RATIONALE: Orthognathic surgery cases are inherently challenging to treat with lingual appliances due to the complexities of orthodontic management and difficulties in achieving intermaxillary fixation during surgery. This challenge is further amplified in cases involving asymmetric space closure, such as those with a missing molar on one side and a premolar on the other, a scenario not yet documented in the literature. This case report presents the orthodontic-orthognathic management of an adult patient requiring space closure of asymmetric missing lower teeth.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 30-year-ol

PURPOSE: To investigate the therapeutic effect of modified fixed Twin-block on patients whose mandible was retruded and anterior overjet was normal.
METHODS: Thirty-six adolescents with mandibular retrusion and normal anterior overjet were selected. The goal of occlusal reconstruction was to move the soft tissue pogonion forward to the zero meridian(0°). Fixed Twin-block combined with the mini-implants on the mandibular buccal shelf was used to promote mandibular growth. After 12 months, the appliances were removed step by step to observe the stability of the jaw relationship. Fixed orthodont

PURPOSE: To evaluate the retention ability of fixed Twin-block appliance and its clinical effect on adolescent skeletal ClassⅡmalocclusion.
METHODS: Twenty-six skeletal ClassⅡdivision 1 adolescents (M:12, F: 14; age:11~13 years, average: 11.8 years) were chosen and fixed Twin-block appliance was used to guide the mandibular protrusion for one year. Before and after treatment, cephalometric films were taken to observe the skeletal, dental and soft tissue changes. Graphpad Prism 6.0 software was used for Student's t test.
RESULTS: There was no loosening or destruction of the appliance during t

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the treatment efficacy and follow-up stability of the asymmetric Forsus appliance by evaluating longitudinal changes in dental arch asymmetry on digital dental models from 21 patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Maxillary and mandibular reference lines were used for measurements of intra-arch asymmetry at pretreatment (T1), posttreatment (T2), and 4.2 years after treatment (T3). Maxillary and mandibular measurements were performed relative to the dental midline and anterior reference line on digital dental models. To determine the amount of asymmetry between the Class I

OBJECTIVES: To detect changes in mandibular growth between a historical group (HG) from the American Association of Orthodontics Foundation Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collection (AAOF Legacy) and a contemporary group (CG) of normodivergent or hypodivergent Class II untreated subjects.
SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: The sample included radiographs from the AAOF Legacy and from the University of Naples 'Federico II' collected during a previous RCT.
MATERIALS & METHODS: The HG was composed of 26 individuals (around 1960) from the AAOF Legacy (15 from the Burlington Growth Study, nine from the O

The malocclusion had a dental asymmetry that was corrected with the extraction of the maxillary right and left premolars and the mandibular left first premolar. Treatment objectives included: alleviation of maxillary and mandibular arch length deficiencies, maintenance of the maxillary midline conincident with the facial midline, correction of the mandibular midline which was off to the right, overbite and overjet correction, and attainment of a Class I canine relationship on the right side. [This case was presented to the American Board of Orthodontics in partial fulfillment of the requiremen

INTRODUCTION: Our objective was to evaluate the nasal passage (NP) and oropharyngeal (OP) volumes of patients with different dentofacial skeletal patterns.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 140 patients (70 boys, 70 girls), divided into 3 groups as Class I (1 ≤ ANB ≤ 3), Class II (ANB > 3), and Class III (ANB < 1), and then further divided into 4 groups as SNA angle ≥ 80°, SNA angle <80°, SNB angle ≥78°, and SNB angle < 78° to evaluate how the positional changes in the maxilla and the mandible affect the OP and NP variables. Differences between groups were determined by using the Kruskal

Overbite and overjet were studied as continuous variables to examine for any relationship to diagnostic groups of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) compared with symptom-free controls. This avoided the bias of arbitrary definitions of normal and abnormal for these occlusal variables and also avoided the masking effect of studying symptoms rather than diagnostic entities. Incisal overbite in primary osteoarthrosis (OA) was shifted toward the minimal and open bite ranges as compared with the controls (p less than 0.02). Open bite occurred in only the two OA classes studied and in a few cases wit

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review on the morphological characteristics of the skull base (flexion, anterior length and posterior length) and the concomitant development of malocclusions, by comparing differences in dimorphism, ethnicity and age.
METHODS: The articles were selected by means of electronic search on BBO, MEDLINE and LILACS databases from 1966 to 2016. A qualitative evaluation of the methodologies used on the articles was also performed.
RESULTS: Although the literature on this topic is abundant, only 16 articles were selected for the present sy

A group of 25 untreated subjects with Class II malocclusion in the deciduous dentition (featuring the concomitant presence of distal step, Class II deciduous canine relationship, and excessive overjet) was compared with a control group of 22 untreated subjects with ideal occlusion (flush terminal plane, Class I deciduous canine relationship, minimal overbite, and overjet) at the same dentitional stage. The subjects were monitored during a 2 1/2-year period in the transition from the deciduous to the mixed dentition, during which time no orthodontic treatment was provided. Occlusal analysis of

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in lip-closing force, tongue pressure, and buccinator pressure before and after orthognathic surgery, and to compare these changes between skeletal Class II and Class III female patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six female patients who underwent orthognathic surgery at Kyushu Dental University Hospital were enrolled. Patients were divided into two groups (Group A: skeletal Class II; Group B: skeletal Class III), and ten females with normal occlusion served as the control group. Lip-closing force, tongue pressure, and buccinat

Treatment of skeletal Class II patients with dual bite and idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) is challenging for orthodontists because of the unstable position of the mandible as well as skeletal relapse attributed to improper seating of the mandibular condyles. This case report describes the successful treatment of an 18-year-old Mongolian man diagnosed with centric relation-maximum intercuspation discrepancy and ICR. After making a definitive diagnosis from verified centric relation using bilateral manipulation, orthodontic treatment was initiated followed by three-dimensional computer-aid

BACKGROUND: To detect the optimal timing of intervention based on different cervical vertebral maturation stage (CS1-2 vs. CS3-4) for the treatment of Class III malocclusion with early Class III protocol.
METHODS: A total sample of 43 patients (23 females, 20 males) ranging between 7 and 13 years of age with dentoskeletal Class III malocclusion treated with the modified SEC III (Splints, Elastic and Chincup) protocol divided into two groups based on the cervical vertebral maturation stages (CS1-2 and CS3-4) was included in this retrospective observational longitudinal study. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition in which damaged muscle tissue breaks down and intracellular contents, including myoglobin, are released into the circulation. This produces a nonspecific clinical syndrome including electrolyte disturbances, hypovolemia, metabolic acidosis, coagulopathies, and risk of acute kidney injury. Rhabdomyolysis has been reported as a complication of prolonged surgical procedures but has rarely been reported in the oral and maxillofacial surgery literature. Early diagnosis and treatment of rhabdomyolysis are important to avoid long-term complications such as renal failure
