Heme synthesis by copper-deficient cells was investigated to elucidate the nature of the defect in intracellular iron metabolism. Iron uptake from transferrin by copper-deficient reticulocytes was 52% of normal, and the rate of heme synthesis was 33% of normal. Plasma lipid peroxides were measured as malonyldialdehyde (MDA) by the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method in 75 children suffering from Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Their riboflavin status was assessed by measuring erythrocyte glutathione reductase activation coefficients (EGRACs), and values greater than 1.40 were regarded as indicating biochemical deficiency. Aminomalononitrile (HCN trimer) reacts with electrophiles such as aldehydes and acrylonitrile under very mild conditions of temperature and pH to produce intermediates which, after acid hydrolysis, yield amino acids. The following amino acids have been identified and quantitated: glycine, D, L-erythro- and D, L-threo-beta - hydroxyaspartic acids, D, L glutamic acid, and D, L-threonine and allo-threonine. The mechanism of their formation and the possible significance of these reactions in prebiotic syntheses are discussed.

Different grades of Jinhua hams have distinct tastes. However, the key differential taste substances and its metabolic pathways among the four grades of Jinhua ham have not been studied. AIM: To study the role of oxidative stress in mechanism of psychosomatic disorders involvement in pathogenesis of ulcerogenesis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Psychosomatic disorders (PSD) and oxidative stress (OS) were assessed in 120 students with duodenal ulcer (DU) who had no concomitant pathology. Examination for PSD included interviewing by questionnaires. OS was judged by the level of lipid peroxidation products (malonic dialdehyde and dienic conjugates) and antioxidant activity--by glutathion peroxidase and superoxidedismutase. We studied the effect of restraint stress upon the degree of lipidic peroxidation in the fronto-temporal cerebral cortex, diencephalon, thymus and gastric mucosa.
