In this publication some methods for detection of Legionella sp. in environmental water and clinical samples are presented and evaluated.

Susceptibility of laboratory mice to intranasal and contact infection with coronaviruses of other species.

The susceptibility of laboratory mice to intranasal and contact infection with mouse hepatitis virus (MHV)-related coronaviruses was tested in infant CD1 mice. One day old mouse pups were inoculated intranasally with respiratory MHV-S, enteric MHV-Y, rat sialodacryoadenitis virus (SDAV), human coronavirus OC43 (HCV-OC43) or bovine coronavirus (BCV). Twenty-four hours later, they were placed in direct contact with age matched sham inoculated pups. Indices of infection in virus inoculated mice included lesions by histopathology and viral antigen by immunoperoxidase histochemistry in brain, lung,

A review of eosinophil chemotaxis and function in Taenia taeniaeformis infections in the laboratory rat.

The eosinophil has long been associated with diseases of acute hypersensitivity and with parasite infections, but its exact role in the pathogenesis of these conditions remains uncertain. Characterization of factors associated with migration of eosinophils into tissues has helped to elucidate eosinophil function. Eosinophil chemotactic factors associated with acute hypersensitivity reactions include the eosinophil chemotactic factors of anaphylaxis, histamine, and arachidonic acid metabolites, all of which are released from mast cells, and the lymphokine eosinophil stimulation promoter (ESP).

Comparison of the sensitivity of microscopy and culture in the laboratory diagnosis of intestinal protozoal infection.

Concentration of protozoal cysts from faeces by the formol-ether method and faecal culture on Robinson's medium were studied to determine their diagnostic value among patients attending a sexually transmitted diseases clinic in Edinburgh. Of 450 men studied Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia were identified in the faeces of 10.7 and 5.1% respectively. Thirty (81.1%) of 37 men with E histolytica and 11 (47.8%) of 23 men with G lamblia infections would not have been identified if formol-ether concentration had not been undertaken. Culture of faeces in Robinson's medium led to the detectio

Common host antigens in laboratory rats infected with the metacestodes of Taenia crassiceps.

Laboratory rats were infected by intra-peritoneal injection with the metacestodes of Taenia crassiceps. A soluble extract was prepared from the metacestodes removed from the peritoneal cavity of the rats. Double-diffusion, immuno-electrophoresis and fluorescent labelled antibody staining techniques were used. The extract tested against rabbit anti-normal rat serum was found to contain an antigen common to both the host and the parasite.

Laboratory-acquired infection in clinical laboratories and the incidence rate after Brucella exposure risk events: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Personnel in clinical microbiology laboratories face heightened risks of occupational infections, due to the potential for pathogenicity in clinical samples. AIM: To summarize the characteristics of laboratory-acquired infections (LAIs) and review exposure incidents in clinical laboratories, and to conduct a meta-analysis to estimate post-exposure incidence rates and evaluate the efficacy of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following Brucella exposures. METHODS: A systematic search across PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang, CMB, and the ABSA LAI database extracted relev

The challenges of Candidozyma auris: updates on the laboratory investigation, infection prevention and management.

Candidozyma (also known as Candida) auris, now comprising six clades, has emerged globally as an important cause of nosocomial infection and outbreaks. Unique and concerning characteristics include its ability to persist in the environment and resist disinfectants and antifungals, as well as a propensity to cause invasive infection with mortality from bloodstream infections estimated at >40%. Other challenges have included isolation and identification in the laboratory, though newer enrichment protocols, chromogenic media, and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight mass spe

Pediatric central nervous system infections in the Amazon: clinical and laboratory profiles.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) infections are important causes of mortality and morbidity in children, and they are related to severe problems such as hearing loss, neurological sequelae, and death. The objective was to describe clinical and laboratory exam profiles of children who were diagnosed with CNS infections. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study based on medical records, which included pediatric patients aged from 3 months to 15 years, with a clinical suspicion of CNS infection between January 2014 to December 2019. The pathogens were confirmed in cerebrospinal flui
