Neurovascular free-muscle transfer to treat facial paralysis associated with hemifacial microsomia.

Despite the wide spectrum of hemifacial microsomia manifestations, treatment mainly focuses on mandible and ear abnormalities, rather than on facial paralysis. In fact, the surgical treatment of facial paralysis associated with hemifacial microsomia is quite underdeveloped, because the degree of paralysis is frequently incomplete or partial. Timing and type of surgery are also difficult to determine. Neurovascular free-muscle transfer is now a standard procedure for the dynamic smile reconstruction of longstanding facial paralysis. This type of strategy has considerable potential in the treatm

Projected Augmented Reality in Surgery: History, Validation, and Future Applications.

Background/Objectives: Projected augmented reality (PAR) enables real-time projection of digital surgical information directly onto the operative field. This offers a hands-free, headset-free platform that is universally visible to all members of the surgical team. Compared to head-mounted display systems, which are limited by restricted fields of view, ergonomic challenges, and user exclusivity, PAR provides a more intuitive and collaborative surgical interface. When paired with artificial intelligence (AI), PAR has the potential to automate aspects of surgical planning and deliver high-preci

Assessing ventilatory control in infants at high risk of sleep disordered breathing: a study of infants with cleft lip and/or palate.

Neonatal exposure to intermittent hypoxia results in altered ventilatory response to subsequent hypoxia in animal models. The effect of similar exposure in human infants is unknown. Our objective was to determine the impact of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) in early infancy on ventilatory response in infants. We recruited consecutive infants with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) to undergo ventilatory response testing using exposure to a hypoxic (15% O(2) ) gas mixture during sleep. This population is at high risk of SDB because of smaller airway caliber and abnormal palatal muscle attachments

Noninvasive evaluation of oral lesions using depth-sensitive optical spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Optical spectroscopy is a noninvasive technique with potential applications for diagnosis of oral dysplasia and early cancer. In this study, we evaluated the diagnostic performance of a depth-sensitive optical spectroscopy (DSOS) system for distinguishing dysplasia and carcinoma from non-neoplastic oral mucosa. METHODS: Patients with oral lesions and volunteers without any oral abnormalities were recruited to participate. Autofluorescence and diffuse reflectance spectra of selected oral sites were measured using the DSOS system. A total of 424 oral sites in 124 subjects were measu

Volumetric analysis of secondary alveolar bone grafting success in cleft lip and palate: A CBCT based study.

OBJECTIVE: Cleft lip and palate are the second most common congenital malformations in humans. Secondary alveolar bone grafting (SABG) with autogenous bone is the standard therapy for alveolar cleft defects. However, data regarding postoperative volumetric control of the augmented bone graft are limited. This study aims to evaluate the volumetric outcomes of SABG and to identify potential predictors for the postoperative cleft volume. METHODS: This retrospective clinical cross-sectional study included 60 patients who underwent SABG between March 2005 and February 2025 at the University Hospit

Multimodal learning-based speech enhancement and separation, recent innovations, new horizons, challenges and real-world applications.

With the increasing global prevalence of disabling hearing loss, speech enhancement technologies have become crucial for overcoming communication barriers and improving the quality of life for those affected. Multimodal learning has emerged as a powerful approach for speech enhancement and separation, integrating information from various sensory modalities such as audio signals, visual cues, and textual data. Despite substantial progress, challenges remain in synchronizing modalities, ensuring model robustness, and achieving scalability for real-time applications. This paper provides a compreh

Reconstruction and rehabilitation of short-range, high-velocity gunshot injury to the lower face: a case report.

War injuries can range from the most minor to the devastating and life-threatening. Multidisciplinary care is required for successful management of survivors. In the acute phase, care may involve emergency surgeons, anaesthetists, neurosurgeons, ophthalmic surgeons, vascular surgeons and ENT specialists in addition to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Afterwards, definitive treatment of facial hard and soft tissue gunshot injuries depends ultimately on the abilities and skills of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon and his appreciation of such injuries. The timing and sequence of the surgical

Total Hip Arthroplasty for Advanced Femoral Head Osteonecrosis in a 24-Year-Old Competitive Wrestler: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: In chronic pectoralis major (PM) tendon tears, muscle retraction and involution of the residual tendon usually preclude the use of direct repair, and augmentation methods are commonly required. Investigators have tried to find ways to maximize biomechanical fixation strength, with studies focusing mainly on methods of bony fixation and showing few differences among fixation techniques. Achilles allograft reconstruction of chronic pectoralis tendon ruptures is a viable treatment option. CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old male weightlifter presented with a 2-year-old left-sided PM tendon
