Maternal and Foetal Health Implications of Vitamin D Status during Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: To what extent does the circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentration help to meet the physiological needs of humans is an ongoing subject of debate. Remaining unexposed to the sun to reduce melanoma cancer risk, current lifestyle with less out door activities, and increasing obesity rates, which in turn increases the storage of vitamin D in the adipose tissue, are presumably factors that contribute to the substantial upsurge in the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in humans. Since evidence is lacking regarding the appropriate cut-off points to define vitamin D status d

Maternal imprisonment, economic marginality, and unmet health needs in early adulthood.

There is relatively little research on access to the health care needed by children whose mothers have been incarcerated, and even fewer studies of how effects of lack of access continue and cumulate as these children transition from living with parents, parent surrogates, or foster care into adulthood. We find in a nationally representative U.S. panel study (n=9418 participants from 1995 to 2007-2008 in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent and Adult Health) that young adult children of incarcerated mothers are less likely to receive the health care they need. These effects hold in mo

Navigating motherhood and maternal transitional infant feeding: Learnings for health professionals.

Given the lifelong associations between infant diet and weight, understanding maternal transitional infant feeding decisions can assist efforts to establish healthy eating habits early in life. Feeding experiences were explored using semi-structured interviews with 15 first-time mothers who were selected based on their concerns about their infants' weight in an infant feeding survey. Thematic synthesis of the interview transcripts identified three main themes: (1) Expectations of a "responsible mother", (2) Trusting oneself and trust in others, and (3) From stress to successful feeding. Addressing Maternal Health During CDC's Ebola Response in the United States.

Previous outbreaks suggest that pregnant women with Ebola virus disease (EVD) are at increased risk for severe disease and death. Healthcare workers who treat pregnant women with EVD are at increased risk of body fluid exposure. Despite the absence of pregnant women with EVD in the United States, CDC activated the Maternal Health Team (MHT), a functional unit dedicated to emergency preparedness and response issues, on October 18, 2014. We describe major activities of the MHT. A high-priority MHT activity was to publish guiding principles early in the response. The MHT also prepared guidance do…

Prenatal maternal mental health and fetal growth restriction: a systematic review.

Maternal mental disorders during pregnancy are associated with a range of adverse health outcomes for offspring. This systematic review examines studies reporting on the relationship between maternal depression, anxiety or stress during pregnancy and fetal growth measured during pregnancy using ultrasound biometry. A systematic search of PsycINFO, Medline, Scopus, Web of Science and Embase was conducted and 1575 records were identified, with nine studies meeting inclusion criteria gathering data from over 7000 participants. All studies measured depression, six examined anxiety and depression,

Folic acid supplementation during pregnancy for maternal health and pregnancy outcomes.

BACKGROUND: During pregnancy, fetal growth causes an increase in the total number of rapidly dividing cells, which leads to increased requirements for folate. Inadequate folate intake leads to a decrease in serum folate concentration, resulting in a decrease in erythrocyte folate concentration, a rise in homocysteine concentration, and megaloblastic changes in the bone marrow and other tissues with rapidly dividing cells OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of oral folic acid supplementation alone or with other micronutrients versus no folic acid (placebo or same micronutrients but no foli

Maternal depressive symptoms and homeless children's mental health: risk and resiliency.

Homelessness places children at risk for mental health problems. Maternal depression may influence child outcomes through its effects on the mother-child relationship. This study examined the relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and child mental health in a sample of homeless mothers and their preschool children. The relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and child behavior problems was not significant. The data suggest that mental health services for homeless mothers and their young children are needed. However, 70% of the children in this sample had no behavior proble

Infant colic and maternal mental health: nursing research and practice concerns.

This study compared the mental health of 12 mothers who had infants with colic to 12 mothers of infants without colic. Colic was defined as infant fussing/crying of at least 2 hours/day for at least 5 out of 7 days, infant cry high-pitched and pain-sounding, and maternal report of infant inconsolability. Mental health was operationalized as scores on the Profile of Mood States and the Symptom Checklist-90R. Mothers of infants with colic had multidimensional psychological distress; they reported more bodily dysfunction, fears, disordered thinking, depression, anxiety, fatigue, hostility, impuls

Restricting legal abortion: Some maternal and child health effects in Romania.

The dramatic rise of the Romanian birth rate in 1967 following the restrictive abortion decree of late 1966 is well known. Less well known are significant changes in key maternal and child health indicators in the period after 1966. Possible reasons for these changes are discussed as are the implications of the Romanian experience for population policy and abortion research in the United States.

Forecasting the Value for Money of Mobile Maternal Health Information Messages on Improving Utilization of Maternal and Child Health Services in Gauteng, South Africa: Cost-Effectiveness Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence exists on the value for money of mHealth information programs in low resource settings. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to model the incremental cost-effectiveness of gradually scaling up text messaging services to pregnant women throughout Gauteng province, South Africa from 2012 to 2017. METHODS: Data collection occurred as part of a retrospective study in 6 health centers in Gauteng province. Stage-based short message service (SMS) text messages on maternal health were sent to pregnant women twice per week during pregnancy and continued until the infant's first b…

Maternal Use of Induction Heating Cookers During Pregnancy and Birth Outcomes: The Kyushu Okinawa Maternal and Child Health Study.

The effects of exposure to intermediate-frequency electromagnetic fields (IF-EMFs) during pregnancy on birth outcomes are uncertain. We investigated the association between the use of induction heating (IH) cookers, which are major sources of IF-EMFs, during pregnancy and preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), small-for-gestational-age (SGA), and birth weight, using data from a prebirth cohort study in Japan. Study participants were 1,565 mothers with singleton pregnancies and the babies born from these pregnancies. We collected the data presented here using self-administered questionnai

Maternal perceptions of social context and adherence to maternal and child health (MCH) clinic recommendations among marginalized Bedouin mothers.

National maternal and child health (MCH) care systems often deliver universal health care recommendations that do not take into consideration the social context of infant care (IC) for marginalized groups. We examined associations between maternal perceptions of social context (MPSC) and adherence by minority Bedouin mothers in Israel to three commonly recommended IC practices. We conducted personal interviews with 464 mothers visiting 14 MCH clinics using a structured questionnaire based on findings from a previous focus-group study, and guided by constructs of the Health Beliefs Model. A Systematic Review of the Management of Maternal Obesity in Pregnancy: Antenatal Management, Outcomes, and Long-Term Implications on Maternal Health.

Maternal obesity is a looming worldwide health challenge with dire consequences regarding pregnancy outcomes and future maternal and offspring health. This systematic review synthesizes evidence from eight high-quality studies published between 2015 and 2024, discussing the management of maternal obesity during pregnancy, antenatal care strategies, associated perinatal outcomes, and long-term maternal health risks. The review identifies a strong correlation between maternal obesity and the increased chances for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), hypertensive disorders, preterm birth, cesarea…

The ELEVATE Maternal Health Center of Excellence: A Program to Reduce Maternal Morbidity From Substance Use Disorder in Utah.

Substance use (SU) and mental health disorders are the leading cause of maternal deaths in the United States, and individuals living in rural communities and those who identify as Native American or Alaska Native are disproportionately affected. The new ELEVATE Maternal Health Center of Excellence brings together an interdisciplinary team and strong community partnerships to help address these concerns by rigorously developing and evaluating interventions to improve the care of, and reduce mortality and morbidity for, pregnant patients with SU disorder (SUD) with a focus on rural and Native po…

Maternal History of Child Sexual Abuse and Maladaptive Outcomes in Sexually Abused Children: The Role of Maternal Mental Health.

The effects of child sexual abuse (CSA) have been found to surpass generations as maternal history of CSA is associated with increased difficulties in sexually abused children. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying this association. The present study aimed to test maternal mental health symptoms including psychological distress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and dissociation as mediators of the relationship between maternal CSA and children's internalizing, externalizing, and dissociation symptoms in a large sample of sexually abused children. A total of 99

Maternal but not fetoplacental health can be improved by metformin in a murine diet-induced model of maternal obesity and glucose intolerance.

Maternal obesity is a global problem that increases the risk of short- and long-term adverse outcomes for mother and child, many of which ar … e placenta into the fetal circulation and entered fetal tissue. Metformin has beneficial effects on maternal health beyond glycaemic control. However, despite improvements in maternal physiology, metformin did not prevent fetal growth restriction or placental ageing. The high uptake of metformin into the placental and fetal circulation highlights the potential fo …

Bi-directional associations between maternal and infant sleep, and maternal mental health from late pregnancy to 2 years postpartum.

Evidence on longitudinal bi-directional relationships between sleep and mental health in the perinatal periods is lacking, with infant sleep rarely considered in this relationship. This study analysed data from a randomised controlled trial to investigate the bi-directional relationships between maternal sleep, infant sleep, and maternal depressive and anxiety symptoms, and explored moderators of these associations. A nulliparous community sample (N = 163, Mage = 33.47, SDage = 3.52) self-reported depressive and anxiety symptoms, maternal sleep, and infant sleep over 7 timepoints from 30 weeks
