Management of osteoarthritic knee pain.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common forms of arthritis seen in primary care practice. The pain associated with this condition is the chief complaint of most patients, prompting them to seek medical attention. Pain can originate from the synovial membrane, joint capsule, periarticular muscles and ligaments, and periosteum and subchondral bone, among other sources. Osteoarthritis is traditionally thought of as a noninflammatory type of arthritis; however, inflammatory mechanisms can be present. Therefore, the management of osteoarthritic pain involves nonpharmacologic modes of therapy

Severe Alcohol Use Disorder in a Patient Who Is Deaf, Mute, and Having Limited Literacy: A Case Report and Review of Disability-Linked Substance Use Vulnerabilities.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) in individuals with communication and literacy disabilities is poorly recognized and rarely described in the literature. Standard diagnostic and withdrawal management tools are not adapted for deaf, mute, and illiterate patients, creating gaps in equitable care. A 64-year-old man who was congenitally deaf, mute, and with limited literacy presented for protective-custody alcohol detoxification after decades of consuming 12-30 beers daily. Bereavement and loss of his primary caregiver triggered an escalation of use. The Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alco

Tolerance of Rib Raising Among Hospitalized Patients: A Pilot Study.

CONTEXT: Rib raising is an osteopathic manipulative treatment modality that can help patients with various respiratory conditions to improve their work of breathing. However, the tolerance of this technique in hospitalized patients has not been assessed in a systematic manner. We hypothesized that rib raising would be a well-tolerated treatment modality for hospitalized patients admitted for asthma, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and/or congestive heart failure. OBJECTIVE: To determine hospitalized patients' tolerance of rib raising through a prospective pilot study. METHO

[Chronic pelvic pain syndrome : Treatment options using osteopathy].

Urogenital problems are dramatically increasing; especially chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) poses a major challenge for physicians and therapists. Few forms of therapy have been able to promise relief because the cause of CPPS remains unclear. Functional complaints are increasingly discussed as triggers. Osteopathic treatment has been reported to help many patients in recent years. In this article, the approach and osteopathic point of view of functional complaints are presented. In addition, possible causes for the development of CPPS and important anatomical structures that are directly

Efficacy of Myofascial Unwinding and Myofascial Release Technique in a Patient with Somatic Symptoms - A Case Report.

Depression is an aversion to activity disorder which could lead to somatic dysfunctions such as insomnia, excessive sleeping, body aches, listlessness, and irritable bowel syndrome. The World Health Organization has projected the depression to be the second leading cause of disability worldwide by 2020. The physical and mental ill effects of somatic depression can be addressed using the osteopathic manipulative treatment. Therefore, the purpose of the present case report is to explore the effect of myofascial release (MFR) technique and myofascial unwinding (MFU) in the somatic depression. We

Efficacy Comparison of Osteopathic Muscle Energy Techniques and Cervical Mobilization on Pain, Disability, and Proprioception in Cervical Spondylosis Patients.

BACKGROUND Cervical spondylosis (CS) is a degenerative disease of the cervical spine characterized by persistent neck pain. Cervical facet joint mobilization (CM) and the osteopathic muscle energy technique (MET) are effective manual procedures for the treatment of neck pain. In this study, we compared the efficacy of the MET and CM techniques on pain, disability, and proprioception in 76 patients with CS. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 96 participants with a diagnosis of CS were randomized into an electro-thermal therapy (ET) group (control group, n=32), ET+MET group (experiment I, n=32), an

[Dupuytren's contracture: percutaneous needle aponeurotomy is an alternative to surgery].

Dupuytren's contracture is a retractile fibrosis of the superficial palmar aponeurosis of the hand, resulting in a progressive and fixed flexion of the fingers that may result in severe limitation of hand function. It affects several millions of people in Europe and North America. Risk factors are genetic and sometimes related to mellitus diabetes. There is no spontaneous remission. Until recently, surgery was the only treatment, but now needle aponeurotomy emerges as a therapeutic alternative. It should be performed as first line treatment by a trained practitioner. Short and long-term result

[Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome. Influence of osteopathic treatment - a randomized controlled study].

BACKGROUND: Prostatitis is the most common urological disease in males under [corrected] the age of 50 years old. As bacteria are detected in only <5% of cases the disease can mostly be classified as chronic nonbacterial prostatitis. The symptoms of this problem complex, often described as chronic prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP-CPPS), seem to be multifactorial so that an improvement can only rarely be achieved with conventional forms of therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aim of this study was to investigate whether osteopathic treatment can influence the symptoms of CP-CPPS

Gut-Brain Axis in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Pathogenesis and Therapeutics.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract driven by complex interactions between genetic susceptibility, environmental triggers, microbial dysbiosis, and immune dysregulation. The gut microbiome, composed primarily of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, plays a crucial role in maintaining intestinal barrier integrity, immune balance, and neuroimmune signaling. Disruption of this microbial ecosystem is characterized by loss of beneficial short chain fatty acid producing bacteria and expansion

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: Indications and efficacy of nonoperative treatment.

The strategy for the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis depends essentially upon the magnitude and pattern of the deformity, and its potential for progression. Treatment options include observation, bracing and/or surgery. During the past decade, several studies have demonstrated that the natural history of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis can be positively affected by nonoperative treatment, especially bracing. Other forms of conservative treatment, such as chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation, acupuncture, exercise or other manual treatments, or diet and nutrition, have not yet been proven

Mechanical Low Back Pain.

Low back pain is usually nonspecific or mechanical. Mechanical low back pain arises intrinsically from the spine, intervertebral disks, or surrounding soft tissues. Clinical clues, or red flags, may help identify cases of nonmechanical low back pain and prompt further evaluation or imaging. Red flags include progressive motor or sensory loss, new urinary retention or overflow incontinence, history of cancer, recent invasive spinal procedure, and significant trauma relative to age. Imaging on initial presentation should be reserved for when there is suspicion for cauda equina syndrome, malignan

Fluoroquinolone toxicity symptoms in a patient presenting with low back pain.

Fluoroquinolone medications have been shown to contribute to tendinopathies, cardiotoxicity, and neurotoxicity. Low back pain is a common musculoskeletal condition for which chiropractic treatment is most often sought. This case report details a patient presenting with low back pain and a history of fluoroquinolone toxicity. The patient was initially treated with chiropractic manipulation, which increased her symptoms. She was then referred to an osteopathic physician who treated the patient with intravenous antioxidants and amino acids, an elimination diet, and probiotic supplementation. With

Infantile Colic: Recognition and Treatment.

Infantile colic is a benign process in which an infant has paroxysms of inconsolable crying for more than three hours per day, more than three days per week, for longer than three weeks. It affects approximately 10% to 40% of infants worldwide and peaks at around six weeks of age, with symptoms resolving by three to six months of age. The incidence is equal between sexes, and there is no correlation with type of feeding (breast vs. bottle), gestational age, or socioeconomic status. The cause of infantile colic is not known; proposed causes include alterations in fecal microflora, intolerance t
