A new strategy to build caged-compounds is presented. The approach is based on heterolytic photocleavage of a metal-ligand bond in a coordination compound. A ruthenium polypyridine complex, containing the neurocompound 4-amino pyridine (4AP) is used as the core of the phototrigger. The biomolecule is released by irradiation with visible light (>480 nm). The liberated 4AP promotes the activation of a leech neuron by means of blocking its K+ channels. The syntesis, characterization, and the inherent advantages of this method are discussed.

We describe the replantation of a traumatically severed auricle using microvascular anastomosis to reestablish blood flow to the ear. Microvascular reattachment of the severed auricle occurred 10 hours after the trauma. Postoperatively, adjunctive measures, including anticoagulation and the use of medicinal leeches, were used to relieve venous congestion of the replanted auricle. The effects of stocking density and exchanging water frequency on growth, digestive enzyme activity, anti-oxidative enzyme and inner quality of Whitmania pigra Whitman were evaluated with corresponding measures. This is a case report of two patients with traumatic amputated lip due to respectively human bite and bicycle head-on-car collision. Both patients were successfully treated by microsurgical replantation within 24 hours and with post-operative leech treatment. Furthermore, a MEDLINE/PubMed search was performed for all scientific English articles of lip amputation and replantation using microsurgery. We want to address the importance of preserving amputated parts and the necessity of 24-hour access to plastic surgery and microsurgery in trauma if needed.

A clinical study of 67 female schizophrenics was conducted. Thirty two patients of them treated with the Shuizhi (leech)-Dahuang (rhubarb) mixture mainly with low dosage of antipsychotic drugs (combined therapy group), while other 35 cases were treated with antipsychotic drugs only (control group). The result showed that their overall therapeutic effects were similar and the combined therapy group could reduce the dosages of antipsychotic drugs and its side effects, and tended to normalize the hemorheologic indices.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to present our experience with patients who underwent traumatic ear amputation.
METHODS: Between January 1988 and April 2002, 10 patients sustained ear amputations. BACKGROUND: Leech-derived inhibitors have a prominent role in the development of new antithrombotic drugs, because some of them are able to block the blood coagulation cascade. Hirustasin, a serine protease inhibitor from the leech Hirudo medicinalis, binds specifically to tissue kallikrein and possesses structural similarity with antistasin, a potent factor Xa inhibitor from Haementeria officinalis. Upper lip trauma with tissue loss due to dog bites is relatively common; however, reports of replantation of amputated lip tissue remain rare. Even fewer studies have documented long-term changes in graft tissue or the implementation of revision surgery after replantation. We present a case of upper lip replantation after a dog bite, with follow-up and subsequent revision surgery conducted.
