The genotoxicity of methyl mercury chloride (MMC, 0-25 x 10(-6) M) and dimethyl mercury (DMM, 0-434 x 10(-6) M) was evaluated by chromosome metaphase analysis in human lymphocytes treated in vitro for 24 h. Fludarabine was used to treat 68 patients with previously treated chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Nine (13%) patients achieved a complete remission and 30 (44%) a partial remission. The role of mitochondrial biogenesis and function during mitogenic stimulation of rat thymocytes was investigated. The results show that mitochondrial biogenesis is required to provide the ATP for the energy-requiring processes occurring during blastogenesis. Impairment of mitochondrial biogenesis by inhibition of mitochondrial protein synthesis inhibits blast transformation. Since the tetracyclines impair mitochondrial protein synthesis, the results offer an explanation for the well-known immunosuppressive effects of these antibiotics.

A tuberculin carbohydrate fraction, GAE, in sensitized animals induced a delayed type of skin reactivity and inhibited the migration of macrophages but failed to stimulate lymphocyte transformation in vitro. Tuberculin protein-containing fractions were active in each test. These results show that in vitro lymphocyte transformation is not necessarily a corollary of delayed type hypersensitivity.
