BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and neonatal mortality rate (NMR) are key indicators of population health and health system performance. Yet longitudinal cross-country evidence on how macroeconomic conditions-such as income growth, inflation, and unemployment-relate to maternal and neonatal mortality remains limited.
METHODS: We assembled a balanced country-level panel of 152 countries for 1991-2023 using World Health Organization mortality series and World Bank World Development Indicators. Outcomes (MMR, NMR) were modelled in natural logarithms; GDP per capita was log-transformed…

Maternal mortality remains a major public health problem in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This case-control study, conducted in four health zones of the province of Maniema, aimed to identify the independent determinants of maternal death. A total of 197 maternal death cases were matched with 394 controls (surviving women). Multivariate analysis showed that lack of attendance at antenatal care visits, non-use of the partograph, receiving antenatal consultations in community health centers, as well as delivery in these facilities, were significant risk factors for maternal mortality. In…

IMPORTANCE: Accurately measuring maternal mortality trends has been challenging due to changes in data collection. This work disambiguates trends from the effects of introducing the pregnancy checkbox on death certificates and also analyzes closely related fetal and infant mortality.
OBJECTIVE: To describe trends in maternal, fetal, and infant deaths since 2000, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A national, population-level, epidemiological, cross-sectional analysis during 2000 to 2023 was conducted as well as a staggered difference-in-differen…

ObjectivesThe rate of perinatal mortality is an important indicator of maternal and neonatal health. Identification of risk factors for perinatal mortality may be effective in its prevention. Accordingly, this study aimed to identify maternal risk factors of perinatal mortality.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted on 547 stillbirths and 709 neonatal deaths at Ghaem Hospital of Mashhad, Iran, during 2008-2019. The data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire in two parts of stillbirth (maternal diseases, main complication, and final diagnosis) and specifications of neonatal

BACKGROUND: Individuals with cancer during pregnancy are a medically complex patient population that is anticipated to grow. A better understanding of this population and patterns of risk at time of delivery would offer an opportunity for providers to mitigate maternal morbidity.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence in the United States of concurrent cancer diagnoses at time of delivery by cancer type and associated maternal morbidity and mortality.
STUDY DESIGN: Using the National Inpatient Sample, we identified delivery-associated hospitalizations between 2007 and 2018. C

IMPORTANCE: The risk of serious long-term outcomes for infants born to individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) is not fully characterized, nor is it well understood whether risks are modified by infant diagnosis of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS).
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the risk of postneonatal infant mortality among infants with a NOWS diagnosis or born to individuals with OUD.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The study team conducted a retrospective cohort study of 390 075 infants born from 2007 through 2018 to mothers who were enrolled in Tennessee Medicaid from 183 da

OBJECTIVES: Public health interventions to reduce maternal mortality have largely focused on obstetric causes of death. However, previous studies have noted that non-obstetrics factors, such as motor vehicle accidents, substance overdoses, homicides, and suicides, may account for a large proportion of maternal deaths. The study objective was to examine trends in maternal deaths from non-obstetric causes across races in the United States (US).
METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 80,710,348 live births using data from the "Birth Data" and "Mortality Multiple Cause…

OBJECTIVE: To examine long-term risks of mortality after a pregnancy complicated by severe maternal morbidity.
METHODS: We analyzed a longitudinal cohort of 1,229,306 women who delivered in the province of Quebec, Canada from 1989 through 2016. Severe maternal morbidity included conditions such as cerebrovascular accidents, acute renal failure, severe preeclampsia, and other life-threatening complications. The outcome was in-hospital mortality after the last pregnancy, categorized as postpartum (42 days or fewer after delivery) and long-term (43 days to 29 years after delivery). We estimated

Hypertensive disorders are a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite advances in prevention and clinical management, women in low-resource countries continue to bear the burden of the sequelae of severe pre-eclampsia-eclampsia. Sustainable strategies to improve the care of women with hypertensive disease, to identify those at risk for hypertensive disease, and to reduce the risk of eclampsia will require partnerships between clinicians and health policy makers. Resources are needed to scale up healthcare access and infrastructure, establish evidence-based protocols

BACKGROUND: The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include reducing the global maternal mortality rate to less than 70 per 100,000 live births and ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under five years of age, in every country, by 2030. Maternal and perinatal death audit and review is widely recommended as an intervention to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality, and to improve quality of care, and could be key to attaining the SDGs. However, there is uncertainty over the most cost-effective way of auditing and reviewing deaths: community-based audit (verbal an…

We retrospectively evaluated five maternal mortality cases that occurred in our institution within the last 10 years. Rate of maternal mortality was 24.5 per 100000 live births. Maternal mortality causes were cardiopulmonary failure secondary to veno-occlusive disease, septic shock secondary to osteosarcoma, pulmonary thromboembolism secondary to metastatic breast cancer, septic shock secondary to cholecystitis, and postpartum hemorrhage secondary to Niemann-Pick disease. Four out of five cases were evaluated as indirect maternal mortality cases. Three out of five cases ended up with a healthy…

INTRODUCTION: Maternal mortality is a key indicator of maternal health and the general state of health care. This report summarizes maternal deaths in Wisconsin from January 2006 through December 2010.
METHODS: Maternal deaths were identified using death certificates and supporting links with infant birth and fetal death certificates. Suspected pregnancy-related maternal deaths were abstracted by a Wisconsin Maternal Mortality Review Team nurse abstractor. The entire team reviewed and analyzed these cases. If the death was deemed pregnancy related, a cause of death was determined, potential f…
