Effects of inter- and intra-aggregate magnetic dipolar interactions on the magnetic heating efficiency of iron oxide nanoparticles.

Iron oxide nanoparticles have found an increasing number of biomedical applications as sensing or trapping platforms and therapeutic and/or diagnostic agents. Most of these applications are based on their magnetic properties, which may vary depending on the nanoparticle aggregation state and/or concentration. In this work, we assess the effect of the inter- and intra-aggregate magnetic dipolar interactions on the heat dissipation power and AC hysteresis loops upon increasing the nanoparticle concentration and the hydrodynamic aggregate size. We observe different effects produced by inter- (lon

The accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance arthrogram versus arthroscopy in the diagnosis of subscapularis tendon injury.

PURPOSE: The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting subscapularis tears identified during the gold standard of arthroscopy and determine whether MRI can reliably predict which patients have subscapularis tears. A second purpose was to determine whether magnetic resonance (MR) arthrograms could better identify a subscapularis tear than conventional MRI. METHODS: This was a retrospective study evaluating 39 consecutive patients (40 shoulders) who had a preoperative 1.5-T MRI study and underwent an arthroscopic subsca

Magnetic field distribution in the presence of paramagnetic plates in magnetic resonance imaging: a combined numerical and experimental study.

The amount and geometric distribution of paramagnetic components in tissue is considered as the basis of T2*-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Such techniques are routinely applied for assessment of iron in parenchymal organs such as the liver (hemosiderosis). Furthermore, susceptibility sensitive MRI is discussed as an alternative method to x-ray techniques for quantitative assessment of paramagnetic spongy bone components in patients with osteoporosis. The presented work is dedicated to systematically examining the possible influences of macroscopic arrangements of paramagnetic plat

[Diagnostic value of combined conventional magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography in sinus venous thrombosis].

25 patients are presented, who were diagnosed with cerebral sinus venous thrombosis by a combination of Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) and conventional Spin-Echo sequences. An angiography in DSA technique was carried out additionally in 12 cases. In 24 patients MR-angiographic control examinations were conducted. In seven cases MRA revealed an isolated thrombosis of the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) whereas in eleven patients there was an additional occlusion of other sinuses or cerebral veins. The transverse sinus (ST) was the second most affected. DSA essentially confirmed the MR-imagi

High-resolution T2-reversed magnetic resonance imaging on a high magnetic field system. Technical note.

Because of the high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, T2-weighted images obtained using high-field magnetic resonance (MR) imaging systems can be expected to provide high anatomical and contrast resolution. Furthermore, the improved structural and contrast resolution of these high S/N T2-weighted images can be processed for optimum perceptual resolution through the application of gray-scale reversal and expansion of the gray-scale window, known as T2-reversed (T2R) imaging. In this study, the authors investigated high-resolution T2R MR imaging performed on a high-field (3-tesla) system for its clin

Panencephalitic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Unusual presentation of magnetic resonance imaging and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

We present serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans on a biopsy-verified case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). The initial MRI scan demonstrated increased T2 signal-intensity within the basal ganglia and thalami. Subsequent MRI scans demonstrated a thin cortex, increased T2 signals diffusely within the white matter including U-fibers, and hypointense T2 signals within the basal ganglia, and thalami. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) study showed an absence of creatine, choline and N-acetylaspartate signals. By these characteristic findings, serial MRI and MRS studies may

[Angiography with magnetic resonance of the ++carotid arteries. Evaluation of clinical results obtained with low magnetic field equipment].

Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) is the latest diagnostic technique for the noninvasive evaluation of cardiovascular conditions. This technique has proved to be especially useful in the study of carotid arteries. All the clinical studies reported to date have been obtained at high or medium field strength; our purpose is to assess the clinical value of MRA in the evaluation of carotid arteries at low field strength. All the exams were performed with an 0.2 T permanent magnet, using the 2D time of flight (TOF) technique, the only one which is currently available on our equipment. Forty-two

Unconventional magnetism and residual entropy in La7Os3O18.

In this communication we describe the crystal structure and unusual magnetic properties of La7Os3O18, a new layered osmate with structurally discrete (non-corner-sharing) octahedra containing Os5+ with and strong spin-orbit coupling. Investigations through powder X-ray diffraction, magnetometry and heat capacity measurements demonstrate that the material undergoes an antiferromagnetic ordering transition at TN = 43 ± 1 K, with a further broad overturn in susceptibility at T ≈ 14 K indicating low dimensional short range magnetic ordering. Curie-Weiss fits give an effective moment of µeff = 3.26

Magnetic graphs for cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Strengthening light-matter coupling has become a central challenge in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), enabling ultrafast gate operations, qubit protection, and deterministic nonlinear optics. As the coupling increases, even the simplest configuration-an atom interacting with a quantized field-requires careful treatment, as exemplified by ongoing debates on quantum Rabi models (QRMs). Here we propose a magnetic graph model for single-atom cavity QED that offers a unified description of quantum dynamics from the weak- to the ultrastrong-coupling regime via graph connectivity. We demonstrat

Molecular Aromaticity from a Magnetic Perspective.

The aromaticity concept was initially introduced to describe compounds that resemble benzene. Aromaticity was later extended to describe general ring-shaped molecules with delocalized conjugated bonds having enhanced thermodynamic stability, small bond length alternation, particular reactivity, and distinct magnetic properties. In this Perspective, we focus on various aspects of the magnetic criterion of aromaticity. Molecular aromaticity is assessed by using calculations of the magnetically induced current density (MICD) susceptibility. The degree of aromaticity is determined by calculating t

Magnetization switching by asymmetric topological surfaces.

The development of spin-orbit-torque (SOT) devices has sparked considerable research interest, particularly in the quest for novel materials that exhibit high spin-to-charge conversion efficiencies for effective magnetic switching. However, optimizing structure and improving efficiency necessitate theoretical insights and material innovations. In this study, we employ first-principles calculations to investigate the persistent spin current in magnetic topological material MnSb2Te4. The weakly asymmetric topological surface states ensure that the spin currents in this system do not cancel out w
