3-D Evaluation of temporary skeletal anchorage sites in the maxilla.

Waldenström macroglobulinemia is defined by the presence of monoclonal immunoglobulin IgM type (M-IgM) and evidence of lymphoplasmacytic bone marrow infiltration. The disease has an indolent course, the treatment is only initiated when the disease has begun to damage its carrier. The following symptoms are regarded as proven indications for initiating therapy: B symptoms, symptomatic lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, anemia with hemoglobin below 100 g / l or thrombocytopenia < 100 × 10(9)/l, caused by lymphoplasmacytic bone marrow infiltration. Frequent indications for initiating treatment includ

Transverse Asymmetries of the Maxilla Even in Healthy and Apparently Symmetrical Subjects.

In the formulation of an orthodontic treatment plan, the three-dimensional analysis of the dental arches represents a fundamental moment for … phology, but this in turn determines the function. In the case of unilateral mastication, the upper maxilla will be asymmetrical, so growing patients will have compensation on other skull bones. From these considerations arises the need for a careful study of the horizontal plane of the maxilla in the presence of a malocclusion during diagnostic evaluatio …

Ossifying fibroma in the maxilla and orbital floor: report of an uncommon case.

Benign fibro-osseous lesions occur when normal bone is replaced by cellular fibrous connective tissue and mineralized structures. One rare type of these lesions is the ossifying fibroma (OF). The aim of this study is to report an unusual case of OF in a 57-year-old female. Physical examination showed facial asymmetry without any tenderness, fluctuation, ocular pain, or ophthalmoplegia. Imaging exams revealed a solid mass involving the left maxilla and orbital floor. Surgical resection was performed without any complications or sequelae, and the histopathological results confirmed OF. Although …

Rare case report of an aggressive follicular lymphoid hyperplasia in maxilla.

Follicular lymphoid hyperplasia is a very rare though benign reactive process of an unknown pathogenesis that may resemble a follicular lymphoma, clinically and histologically. Oral reactive follicular hyperplasia (RFH) has been described on the hard or soft palate and at the base of the tongue. We describe here the first case of RFH presenting as an aggressive tumor on the right posterior side of the maxilla in a 24-year-old male patient. The lesion had a clinical evolution of 18 months and was noticed after the surgical extraction of the right third molar, although we cannot assume a cause-e…

A Case of Pentastomiasis at the Left Maxilla Bone in a Patient with Thyroid Cancer.

Pentastomiasis, a zoonotic parasite infection, is typically found in the respiratory tract and viscera of the host, including humans. Here, we report for the first time an extremely rare case of intraosseous pentastomiasis in the human maxilla suffering from medication related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). A 55-year-old male had continuously visited the hospital for MRONJ which had primarily developed after bisphosphonate and anti-neoplastic administration for previous bone metastasis of medullary thyroid cancer. Pain, bone exposure, and pus discharge in the right mandible and left maxilla…

Myxoid Chondrosarcoma of Maxilla in a Pediatric Patient: A Rare Case Report.

Myxoid variant of chondrosarcoma is an uncommon potentially lethal malignant tumor which is even rare in pediatric age group. In the present paper, we report one such case of intermediate grade myxoid chondrosarcoma of left side of maxilla in a 12-year-old girl. The present case had a firm, painless, and lobulated growth in premolar-molar region which was associated with bicortical expansion. Maxillofacial imaging showed ill-defined radiolucency with displaced maxillary molars. Osteolytic changes were evident with the alveolus and walls of maxillary sinus. Owing to the age of the patient, surg…

Bronchogenic adenocarcinoma metastatic tumor mimicking a dentoalveolar abscess in the maxilla.

Intraosseous metastatic tumors (IOM) in maxilla are less frequent than the soft tissue metastatic tumors. Lung and bronchogenic metastatic tumors are uncommon in the maxilla. We present a maxillary bronchogenic metastasis with a rare clinical appearance. IOM was misdiagnosed as a dentoalveolar abscess and treated with antibiotics for 3 weeks. After not responding to antibiotics, the patient's general dental practitioner forwarded the patient to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The associated tooth was extracted and the patient was recalled 1 week later. No signs of improvement…

A pilot study on spatial changes in the maxilla caused by osteopathic therapy.

OBJECTIVES: A variety of theories on the pathogenesis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) exists resulting in treatment approaches ranging from the fabrication of occlusal splints to alternative treatment modalities such as osteopathy. The goal of this pilot study was to investigate whether osteopathic treatment causes spatial changes in the maxilla. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Following ethics commission approval and informed patient consent, three patients diagnosed with TMD participated in this investigation. In addition to regular treatment, an individualized mandibular occlusal splint was fab…

Benign fibrous histiocytoma of the maxilla: a case report and review of literature.

Benign fibrous histiocytoma (BFH) is a mesenchymal tumor which commonly affects the skin of extremities. Histologically, BFH of soft tissues and bone shows similar features, but BFH of the bone is rare with less than 100 cases reported worldwide and usually it involves tibia, femur, and pelvic bone. As far as the oral cavity is concerned, majority of the BFHs are found in the soft tissues of the buccal mucosa, gingiva, lower and upper lips, soft palate, and floor of the mouth. Occurrence of this tumor in the jaw bones is extremely rare as only one case of the maxilla and six cases of the mandi…

Primary intraosseous Kaposi's sarcoma of the maxilla in AIDS: a case report.

In China, Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is very rare. However, KS does occur as one of the complications in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Usually AIDS-related KS involves the lymph nodes, the skin and gastrointestinal tract. Intraosseous KS have been reported but it is very rare. We report a case of primary intraosseous KS of the maxilla in an AIDS patient, proven by pathology findings and showed multiple metastasis by positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT). To our knowledge, this is the first report of primary intraosseous KS of the maxilla in an AIDS…

Use of forced eruption to enhance a pontic site in the anterior maxilla.

Extraction of teeth leads to bone resorption that can result in asymmetrical hard and soft tissue topography. This article describes a technique to enhance a pontic site in the anterior maxilla by using forced eruption as an alternative to conventional hard and soft tissue augmentation surgeries. Forced eruption is a well-known procedure and its use in developing a pontic site for a fixed dental prosthesis is described in this clinical report.
