Mandibular condyle fractures: evaluation of the Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group classification.

Condylar fractures (CFs) are about 30% of mandibular fractures. Condylar fractures are treated with several protocols, and unsatisfying outcome is achieved in some cases. A staging system for classifying CFs is of paramount importance to plan therapy, to define prognosis, and to exchange information among trauma centers. The Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group proposed a classification system for CFs, but no report focusing to its effectiveness is still available. Thus, we performed a retrospective study on a series of patients affected by CFs.The Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group …

Simultaneous bilateral facial palsy as a result of isolated mandibular fractures.

Post-traumatic bilateral facial nerve palsy is usually associated with fracture of the temporal bones in patients who have sustained a significant head injury. Facial nerve injury can also very rarely occur because of isolated mandibular fractures, without associated temporal bone fractures. Here is reported a case of bilateral facial nerve palsy in a patient with mandibular symphysis and bilateral condylar fractures of the mandible without evidence of temporal bone fracture or significant head injury.

Condylar motion after open and closed treatment of mandibular condylar fractures.

PURPOSE: A comparative study was performed to evaluate the function of the temporomandibular system after open and closed treatment of condylar fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 37 temporomandibular joints were examined that had undergone either open treatment (n = 24) or closed treatment with maxillomandibular fixation (n = 13) for condylar fracture. The joints were investigated clinically and on the basis of radiographs. In addition, the movements of the condyles of the temporomandibular system were recorded in 3 dimensions with a computed electronic jaw tracking system (stereogn

Repair of mandibular fractures using the 2.0 mm system. A review.

The mandible is a commonly injured facial bone with mandibular fractures occurring 3 times more frequently than those in the zygoma. Requirements for repair vary with the type of fracture, the location of the fracture, and the condition of the teeth and bone. Repair of the mandible is complicated by the complex range of function of the mandible. This article presents a brief, historical overview of techniques and systems that have been used for fracture stabilization. The authors report on the results of a study in which the 2.0 mm plate was used to repair 89 fractures. The use of 2.0 mm mandi…

[The comparative efficacy of different physiotherapy combinations in treating mandibular fractures].

The authors compare the efficacy of IR laser, a combination of magnetic laser radiation and UHF electric field followed dy calcium chloride electrophoresis on the course of mandibular fracture healing. With this purpose 114 patients with uni- and bilateral mandibular fractures were examined and administered a course of preventive treatment. Analysis of the clinical data, subjective sensations of the injured subjects, and data of functional diagnostic methods (rheography, polarography, echo-osteometry) brought the authors to a conclusion on a positive effect ot IR laser and, more so, of magneti…

[Long-term evaluation of the functional treatment of mandibular condyle fractures].

Clinical and radiologic examinations were carried out after a mean 7 year follow up of functional conservative treatment of a mandibular condyle fracture in 16 patients. Anatomic and functional recovery was excellent in children and was often very good in adolescents. Signs of dysfunction were a frequent finding in adults, but these were not considered as important by the patients and their specific treatment was not required.

Intraoral open reduction with rigid internal fixation of mandibular subcondylar fractures.

Open reduction of subcondylar fractures achieves precise anatomic alignment of bony fragments and may prevent the postoperative sequelae seen with some closed reductions. Using an extraoral approach, a fracture can be easily seen and manipulated. An intraoral approach avoids large facial scars, facial nerve injury, and allows visualization of the occlusion during the procedure. Cases for this technique should be carefully selected.

Surgical and conservative treatment of mandibular fractures. A follow-up study.

During 1970-1973 a total of 57 patients with mandibular fractures were treated at the Ear Department of the University of Turku Central Hospital in conjunction with the Department of Oral Surgery. The average age of patients was 31 years. Below-the-jaw strapping was used as the only means of immobilization in nine cases. Eight of these nine cases involved only a fracture of the condylar process and one was also a corpus mandibulae fracture. Metal wire osteosynthesis was used with 44 patients and osteosynthesis plates were used with two patients. A Guinning slint was prepared in 10 cases and im…

In vitro mechanical test of grid plates for mandibular angle fractures.

This study evaluated, by mechanical testing, the strength of four-hole grid plates used for mandibular angle fracture fixation. Much has been discussed about the treatment of mandibular fractures with straight or curved plates. However, there are few studies about the use of grid plates. The geometry of such plates provides three-dimensional stability, resistance against torque associated with a low profile. Ninety polyurethane hemimandibles were used as substratum. The hemimandibles were divided into nine groups and fixation of the fractures was performed varying the type and position of plat…

Preauricular transmasseteric anteroparotid approach for extracorporeal fixation of mandibular condyle fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Free grafting or extracorporeal fixation of traumatically displaced mandibular condyles is sometimes required in patients with severe anteromedial displacement of condylar head. Majority of the published studies report the use of a submandibular, retromandibular or preauricular incisions for the access which have demerits of limited visibility, access and potential to cause damage to facial nerve and other parotid gland related complications. PURPOSE: This retrospective clinical case record study was done to evaluate the preauricular transmasseteric anteroparotid (P-TMAP) approa
