BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The role of palliative care in the support of patients with neuromuscular disorders (NMDs) is generally recognised in spite of the scarcity of condition-specific evidence in the literature.
METHODS: We have focussed specifically on palliative and end-of-life care for patients whose neuromuscular disease has an impact on their respiratory function. Reviewing the literature, we have examined where existing palliative care knowledge can be applied to the specific challenges faced by patients with NMDs, identifying where lessons learnt during the management of one condition

AIM: To explore the key advice healthcare professionals would give colleagues regarding end-of-life care delivery in hospitals, thereby informing training needs.
DESIGN: Exploratory qualitative study.
METHODS: Free-text responses from medical, nursing, and allied health professionals who completed online end-of-life care education modules (n = 597) from August 2022 to September 2023 were analysed using inductive content analysis. Results were explored and separated into two key findings: themes that were shared by all professional groups and themes that were profession specific.
RESULTS: Fi

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hearing and vision impairments are prevalent health conditions among older adults, negatively affecting functional ability, mental and social well-being, quality of life and increasing the likelihood of transition to long-term care. Sensory impairments are also common comorbidities with dementia, compounding the impact of dementia. Early intervention to optimize sensory function may help older adults stay in their homes longer. The Australian government's 'Homecare Package' provides affordable care services to support older adults with complex needs at home; however, there

Despite the development and widespread implementation of Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, the percentage of patients who survive in-hospital cardiac arrest has remained stable at approximately 15%. Although survival rates may approach 90% in coronary care units, survival rates plummet outside of these units. The lower survival rates for cardiac arrest that occur outside of the coronary care unit may relate to the time elapsed between the onset of ventricular fibrillation and first defibrillation. The advent of automated external defibrillators has made it possible to decre

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of healthcare personnel involved in end-of-life care is to ensure a good and dignified death. However, end-of-life care is delivered across various healthcare settings. This qualitative study aimed to identify the priorities and concerns related to end-of-life care shared by healthcare personnel working in hospitals, nursing homes, and municipal home care.
METHODS: Twenty-two healthcare personnel from across Norway participated in virtual focus group interviews. Participants represented 3 distinct healthcare settings and had diverse professional backgrounds.

Guidance and protocols of end-of-life care have been directed towards the care of patients with cancer. It is possible to extrapolate some of these to people with long-term neurological conditions, but there are obvious differences. Neurological conditions have widely different time courses of progression, making the timing of these discussions challenging. The common issues around end-of-life care include knowing when to start discussions, approaching advance planning, managing common symptoms, diagnosing the dying phase, withdrawing life-sustaining treatments, providing support for family an

This study explores the culturally sensitive palliative and end-of-life care within First Nations communities in the Parry Sound area: Shawanaga, Wasauksing, and Moose Deer Point First Nations communities in Canada. The legacy of colonialism, particularly the Indian Act of 1876, has significantly disrupted Indigenous health practices, contributing to mistrust in Western healthcare systems. This research addresses gaps in culturally appropriate palliative and end-of-life care by identifying how First Nations communities define a "good death" and how Western healthcare providers can respect and

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a prevalent illness that, due to its symptoms and treatment, entails a significant burden for the affected person, and his/her family, health care and private finances. Today, knowledge and understanding are sparse regarding COPD-affected persons' own lived experiences and about the symptom burden and its effect on their daily life. Due to this knowledge gap the aim of this study was to identify and describe the symptom burden and its effect on daily life in people with COPD, based on their own lived experiences.

BACKGROUND: Providing high quality around-the-clock care, is key to supporting families in their preferred place of care. Changing symptoms and parents' distress cannot wait for 'opening hours'. Yet in the UK, 24/7 children's end-of-life care remains a significant postcode lottery. To inform equitable service development this study explored parents' experiences accessing 24/7 paediatric palliative care, their expectations and needs.
METHODS: Qualitative study using in-depth interviews, analysed using thematic analysis. Parents in one region of England, were eligible if their child had a life-

OBJECTIVES: Accurately measuring cytokines in clinical material remains an important challenge in the development of biomarkers. Enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assays (ELISAs) are considered 'gold standard'; however, their use is limited by the relatively large sample volume required for multiple analyte testing. Several alternatives (including membrane or bead-ELISA) have been developed particularly to enable multiplexing. Concerns were raised regarding their use in rheumatology due to interference by heterophilic antibodies, notably rheumatoid factor (RF). In this report, we compared several

AIM: To develop and test a hypothetical model of the relationships between the health-related quality of life of patients undergoing haemodialysis and associating factors including autonomy support from healthcare professionals, basic psychological needs, motivation, resilience, self-management.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey design.
METHODS: Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire at four haemodialysis units, including one hospital and three clinics in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, Korea, from March 2 to August 5, 2022. A total of 232 adults participated in this study, with data fr

Consideration as to whether withdrawal of intensive care support might be a more appropriate line of action than to continue with full intensive care has become a part of the life and death decision making process undertaken in neonatal intensive care units. After outlining the moral objectives of delivery of health care, the arguments for taking quality of life and its various components into account during these deliberations are presented. The circumstances in which the appropriateness of continuing care should be considered are highlighted and the care options presented. The crucial import

BackgroundFamily members provide vital care at end of life, enabling patients to remain at home. Such informal care contributes significantly to the economy while supporting patients' preferences and government policy. However, the value of care-givers' contributions is often underestimated or overlooked in evaluations. Without information on the activities and expenditures involved in informal care-giving, it is impossible to provide an accurate assessment of carers' contribution to end-of-life care.AimThe aim of this study was to investigate the contributions and expenditure of informal, fam

More than 45% of polytraumatized patients in Germany suffer from severe thoracic trauma. Due to the urgent time factor (e.g. respiratory insufficiency and severe bleeding), a structured procedure in the diagnostics and treatment according to the advanced trauma life support (ATLS) criteria is necessary both prehospital and in the emergency room in order to provide the patient with adequate care. If a patient is stable or can be stabilized there is the option of using extended diagnostics, such as whole body computer tomography (CT) scanning with contrast medium, to select a treatment that is o

The international journal of tuberculosis and lung disease : the official journal of the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease2019eng
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines palliative care as the prevention and relief of the physical, psychological, social and spiritual suffering of adults and children with life-threatening illnesses and psycho-social support for their families. Palliative care and symptom relief (PCSR) also addresses suffering in nonlife-threatening situations such as after cure. PCSR should never be considered a substitute for tuberculosis (TB) prevention and treatment, but should be accessible by everyone in need. PCSR can reduce suffering and improve quality of life of patients with end-stage chroni

Quality of life (QoL) is a concept that is relevant for everyone, but individuals experience factors that make up QoL differently. This article considers the impact chronic oedema has on older people's QoL. There are additional challenges in this group, such as the ageing process, which interlink with QoL. The presence of appropriate support networks and psychological strategies can have a positive impact on the management of chronic oedema and the patient's perception of QoL.

The purpose of this scoping review is to identify self-management tasks and skills that are being taught in existing interventions for persons with multiple sclerosis and to describe intervention strategies used to facilitate the learning of self-management tasks and skills. Multiple strategies were used to search for studies published or in press between 1980 and 2008 that evaluated self-management interventions. The main exclusion criteria were case studies, inadequate description of the intervention, and traditional clinical patient education interventions. Two independent coders categorize

Since intensive care medicine enables us to maintain blood circulation and respiration artificially for some time, the usual criteria for death, such as cardiac arrest and cessation of respiration, are not applicable in all cases. Thus, the irreversible breakdown of the brain functions have come to be accepted as the most prominent factor for the occurrence of death. This criterion is linked primarily to the disintegration of the organism as a whole. Yet the controversy surrounding the moment when a man can be declared dead has not yet been resolved. The decisive weak point in this controversi
