Analysis of the Frequency and Mechanism of Injury to Warfighters in the Under-body Blast Environment.

During Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, improvised explosive devices were used strategically and with increasing frequency. To effectively design countermeasures for this environment, the Department of Defense identified the need for an under-body blast-specific Warrior Injury Assessment Manikin (WIAMan). To help with this design, information on Warfighter injuries in mounted under-body blast attacks was obtained from the Joint Trauma Analysis and Prevention of Injury in Combat program through their Request for Information interface. The events selected were evaluated by

Predicting return to play after hamstring injuries.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on the prognostic value of clinical and MRI parameters for the time to return to play (TTRTP) in acute hamstring injuries showed only limited to moderate evidence for the various investigated parameters. Some studies had multiple methodological limitations, including retrospective designs and the use of univariate analysis only. The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic value of clinical and MRI parameters for TTRTP using multivariate analysis. METHODS: 28 clinical and MRI parameters were prospectively investigated for an association with TTRTP in 80 non-

Injury Source and Correlation Analysis of Riders in Car-Electric Bicycle Accidents.

The knowledge about the injury source and correlation of riders in car-electric bicycle accident will be helpful in the cross validation of traces and vehicle safety design. In order to know more information about such kind of knowledge, 57 true car-electric bicycle accidents were reconstructed by PC-Crash and then data on injury information of riders were collected directly from the reconstructed cases. These collected data were validated by some existing research results firstly, and then 4 abnormal cases were deleted according to the statistical method. Finally, conclusions can be obtained

Long term results of compartment syndrome of the lower limb in polytraumatised patients.

Acute compartment syndrome represents a severe complication after trauma of the lower extremity. To date, there is limited knowledge about the outcome of compartment syndrome of the lower limb in patients with multiple injuries. We hypothesised that multiple injuries worsen the long term results of compartment syndrome of the lower leg. Patients who underwent fasciotomy for established compartment syndrome of the lower leg from 1999 to 2004 in our level 1 trauma centre were included. Demographic data, additional injuries (Injury Severity Score) and method of treatment were analysed. Outcome as

Case series analysis of hindfoot injuries sustained by drivers in frontal motor vehicle crashes.

Improvements to vehicle frontal crashworthiness have led to reductions in toe pan and instrument panel intrusions as well as leg, foot, and ankle loadings in standardized crash tests. Current field data, however, suggests the proportion of foot and ankle injuries sustained by drivers in frontal crashes has not decreased over the past two decades. To explain the inconsistency between crash tests results and real world lower limb injury prevalence, this study investigated the injury causation scenario for the specific hind-foot injury patterns observed in frontal vehicle crashes. Thirty-four cas

Jockey injuries in the United States.

CONTEXT: In the sport of horse racing, the position of the jockey and speed of the horse predispose the jockey to risk of injury. OBJECTIVE: To estimate rates of medically treated injuries among professional jockeys and identify patterns of injury events. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey from data compiled by an insurance broker. Information on the cause of injury, location on the track, and body part injured was evaluated. SETTING: Official races at US professional racing facilities (n = 114) from January 1, 1993, through December 31, 1996. PARTICIPANTS: A licensed jockey population of appr

Sports injuries in adolescents' ball games: soccer, handball and basketball.

In a prospective study of 302 adolescent players in three ball games (soccer, handball and basketball), 119 incurred injuries. The injury incidence (number of injuries per 1000 playing hours) was 5.6 in soccer, 4.1 in handball and 3.0 in basketball. Ankle sprains accounted for 25 per cent of the injuries, finger sprains 32 per cent, strains in the thigh and leg 10 per cent, and tendinitis/apophysitis 12 per cent. The most serious injuries were four fractures, one anterior cruciate ligament rupture, and two meniscus lesions. The most serious injuries, with the longest rehabilitation period, occ

Skiing injuries in children and adults: a comparative study from an 8-year period.

The investigation is a retrospective analysis of 2756 skiing injuries from two centers in a Swedish skiing area during the years 1972 to, and including, 1979. The relative frequency of lower extremity injuries successively diminished, while a corresponding increase of upper extremity injuries was found. The relative frequency of ankle and foot injuries declined, while the frequency of knee injuries did not change, knee injuries still being the most common skiing injury. The relative frequency of fractures of the lower leg showed a statistically significant decrease, but, in children, constitut

Traumatic dissection and thrombosis of the popliteal artery in a child.

Injuries of the popliteal artery have the highest rate of limb loss compared with other peripheral vascular injuries. Particularly, blunt popliteal artery trauma is known to be associated with a high rate of amputation. Traumatic vascular injuries are usually associated with dislocations and fractures. We describe the radiographic findings as well as the delayed presentation and management of a crush injury of the left leg in an 8-year-old girl resulting in dissection of the popliteal artery without a dislocation or fracture.

Injury incidence and prevalence in elite short-course triathletes: a 4-year prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To characterise the prevalence, incidence rate (IR) and burden of injuries in elite short-course triathletes over a 4-year traini … d in time loss, with the majority occurring during training activities. Foot, ankle and other lower leg injuries had the highest incidence, with BSIs carrying the highest injury burden. The considerably higher rate of BSI observed in female athletes warrants consideration for future prevention strategies in female triathletes.

Neurological recovery after traumatic Cauda Equina syndrome due to glass fragments: An unusual case.

Penetrating spinal injuries with foreign bodies are exceedingly rare. To date, pathological problems due to glass fragments in the spinal canal have rarely been reported. In this report, the case presenting with a back laceration, leg pain, and leg weakness was found to have glass frag-ments in the spinal canal at the L2-L3 level by lumbar computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. After L2 total laminectomy and retrieval of the glass fragments, the dura was re-paired. The patient was discharged from the hospital after complete neurological recovery. In cases of spinal canal injuries

The use of Integra with a sensate fasciocutaneous pedicled flap for the salvage reconstruction of a below knee amputation after pedestrian vs train multi-planar degloving injury.

Degloving injuries occur when there is sufficient tangential force to a body surface to disrupt the structures connecting skin and subcutaneous tissues to the superficial fascia. There may also be associated injuries to the underlying soft tissues, bone, nerves and vessels. The injury may be so severe that the limb is non-viable and requires amputation. Our patient sustained a severe lower limb degloving injury after an accident where the leg was caught and dragged along the platform by a train. There was insufficient skin to cover a below knee amputation stump. So, the dermal regeneration tem

Persuasive of lateral supra malleolar flap for distal leg and foot reconstruction. A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Distal leg and foot have unique anatomical characteristics, and multiple etiologies may cause defects in various patterns that mandate reconstruction. Local flaps, such as perforator flaps, can give good outcomes with less complication. The lateral supra malleolar flap can effectively cover the distal leg and foot defect. In this article, we highlight the utility of this flap and its outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study is a descriptive, retrospective, multi-center, hospital-based performed to assess the efficacy of lateral supra malleolar flap in the reconstruction of dist

Aquatic antagonists: stingray injury update.

Stingrays cause more sting-related injuries than any other fish. Their venom and mechanism of injury lead to painful, poor-healing wounds that often become infected. Stingray injuries are further complicated by retained barbs and foreign bodies, which also may lead to considerable morbidity. Most stingray injuries can be treated with hot water immersion, wound debridement, and prophylactic antibiotics, while some may require more extensive treatment and surgical intervention at a tertiary care center. Educating patients about avoidance strategies, such as wading through water with a shuffling

Indications for the application of Wagner's method of external fixation across the knee joint.

External fixation with Wagner's apparatus can, because of its mechanical properties, be employed for temporary immobilization of the knee joint. This method is especially suitable for patients for whom immobilization in plaster is problematic or disadvantageous. It can be applied to the following categories of patients: Patients with injuries to the bones or ligaments of the knee which are associated with wounds or injuries of the blood vessels or nerves; Patients with multiple injuries of the leg (e.g., fractures of the tibia and femur) and concomitant intra-articular knee injuries; Patients
