Assessing effects of a media campaign on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention in Nigeria: results from the VISION Project.

BACKGROUND: In response to the growing HIV epidemic in Nigeria, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) initiated the VISION Project, which aimed to increase use of family planning, child survival, and HIV/AIDS services. The VISION Project used a mass-media campaign that focused on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention. This paper assesses to what extent program exposure translates into increased awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS. METHODS: This analysis is based on data from the 2002 and 2004 Nigeria (Bauchi, Enugu, and Oyo) Family Planning and Reproductive Health Surve

Reducing suicidal ideation through protective media content in India: randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Responsible media reporting of suicide is a population-level suicide prevention intervention, yet there is no experimental evidence from low-income settings. AIMS: We assessed the effects of exposure to educative suicide prevention content and stories of surviving a suicide crisis in the print media on reducing suicidality in India. METHOD: A three-arm randomised controlled trial (Clinical Trials Registry of India, ref: CTRI/2022/09/045439) was conducted in Chennai, India, between August 2023 and March 2024. Participants were young adults (18-29 years), recruited through social m

Exposure to Risk Information Detail (RID) in News Coverage of Anorexia Increases Self-Efficacy to Perform Risky Behaviors.

In an online randomized experiment with 419 Israeli adult women using two rounds of data collected at a one-month interval, we test the effects of exposure to messages with greater and lesser detail about behaviors that increase personal risk (RID: Risk Information Detail) on women's self-efficacy to perform the risky behaviors. Participants viewed news media videos about anorexia (or a control video about vaccination). Video messages varied according to the amount of detail provided regarding the specific risky behaviors (High vs. low RID), and message format (narrative or expository). Effect

S-cone sensitivity in unilateral aphakia.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and blue light has been shown to cause retinal damage in animals. In humans, it has been argued that the loss of short-wavelength (S) cone sensitivity during normal aging may be related to chronic light exposure. METHODS: We measured sensitivity to blue and yellow lights presented on bright yellow backgrounds at several retinal eccentricities in both eyes of an observer with long-standing unilateral aphakia. RESULTS: For yellow lights, where media absorption is not a major factor, there was a 2-fold loss in sensitivity of long (L) and mediu

What are influencers feed-ing us?: A photo-voice approach on emerging adults' social media food environment.

Healthy eating is a complex and often confusing topic, especially for young people. Conflicting advice, trends, and body ideals contribute to a stigmatising food environment in which social media influencers (SMIs) strongly shape perceptions of what counts as a 'Работает' diet. However, little is known about the specific food content that emerging adults encounter in their own social media feeds and how this influences their understanding of healthy eating. Guided by Source Credibility Theory and Expectancy-Value Theory, this study used a photo-voice approach combining content analysis and focu

Digital Media for Health Outcomes: Evaluation Study of a Massive Online Open Course.

BACKGROUND: Digital media has emerged as a vital tool for the rapid dissemination of public health information to vast audiences. During the COVID-19 pandemic, social media-based health communication kept audiences informed, encouraged health-seeking behaviors, and helped address rampant misinformation. However, the impact of these digital communications was limited by a lack of training in leveraging online advertising tools, behavioral insights, and marketing practices to target, test, and scale social behavioral communications for health. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted an urgent need for

Social media use and appearance pressure among midlife women: Associations with fat talk and old talk.

With the advent of social media, body image concerns have increased among women who frequently engage in social media use. Emerging evidence suggests that midlife women experience negative body image outcomes associated with social media use, and women's body image concerns and social media use may contribute to negative body and age focused talk. Further, negative self-talk while socializing with friends and family may reflect internalized concerns about body image and aging. This study examined associations between social media use, internalization of appearance pressure from social media, t

Development and evaluation of a digital single-session reappraisal intervention to shift negative self-focused social media interpretations.

Social media is fraught with ambiguity and opportunities for making skewed interpretations. Negative interpretation bias, or the tendency to assign negative meanings in response to ambiguous information, is associated with mental health problems like depression and anxiety, while positive interpretation bias, or the tendency to make positive interpretations in response to ambiguity, may be protective. Interpretation bias is a modifiable treatment target in cognitive interventions. Reappraisal, which involves considering different perspectives, may hold promise for shifting negative self-focuse

Guarding serenity in the digital age: mindfulness as a buffer against social media-induced psychological discomfort in older tourists.

INTRODUCTION: While social media enriches senior tourists' travel experiences, its psychological adverse impacts remain understudied. Existing literature mainly focuses on youth social media fatigue or older adults' physical digital divide. Rooted in Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study fills the research gap by exploring the internal psychological mechanisms of Social Media-Induced Travel Anxiety (SMITA), its linkage with resource loss and seniors' serenity, and the moderating effect of mindfulness. METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional design was adopted. Survey data were co

Social Media Constructions of Alcohol as Emotional Coping and Social Connection in Ghana: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is a leading contributor to disease and injury worldwide; yet, it remains embedded in cultural practices associated with pleasure, social connection, and emotional relief. While global research has documented both the epidemiological burden and the social meanings of drinking, little is known about how alcohol-related meanings are circulated and normalized within African social media environments. OBJECTIVE: This study explores how alcohol is represented in Ghanaian social media discourse, with particular attention to emotional coping, social interaction, and everyday well

Smartphone acquisition as an inflection point in early adolescence digital exposome: relevance to mental health.

OBJECTIVE: Acquisition of the first smartphone represents a major developmental transition. However, evidence on its effects on adolescent health and behavior remains limited. We assessed associations between first smartphone acquisition around age 12 and changes in mental health, environmental and lifestyle (exposomic) factors, and examined potential pathways underlying these associations. METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal data from 3,486 participants in the U.S. Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study who did not have a smartphone by age 12 (2-year assessment wave). We tested th

The effects of diagnostic x-ray and contrast media on lymphocyte chromosomes.

On the present in vitro study with or without x-ray exposure, employing the sister chromatid exchange (SCE) analysis as well as the conventional chromosome investigation, we studied the effects of six contrast media, normally used in daily radiodiagnostic procedures, on the peripheral lymphocyte chromosomes. The conventional chromosome analysis demonstrated that the frequency of chromosome-type aberrations such as dicentric and ring chromosomes was not elevated solely by the addition of contrast media at cultivation. The diagnostic x-ray combined with the presence of each contrast medium demon

Peeling lead paint turns into poisonous dust. Guess where it ends up? A media campaign to prevent childhood lead poisoning in New York City.

Successful public health media campaigns promote messages, increase awareness, engage the public, and encourage behavior change. Between 2004 and 2006, the Lead Poisoning Prevention Program of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene conducted a media campaign grounded in social learning theory and the social marketing model to increase parents' awareness of childhood lead poisoning, ways to protect their children, and property owners' legal responsibility to fix peeling lead paint safely, and increase awareness of regulatory changes and encourage enforcement of New York City'

Late-onset allergy-like reactions to X-ray contrast media.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of the present review is to describe recent insight into the pathomechanism of the late-onset allergy-like reactions which affect 2-3% of contrast medium-exposed patients, and to give advice regarding prophylactic measures to avoid recurrence of such reactions. RECENT FINDINGS: It is well recognized that the majority of contrast media-induced late-onset reactions are cutaneous reactions of the maculopapular, urticarial and angioedema types, with occasional occurrence of more serious, bullous eruptions. Recent findings strongly indicate that these reactions are T

The laboratory diagnosis of melioidosis.

The recognition of unusual, but important, pathogens such as Burkholderia pseudomallei is essential for the rapid implementation of appropriate antimicrobial therapy--delays can be fatal. Melioidosis should be considered as a potential diagnosis for any patient with exposure to areas of endemicity, and thus laboratories should be aware of the differential features of the disease and the causative organism. Isolation of B. pseudomallei is readily achieved using standard culture media such as blood, MacConkey or cystine-lactose-electrolyte-deficient (CLED) agars, and routine blood culture broths
