Endodermal sinus tumor, or yolk sac tumor, is the most common malignant neoplasm of germ cell origin and usually occurs in infant testes or ovaries. On rare occasions, the tumor may arise from extragonadal sites, including sacrococcygeal region, uterus, vagina, prostate, retroperitoneum, liver, mediastinum, pineal gland, and third ventricle. The orbit is an unusual location for the primary development of this neoplasm. We report the case of a girl with primary orbital endodermal sinus tumor who was managed with exenteration and chemotherapy with the result of a disease-free survival of 9 years

Meat intake has been positively associated with risk of digestive tract cancers in several epidemiological studies, while data on the relation of meat intake with cancer risk at most other sites are inconsistent. The overall data set, derived from an integrated series of case-control studies conducted in northern Italy between 1983 and 1996, included the following incident, histologically confirmed neoplasms: oral cavity, pharynx and esophagus (n = 497), stomach (n = 745), colon (n = 828), rectum (n = 498), liver (n = 428), gallbladder (n = 60), pancreas (n = 362), larynx (n = 242), breast (n

Budd-Chiari syndrome is a rare disorder characterised by hepatic venous outflow obstruction. It affects 1.4 per million people, and presentation depends upon the extent and rapidity of hepatic vein occlusion. An underlying myeloproliferative neoplasm is present in 50% of cases with other causes including infection and malignancy. Common symptoms are abdominal pain, hepatomegaly and ascites; however, up to 20% of cases are asymptomatic, indicating a chronic onset of hepatic venous obstruction and the formation of large hepatic vein collaterals. Doppler ultrasonography usually confirms diagnosis

BACKGROUND: Rectal neuroendocrine neoplasms are rare epithelial neoplasms of the rectum. The incidence of these tumors has increased over the past decades. However, many questions remain unanswered regarding their clinicopathology, including the possible mechanisms in which these tumors may grow and metastasize.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report, we report the findings of an autopsy of a 65-year-old Japanese woman diagnosed with multiple liver metastases from a single, low-grade rectal neuroendocrine tumor. The diagnosis was made in late 2018 to early 2019, and subsequently the patient u

A 13-year-old, castrated male Maine Coon cat was presented to Oklahoma State University Boren Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for yearly echocardiographic examination monitoring hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) diagnosed in 2003. Physical examination revealed a heart murmur and premature beats, likely related to HCM, but was otherwise unremarkable. A biochemistry profile revealed a hyperglobulinemia (6.3 g/dL). Cytologic examination of fine-needle aspirates from liver and spleen revealed increased numbers of plasma cells and mast cells, confirmed with subsequent histologic examination. I

BACKGROUND: Resection of the rectal primary neoplasm with synchronous liver metastases (LM) is warranted, because this is the only strategy with curative potential. Combined resection remains controversial because of the risk of morbidity and necessity of a curative abdominal approach to warrant liver resection. Laparoscopic colorectal resection may be beneficial and could facilitate this procedure.
METHODS: Between February 2006 and June 2007, 10 patients underwent 1-step laparoscopic resection for primary rectal cancer combined with open resection of synchronous LM.
RESULTS: All patients u

IMPORTANCE: As long-term survival after solid organ transplant has improved, malignant neoplasms have emerged as a major determinant of outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: To examine whether posttransplant cancer risk follows uniform trajectories over time or exhibits patterns across organ types and malignant neoplasm subtypes.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study used US nationwide data from 2000 to 2023 from the United Network for Organ Sharing registry. Participants were first-time recipients of heart, lung, liver, or kidney transplant. Analyses were conducted from Marc

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the CT and MR features of Primary hepatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PHNENs) in order to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of this disease.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients diagnosed with hepatic neuroendocrine neoplasms, excluding other sites of origin through general examination and postoperative follow-up. The CT and MR signs were analyzed according to the 2018 version of Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS), along with causes of misdiagnosis.
RESULTS: Twelve patients, including 6 males and 6 females, were enrolled in this study.

We examined a database of 379 long-term carcinogenicity studies in rats and mice to evaluate sex and species correlations in site-specific carcinogenic responses. Within a species, most target sites showed a strong correlation between males and females. For example, chemicals producing forestomach or liver tumors in males were likely to produce these same types of tumors in females. There was also a significant correlation between species for certain site-specific carcinogenic effects, most notably tumors of the forestomach, liver, and thyroid gland. In contrast, adrenal pheochromocytoma, prep

INTRODUCTION: Hepatobiliary disease is becoming a major public health problem, and recent data suggest that the burden of liver disease is higher than previously thought. Our aim was to quantify the mortality from hepatobiliary disease in Portugal and to compare this with the mortality related o other causes over a 7-year period (2006-2012).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A statistical analysis of mortality data according to cause, sex, age, and region from the National Statistics Institute in Portugal was carried out. The data related to 14 causes of death, the most frequent of which were alcoholic

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal hamartoma (MH) of the liver constitutes the third or fourth most common tumor of the liver in childhood and occurs most commonly in the first two years of life. MHs of the liver are seldom aspirated, and reports on the role of fine needle aspiration (FNA) in the diagnosis of MH are scarce. Clinically, cytologically and even histologically, MH can be mistaken for a number of reactive and neoplastic hepatic lesions that may occur in children under 2 years of age.

A 19-year-old female had ascites, an enlarged liver, pelvic masses, and an alpha-fetoprotein level of 397,000 micrograms/L with a normal beta-human chorionic gonadotropin serum level. Abdominal exploration revealed a large solitary liver mass with bilateral ovarian masses, and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and wedge liver biopsy were performed. The tumor was composed of cords, nests, and pseudorosettes of polyhedral cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm and nuclei with prominent nucleoli. The clinical, light microscopic, and immunocytochemical features indicate that the primary liver neoplasm an

Primary splenic angiosarcoma is a malignant vascular neoplasm with a short-term fatal prognosis in most cases, with nonspecific symptoms and usually in advanced stages. We present the case of a 49-year-old man with clinical history of chronic diarrhea and weight loss, in which it was identifies splenomegaly. The histopathological study disclose the diagnosis of primary angiosarcoma of the spleen, with spread to the liver, lung, and lymph nodes. The patient was discharged after undergoing splenectomy, with palliative treatment. Because the rarity of this neoplasm, there is limited experience re

Surgical resection for primary and secondary hepatic neoplasms provides the best chance of cure. Advanced surgical techniques such as portal vein embolisation, two-staged hepatectomy and associated liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged-hepatectomy (ALPPS) have facilitated hepatic resection in patients with previously unresectable, bi-lobar disease. These techniques are frequently employed to ensure favourable clinical outcomes and avoid potentially fatal post-operative complications such as small for size syndrome and post-hepatectomy liver failure. However, they rely on the inna

BACKGROUND: Beside hepatocellular carcinoma, metastasis, and cholangiocarcinoma, the imaging findings of other relatively uncommon hepatic lesions are less discussed in the literature. Imaging diagnosis of these lesions is a daily challenge. In this article, we review the imaging characteristics of these neoplasms.
METHODS: From January 2003 to December 2014, 4746 patients underwent liver biopsy or hepatic surgical resection in our hospital. We reviewed the pathological database retrospectively. Imaging of these lesions was reviewed.
RESULTS: Imaging findings of uncommon hepatic lesions vary

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver is a rare benign lesion that can mimic a malignant liver neoplasm. A case of inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver found in association with a malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the small bowel was reported. The inflammatory pseudotumor was misdiagnosed as a metastasis from the GIST by frozen section. A correct diagnosis was made only after histopathological examination of the paraffin section of the resected specimen. This case is particularly interesting because of the association of the two rare pathological entities and the diagnostic d

The predisposition of preexisting cirrhotic metabolic liver disease to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma is well established. However, the association between glycogenoses (a form of noncirrhotic metabolic liver disease) and the formation of benign and malignant liver tumors is less well known. The sixth case of simultaneous occurrence of glycogenosis type Ia and hepatocellular carcinoma, which occurred in a 34-year-old man referred for advice on therapy for his malignant neoplasm, is reported. Cases previously described in the literature are reviewed and management of this entity in

CONTEXT: Impairment of venous outflow manifests as zone 3 sinusoidal dilatation and congestion (SDC) in liver biopsy. However, the finding of SDC is not specific for venous outflow impairment.Objectives.-To determine the specificity of SDC in liver biopsies for venous outflow impairment and to seek an explanation for SDC in patients without clinical or radiologic features of venous outflow impairment.
DESIGN: Liver biopsies from 51 patients with sinusoidal dilatation were reviewed. Biopsies from transplant recipients, patients with cirrhosis, and patients with hepatic neoplasms (primary or me

The known aneuploidogens, benomyl and its metabolite, carbendazim (methyl 2-benzimidazole carbamate (MBC)), were selected for the third in a series of ongoing projects with selected pesticides. Mutagenicity and carcinogenicity data submitted to the US Environmental Protection Agency's (US EPA's) Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) as part of the registration process are examined along with data from the open literature. Mutagenicity and carcinogenicity profiles are developed to provide a complete overview and to determine whether an association can be made between benomyl- and MBC-induced mouse
