[SPINAL CORD INJURIES DUE TO VIRAL INFECTIONS].

Spinal cord injury (SCI) etiology can be either traumatic or non-traumatic. Non-traumatic SCI is of growing importance, with studies indicating increased incidence, partly because of population aging. Approximately 9% of these injuries are secondary to an infectious cause. SCI has significant implications on the patient's quality of life. A successful rehabilitation process focuses on maximizing independence and setting achievable goals according to the patient's needs and desires. The medical staff should be familiar with the natural history of such injuries while taking into consideration th

Belief in life after death and mental health: findings from a national survey.

The present study examined the association between belief in life after death and six measures of psychiatric symptomology in a national sample of 1403 adult Americans. A statistically significant inverse relationship was found between belief in life after death and symptom severity on all six symptom clusters that were examined (i.e., anxiety, depression, obsession-compulsion, paranoia, phobia, and somatization) after controlling for demographic and other variables (e.g., stress and social support) that are known to influence mental health. No significant association was found between the fre

Pharmacotherapy considerations in advanced cardiac life support.

Cardiac arrest and sudden cardiac death remain major causes of mortality. Early intervention has been facilitated by emergency medical response systems and the development of training programs in basic life support and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). Despite the implementation of these programs, the likelihood of a meaningful outcome in many life-threatening situations remains poor. Pharmacotherapy plays a role in the management of patients with cardiac arrest, with new guidelines for ACLS available in 2005 providing recommendations for the role of specific drug therapies. Mapping death literacy in the East of England: A cross-sectional survey with qualitative insights to inform public health strategy.

BACKGROUND: Death literacy can act as a public health asset that enables individuals and communities to navigate end-of-life care with confidence and competence. It encompasses knowledge, skills, experiential learning, and social action. In the United Kingdom, low levels of death literacy may hinder equitable care and contribute to avoidable harms. AIMS: The study had three aims: (i) to assess death literacy in the East of England using the Death Literacy Index (DLI) to inform applied policy research; (ii) to explore sociodemographic and experiential factors associated with DLI scores; and (i

A Systems Perspective on Lifestyle Behaviors, Excess Weight, and Healthy Longevity in the European Union.

Background/Objectives: Healthy eating and regular physical activity support chronic disease prevention and healthy aging, while smoking, sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption, and excess weight remain important public health concerns in Europe. Nutritional status and lifestyle behaviors are also relevant to the progression and management of obesity-related metabolic and degenerative diseases, which justify a broader, systems-oriented analysis of lifestyle-health profiles. This study examines the associations between lifestyle behaviors, excess weight, and population health outcomes across Eur

A charter for improving care for people living with chronic lymphocytic leukemia: six principles for excellence.

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)is the most common leukemia in adults in Western countries, and its incidence is increasing. It is a complex, chronic disease with highly variable behavior. People living with CLL deserve an accurate diagnosis and should be empowered to play an active role in their care. They should be treated holistically as a person, not simply by their diagnosis. This charter has been developed with input from patient advocacy organizations, people living with CLL, and clinical specialists. It highlights the elements of care and support that matter most to people living wit

A Global Perspective on Transition Models for Pediatric to Adult Cystic Fibrosis Care: What Has Been Made So Far?

Interest in the transition of care for cystic fibrosis (CF) patients has grown significantly over time, driven by advancements in treatment that have extended life expectancy. As more CF patients survive into adulthood, the need for structured transition strategies has become a priority for healthcare systems worldwide. Transition programs for CF differ globally, reflecting varying resources and healthcare systems. In North America, the US CF Foundation has fostered adult care since the 1990s, with accreditation standards mandating adult programs and structured transition guidelines, exemplifi

Alveolar-arterial oxygen gradients before extracorporeal life support for severe pediatric respiratory failure: improved outcome for extracorporeal life support-managed patients?

OBJECTIVE: Recent reports have described the usefulness of the alveolar-arterial oxygen tension difference (P[A-a]O2) in predicting mortality in children with acute respiratory failure managed with mechanical ventilation. We reviewed our experience with extracorporeal life support for acute pediatric respiratory failure and specifically examined P(A-a)O2 measurements during the 24 hrs before extracorporeal life support to determine if defined cutoffs established with conventional mechanical ventilation were applicable to extracorporeal life-support survival. DESIGN: Retrospective, case-series

Exploring access to health and social supports for intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors during stressful life events (SLEs)-A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) often face increased incidents of violence during stressful life events (SLEs) such as economic recessions, environmental disasters, and pandemics. These events can diminish the effectiveness of both formal (e.g., health, social, justice, labor, community) and informal (e.g., friends, family, neighbors) support systems. Additionally, SLEs exacerbate existing health and social inequities, making it necessary to understand the accessibility of support services during these times. This scoping review investigates access to services by indiv

[Systems saving lives: a systems-based approach to cardiac arrest management].

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest remains a major public health challenge worldwide, with survival largely determined by the timeliness, quality, and organization of care. The 2025 Systems saving lives guidelines of the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) emphasize that meaningful improvements in outcomes depend not on isolated interventions but on the coordinated functioning of the entire system of care. This paper, representing the position of the Hungarian Resuscitation Society, summarizes the key elements of the guideline. The recommendations focus on the concepts of the chain of survival an
