Maternal exposure to ozone and PM2.5 and the prevalence of orofacial clefts in four U.S. states.

BACKGROUND: While there is some evidence that maternal exposure to ambient air pollution is associated with orofacial clefts in offspring, the epidemiologic studies have been largely equivocal. We evaluated whether maternal exposure to elevated county-level ambient fine particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5µm (PM2.5) and ozone during early gestation was associated with a higher prevalence of orofacial clefts. METHODS: Birth data consisting of 4.7 million births from 2001 to 2007 were obtained from National Birth Defects Prevention Network for four states - Arizona, Florida, New Yo…

Exposure to a maternal cafeteria diet changes open-field behaviour in the developing offspring.

The early postnatal period is a sensitive period in rodents as behavioural systems are developing and maturing during this time. However, little is currently known about the behavioural effects of feeding a hyper-energetic cafeteria diet (CD) during the lactational period when offspring behaviour is tested during early adolescence. To this end, 23days old offspring from dams (Wistar) fed on CD during lactation were tested in either the open-field or the elevated plus-maze for exploration and anxiety-related behaviour. On postnatal day 9, maternal behaviour and non-maternal behaviour of the dam

Metabolic complications of in utero maternal HIV and antiretroviral exposure in HIV-exposed infants.

BACKGROUND: Despite a wide body of literature supporting the use of antenatal antiretrovirals (ARV) for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission, there remains a need for continued monitoring as the intrauterine interval is a critical period during which fetal programming influences the future health and development of the child. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the current literature addressing potential metabolic complications of in utero HIV and ARV exposure. We describe studies evaluating metabolic outcomes such as intrauterine and early postnatal growth, bone health and

Effects of maternal exposure to social stress during pregnancy: consequences for mother and offspring.

A suboptimal in utero environment, for example, as a result of maternal stress, can have detrimental effects on the pregnancy and long-term adverse 'programming' effects on the offspring. This article focuses on the effects of prenatal social stress on the mother, her pregnancy and the offspring, since these issues have ethological relevance in both animals and humans. The consequences of social stress exposure depend on when during pregnancy the stress occurs, and many of the effects on the offspring are sex specific. Social stress during early pregnancy tends to result in pregnancy loss, whe

Maternal exposure to moderate ambient carbon monoxide is associated with decreased risk of preeclampsia.

OBJECTIVE: Carbon monoxide (CO) in cigarette smoke may be the mechanism by which tobacco use during pregnancy decreases the risk of the development of preeclampsia. We attempted to test this hypothesis by examining the effect of maternal exposure to ambient CO on preeclampsia. STUDY DESIGN: Births that occurred between 2004 and 2009 in the Canadian province of Ontario were extracted from the data. Study subjects were divided into 4 groups according to quartiles of CO concentration that were based on maternal residence. Adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence interval were used to estimate the …

The outcome of acute schistosomiasis infection in adult mice with postnatal exposure to maternal malnutrition.

Maternal malnutrition during the lactation period in early development may have long-term programming effects on adult offspring. We evaluated the combined effects of parasitological behaviour and histopathological features and malnutrition during lactation. Lactating mice and their pups were divided into a control group (fed a normal diet of 23% protein), a protein-restricted group (PR) (fed a diet containing 8% protein) and a caloric-restricted group (CR) (fed according to the PR group intake). At the age of 60 days, the offspring were infected with Schistosoma mansoni cercariae and killed a

Maternal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls and the secondary sex ratio: an occupational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Though commercial production of polychlorinated biphenyls was banned in the United States in 1977, exposure continues due to their environmental persistence. Several studies have examined the association between environmental polychlorinated biphenyl exposure and modulations of the secondary sex ratio, with conflicting results. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to evaluate the association between maternal preconceptional occupational polychlorinated biphenyl exposure and the secondary sex ratio. METHODS: We examined primipara singleton births of 2595 women, who worked in three capacit

Prenatal exposure to maternal infections and epilepsy in childhood: a population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: We estimated the association between prenatal exposure to maternal infections and the subsequent risk for epilepsy in childhood. METHODS: We included 90,619 singletons who were born between September 1997 and June 2003 in the Danish National Birth Cohort and followed them up to December 2005. Information on maternal infections during pregnancy (cystitis, pyelonephritis, diarrhea, coughs lasting >1 week, vaginal yeast infection, genital herpes, venereal warts, and herpes labialis) was prospectively reported by mothers in 2 computer-assisted telephone interviews in early and midgesta

Maternal occupational exposure to chemical substances and the risk of infants small-for-gestational-age.

BACKGROUND: The association between maternal occupational exposure to specific chemical substances (organic solvents, carbon tetrachloride, … y physical work had no substantial effect on the results. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that maternal exposure to specific chemicals at work may be a risk factor for the birth of SGA infants.

Effects of maternal exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) on cell proliferation in the mouse preimplantation embryo.

Pregnant mice were treated with trichloroethylene (TCE) at doses ranging from 0.01 micrograms/kg body weight to 483 mg/kg body weight when embryos were traversing the pronuclear stages of development. No treatment-related effect was seen on total number of embryos recovered from oviducts at the 2 to 4 cell stage of development. The 4-cell embryos were tested for cellular proliferative disadvantage by the embryo chimera assay in which embryos from treated mothers (experimental embryos) are paired with embryos from nontreated mothers (control embryos) to form aggregation chimeras. No significant

Acute response of the fetal telencephalon to short-term maternal exposure to ethanol in the rat.

Pregnant rats were exposed to either ethanol (total dose 18 g/kg) on gestational days 14 and 15 or whole-body ionizing radiation (0.5 Gy) on gestational day 15. On gestational day 16, 24 h following the last dose of ethanol or exposure to ionizing radiation, the developing cerebral cortex of the fetus was examined histologically. Ionizing radiation caused extensive cell death within the fetal cerebral cortex whereas ethanol caused more subtle morphological changes such as cortical thinning and petechial intraventricular hemorrhages. These findings suggest that ethanol, unlike ionizing radiatio

Embryotoxicity and in vivo cytogenetic changes following maternal exposure to cadmium chloride in mice.

Cadmium is a well-known teratogen in laboratory animals and a widespread environmental pollutant. The frequencies of sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs), nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) and chromosomal aberrations were analysed in maternal bone marrow and fetal liver and/or lung cells of mice, following maternal treatment with cadmium chloride, on gestational days 8 through 10. The embryotoxic effects and morphological changes on day 18 fetuses were also studied. Cadmium chloride is readily transferred across the placenta and significant levels were detected in both the placenta and fetus. N

Maternal exposure to 1,1,2-trichloroethylene affects myelin in the hippocampal formation of the developing rat.

The effect of 1,1,2-trichloroethylene (TCE), an industrial solvent, on myelin in the dorsal hippocampus of the developing rat was investigated. Rat pups were exposed to TCE via their dams' drinking water while in utero and until they were sacrificed at 21 days of age. Frozen coronal sections through the dorsal hippocampus were stained for the presence of myelin using a modification of the Heidenhain procedure developed for frozen sections. A significant decrease in myelinated fibers was found in the stratum lacunosum-moleculare, an area comprised of distal dendritic profiles of CA1 pyramidal n

Maternal exposure to phthalates and nanoplastics, isolated or combined: Impacts on placental structure, development, and antioxidant defense as a trigger for maternal-fetal adversities.

The placenta is an essential maternal-fetal organ for the healthy development of the fetus, linking maternal and fetal circulations. Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as phthalates derived from plastic residues, may impair offspring development and increase the risk of metabolic disorders. Plastics also degrade into microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs), which can cross the placenta, carrying EDCs and impacting fetal development. The objective of this study was to investigate whether gestational exposure to a phthalate mixture (PM) and NPs interferes with the maternal-fetal inte

Independent and joint effects of prenatal maternal smoking and maternal exposure to second-hand smoke on the development of adolescent obesity: a longitudinal study.

AIM: To examine associations of prenatal maternal smoking and second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure with the development of adolescent obesity. METHODS: Longitudinal data (1991-2007) from National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development involving mothers that smoked and or exposed to SHS during the year before birth were analysed. Adolescent obesity in ages 12.0-15.9 years was defined as a BMI ≥ 95th percentile. Generalised estimating equations (GEE) were used for the analyses. RESULTS: Obesity was more prevalent among adolescents whose moth

Maternal smoking and environmental tobacco smoke exposure and the risk of allergic diseases in Japanese infants: the Osaka Maternal and Child Health Study.

PURPOSE: It remains controversial whether environmental tobacco smoke increases the risk of allergic diseases. The present prospective cohort study examined whether in utero exposure to maternal smoking and postnatal exposure to environmental tobacco smoke were associated with the development of wheeze, asthma, and atopic eczema in Japanese infants. METHODS: Study subjects included 763 infants. Data were obtained through the use of questionnaires completed by the mother during pregnancy and at 2 to 9 and 16 to 24 months postdelivery. Information regarding maternal smoking during pregnancy and
