Using mass spectrometry to detect hydrolysed gluten in beer that is responsible for false negatives by ELISA.

Gluten is the collective name for a class of proteins found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. Eating gluten triggers an inappropriate auto-immune reaction in ∼70 million people globally affected by coeliac disease, where the gut reacts to gluten proteins and this triggers an immune response, resulting in intestinal inflammation and damage. Gluten-free foods are now commonplace, however, it is difficult to accurately determine the gluten content of products claiming to be gluten-free using current methodologies as the antibodies are non-specific, show cross-reactivity and have different affinitie

Determination of grave disability.

There is a historical dilemma concerning the civil rights of psychiatric patients who are believed to need a protected status because of incompetency. California's Lanterman-Petris-Short Act provides a mechanism for putting the patient under the care of a conservator if the patient is unable to provide for his own personal needs of food, clothing, and shelter. If successful, this legislation will likely be the model for the country. Fifty-one patients for whom the clinical staff desired to initiate conservatorship proceedings were given a test consisting of behavioral tasks specifically design

Implications of Federal Nutrition Policy Changes for Maternal and Child Health.

Signed into law on July 4, 2025, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) fundamentally changes the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the largest food assistance program in the United States and a key support for maternal and child food and nutrition security. The OBBBA reduces SNAP eligibility, expands work requirements, eliminates nutrition education, prevents future benefit increases, and shifts significant costs to states. Combined, these changes may have a direct negative effect on women and children who rely on SNAP for adequate nutrition and may also reduce their access to

Eroding the foundation: health and social needs of adult SNAP participants in an era of policy change.

In 2025, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) was at the center of policy debate. SNAP-specific provisions within the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" (OBBBA) will affect about 42 million low-income participants. To ground policy proposals and national discourse in evidence, we (1) summarize the characteristics of adult SNAP participants and then (2) describe how recent legislation and proposals may affect them. Using data from 34 states and the District of Columbia, approximately 1 in 10 adults in our sample reported SNAP participation in the last 12 months. Compared to non-partic

Global insights on the diagnosis, management, and prevention of pediatric ingestions: A report from the FISPGHAN expert panel.

This is a comprehensive review of pediatric foreign body (FB) ingestions, emphasizing the global burden, epidemiology, and management strategies. Predominantly occurring in children under 6, with a peak between 6 months and 3 years, these incidents pose significant health risks with substantial regional variations in ingested objects-ranging from household items to caustic substances. The pathophysiological effects of ingestions are outlined, highlighting specific dangers associated with button batteries, sharp objects, and caustic agents, which can lead to severe tissue damage and long-term c

Optimization and Validation of a New Microbial Inhibition Test for the Detection of Antimicrobial Residues in Living Animals Intended for Human Consumption.

Even though antibiotics are necessary in livestock production, they can be harmful not only due to their toxicity, but also in view of their contribution to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Screening tests based on microbial growth inhibition appeared to be useful tools to prevent its entry into the food chain. They have nevertheless been traditionally carried out post mortem, leading to great economical loss and harm to the environment in case a positive sample is found. Hence, the objective was to evaluate the use of a screening test as an ante mortem alternative for the detection

Stability of pesticides' residues under ultraviolet germicidal irradiation.

Legislation for food safety is limited mostly to pesticides monitoring and no attention is paid to the presence and toxicity of by-products formed after pesticide application. Stability studies of three selected transformation products: IMP - 2-isopropyl-6-methyl-4-pyrimidinol (diazinon hydrolysis product), TCP - 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (chlorpyrifos transformation product), and 6CNA - 6-chloronicotinic acid (imidacloprid and acetamiprid transformation product) were performed under exposure to sunlight at room temperature (22 °C) and in the dark at 4 °C over 90 days. The results showed sli

Prevalence and biofilm-forming ability of Listeria monocytogenes in New Zealand mussel (Perna canaliculus) processing plants.

Greenshell™ mussels are New Zealand's largest seafood export species. Some export markets require compliance with 'zero' tolerance legislation for Listeria monocytogenes in 25 g of product. Even though individually quick frozen (IQF) mussel products are labeled 'to be cooked', and are not classified as ready-to-eat, some markets still require them to comply with the strict policy. Three mussel processing plants were assessed for the pattern of L. monocytogenes contamination on raw material, environment, food contact surfaces, and in the final product. Cultures (n = 101) obtained from an indust

Detection of Staphylococcus aureus and enterotoxin genotype diversity in Monte Veronese, a Protected Designation of Origin Italian cheese.

AIMS: To evaluate the risk associated with the load and enterotoxigenicity of Staphylococcus aureus in Monte Veronese, a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) cheese of the Lessinia area (Verona, Italy). METHODS AND RESULTS: Staphylococcus aureus was quantified by a conventional culture method and by a nucA targeted real-time PCR assay developed in this study. Staphylococcus aureus numbers in cheese were higher than the limit tolerated by the Italian food legislation in 78% instances, according to both detection methods. Multiplex PCR tests for 17 Staph. aureus enterotoxin (SE) genes were app

Environmental Risk Assessment in Pharmaceutical Regulation: A Comparative Review of EMA, U.S. FDA and CDSCO Guidelines.

Environmental contamination by pharmaceutical residues accumulation in water bodies, risk of ecological disturbance and development of antimicrobial resistance have become a serious global threat. Pharmaceutical active ingredients and metabolites of these substances expelled into the surrounding environment by excretion, industrial wastewater and improper disposal practices result in measurable levels in surface waters and wastewater globally. In response, regulatory authorities incorporated Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) requirements into the drug licensing system. For human medicinal pr

Investigation into a national outbreak of STEC O157:H7 associated with frozen beef burgers, UK, 2017.

In November 2017, Public Health England identified an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 in England where whole genome sequencing results indicated cases were likely to be linked to a common source, and began investigations. Hypothesis generation included a review of enhanced surveillance data, a case-case study and trawling interviews. The hypothesis of interest was tested through the administration of focussed questionnaires and review of shopping history using loyalty card data. Twelve outbreak cases were detected, eight were hospitalised and four developed haemolyti

Salmonella enterica Serotype Newport Infections in the United States, 2004-2013: Increased Incidence Investigated Through Four Surveillance Systems.

Newport is the third most common Salmonella enterica serotype identified among the estimated 1.2 million human salmonellosis infections occurring annually in the United States. Risk factors for infection and food items implicated in outbreaks vary by antimicrobial resistance pattern. We conducted a descriptive analysis of data from four enteric disease surveillance systems capturing information on incidence, demographics, seasonality, geographic distribution, outbreaks, and antimicrobial resistance of Newport infections over a 10-year period from 2004 through 2013. Incidence increased through

Interrelationships of food, nutrition, diet and health: the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges White Paper.

Nutrition and food science have each enhanced the development of an abundant, nutritious, safe food supply. A healthy diet should contain all of the required nutrients and sufficient calories to balance energy expenditure and provide for growth and maintenance throughout the life cycle. Importantly, dietary factors are associated with 5 of the 10 leading causes of death, including coronary heart disease, certain types of cancer, stroke, noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. National health care expenditures for 1990 totaled $666 billion of which 30% are related to inappro

Electrochemically controlled liquid-liquid microextraction: an innovative methodology for heavy metal extraction from tea using non-toxic menthol-based eutectic mixture.

BACKGROUND: A growing concern about toxic metal contamination in food has generated a need for efficient, sustainable, and non-toxic sample preparation techniques. Conventional extraction methodologies frequently entail the utilization of hazardous solvents or exhibit a lack of sensitivity. There is an increasing demand for analytical methodologies that are more environmentally friendly and capable of extracting trace metals from complex matrices, such as tea. This study aims to address the need for an efficient and environmentally friendly method for the extraction of metals from tea samples

Is Dietary Iodine Intake Excessive According to the Theoretical Model of Healthy Dietary Intake Pattern in Pregnant Women and Schoolchildren: Water, Salt, or Food?

Introduction: Iodine deficiency during pregnancy can cause hypothyroidism and goiter; in schoolchildren, it can cause reduced intelligence quotient. In excess, iodine can cause thyroiditis, goiter, and Hashimoto's hypothyroidism. Currently, schoolchildren and pregnant women are classified as risk groups for excessive iodine intake and iodine deficiency, respectively. Thus, determining iodine from all sources of consumption is important for intervention planning. Objective: To construct a theoretical model for the iodine intake of schoolchildren and pregnant women of a city in the Zona da Mata

Pharmacogenomics and pharmacologic class effect in drug safety management.

The safety of FDA-approved drugs remains a significant concern for patients and medical practitioners. This paper argues that pharmacogenomics can complement pharmacologic class effects in drug-safety management, and their use can be implemented without excessive costs or other impracticalities. Section I of this paper introduces key data, concepts and terms; Section II discusses the phenomenon of pharmacologic class effect as well as the relationship between this phenomenon and the use of pharmacogenomics in both FDA regulation and medical practice; and Section III proposes a means by which s

Drugs, money, and power: the Canadian drug shortage.

This article describes the shortage of generic injectable medications in Canada that affected hospitals in 2012. It traces the events leading up to the drug shortage, the causes of the shortage, and the responses by health administrators, pharmacists, and ethicists. The article argues that generic drug shortages are an ethical problem because health care organizations and governments have an obligation to avoid exposing patients to resource scarcity. The article also discusses some options governments could pursue in order to secure the drug supply and thereby fulfill their ethical obligations

Bringing greater transparency to "black box" warnings.

The number of drugs with boxed warnings and the detail in the box are much greater in the USA than Australia. US warnings are up to ten times longer and often include a great deal of detail and qualified advice. Australian warnings are usually just a few sentences long and the expected response unequivocal. Other details are relegated to the relevant section within the product information. The restriction of warnings such that they are succinct and used sparingly are explicitly highlighted in the guidelines for boxed warnings in Australia. In addition, the range of other risk management strate
