[Changes of lactate levels in diabetic ketoacidosis and in newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus].

Introduction: It is known that lactate concentration is increased in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), however, the pathophysiology and kinetics of lactate changes are still unclear. Normally, L-lactate is the major form in the human body. According to previous data, also D- and L-lactate might be increased in hyperglycaemic disorders. Aim: We aimed to describe the kinetics and mechanisms of lactate concentration changes in ketoacidosis and newly diagnosed diabetes. Method: We performed a prospective study, including 5-18-year-old children with ketoacidosis (DKA, n = 13) and with newly diagnosed ty

Recent advances in reprogramming lactate metabolism in polycystic ovary syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent and complex endocrine disorder affecting 4–20% of women of reproductive age worldwide. It is characterized by dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, weight gain, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. An imbalance in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis is an important pathophysiological basis of PCOS. Lactate, a glycolytic product and an important energy source, also regulates gene transcription through histone lactylation, a novel post-translational modification. Emerging evidence highlights the crucial role of lactate and lactylation in c

Effect of diseases, production, and season on traumatic reticuloperitonitis and ruminal acidosis in dairy cattle.

Logistic regression was used to investigate the effects of host characteristics, production, and 23 veterinary diagnoses on the risks of two reticuloruminal disorders, ruminal acidosis and traumatic reticuloperitonitis among 61,124 Finnish Ayrshire cows. Lactational incidence risks were .3% for ruminal acidosis and .6% for traumatic reticuloperitonitis. The relative risk of ruminal acidosis was not related to parity, whereas the risk of traumatic reticuloperitonitis decreased with increasing parity. The risk of traumatic reticuloperitonitis was not related to milk yield of individual affected

WITHDRAWN: Treatments for breast engorgement during lactation.

BACKGROUND: National surveys have shown that painful breasts are the second most common reason for giving up breastfeeding in the first two weeks after birth in the UK. One factor contributing to such pain can be breast engorgement. Views differ as to how engorgement arises, although restrictive feeding patterns in hospital are likely to have contributed in the past. These differing views are reflected in the range of solutions offered to treat engorgement in breastfeeding mothers and these treatments are assessed in this review. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of any proposed interventi

Dancing with death at pH 6.8 and lactate of 29 mmol/L: extreme survival in severe metformin-associated lactic acidosis - a case report.

Lactic acidosis is a serious metabolic disorder characterized by an accumulation of lactate in the body, which can lead to a severe acid-base imbalance. Metformin-associated lactic acidosis is a rare but life-threatening complication of metformin therapy, particularly in the setting of acute kidney injury or other conditions that impair lactate clearance. In this case report, we present the remarkable survival of a patient who experienced severe metformin-associated lactic acidosis with a blood pH of 6.8 and a lactate level of 29 mmol/L, which are typically considered incompatible with life.

[Blood acid-base balance of sportsmen during physical activity].

The aim of this study was to investigate the acid-base balance parameters in blood of sportsmen by physical activity. Before exercise lactate concentration in blood was normal. Carbon dioxide pressure (рСО2), bicarbonate concentration (НСО3 -), base excess (BE), were increased immediately after physical activity lactate concentration increased, while pH, BE, НСО3 -, рСО2 decreased in capillary blood of sportsmen. These changes show the development of lactate-acidosis which is partly compensated with bicarbonate buffering system and respiratory alkalosis. During postexercise recovery lactate co

Changes in Lactate-related Fecal Microbiome in Hyperlactatemia Diabetic Dogs.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The correlation between the intestinal microbiome and endocrine disorders has recently been drawing attention as an important key for determining their pathology and clinical assessment. In this study, we evaluated the microbiome of dogs with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) with respect to blood lactate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fecal samples were obtained from 17 subjects and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction determinations were performed to quantify the gene expression levels of lactate-producing and dysbiosis index-related bacteria. RESULTS: Express

Lactate/lactylation in ocular development and diseases.

Lactylation, a post-translational modification (PTM) induced by lactate, has crucial roles in the regulation of transcription, DNA repair, and mitochondrial metabolism. Here, we discuss the role of lactate/lactylation signaling in regulating eye morphogenesis and retinal homeostasis, as well as various ophthalmic disorders, such as myopia, intraocular malignancies, and retinal angiogenesis.

Inflammatory stress disrupts retinal lactate homeostasis under high-altitude hypoxia.

The retina is a highly metabolically active tissue that is particularly sensitive to hypoxic stress, yet how its metabolic homeostasis is maintained under hypobaric hypoxia and modified by inflammation remains unclear. Here, we investigated retinal lactate dynamics and their functional role under hypoxia alone and combined hypoxic-inflammatory stress using a murine model of simulated high-altitude hypobaric hypoxia (7 km). Retinal lactate levels remained stable during acute hypoxic exposure (3-24 h), in contrast to transient brain lactate elevation and a gradual decline in blood lactate. Howev
