The liability to develop parkinsonian symptoms was evaluated in 105 outpatients with idiopathic blepharospasm (IBS; 54 cases) or IBS associated to oromandibular dystonia (Meige's syndrome; 51 cases) mean age 70.3 +/- 9.6 years, and compared with an age- and sex-matched population. Eleven patients developed Parkinson's disease in the blepharospasm group, whereas only 2 of 105 patients were affected in the control group. Our results suggest that patients with IBS either isolated or associated with oromandibular dystonia are more prone to develop parkinsonian symptoms.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, multisystemic autoimmune disease of variable presentation. Massive ascites in the context of SLE is infrequent. Tjalma syndrome, also named pseudo-pseudo Meigs syndrome, is a rare complication of serositis in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Nine cases of tubal carcinoma were found in a period of 20 years in JIPMER Hospital among approximately 9,000 gynaecological malignancies. Most patients were diagnosed as malignant ovarian tumour, but two cases presented unusually, one as Meig's syndrome and another as acute hemoperitoneum. This often stressed symptom of amber discharge or hydrops tubae profluens could not be elicited in any patient. All the patients underwent surgical treatment and radiotherapy or chemotherapy. The period of follow up ranged from two months to four and half years.

Three patients who presented initially with dystonia and subsequently developed typical idiopathic parkinsonism were evaluated. One patient presented with a writer's cramp, one with axial dystonia, and one with Meige syndrome. All three displayed amelioration of their dystonia with progression of their parkinsonism over a period of 2 to 15 years. Treatment with levodopa gave some relief of the parkinsonism symptoms in two patients but exacerbated or reactivated the dystonia. We studied eight patients with different types of dystonia by administering agonists and antagonists of acetylcholine (ACh) and dopamine (DA). In all seven patients who received physostigmine, there was an exacerbation of the dystonia. All six patients who received anticholinergic agents improved, as did five of eight who received bromocriptine. We conducted a single-blind trial of gamma-vinyl-GABA (GVG) in nine patients: seven with tardive dyskinesia, one with Meige syndrome, and one with Tourette syndrome. Five tardive dyskinesia patients completed the entire 11-week study and, as a group, demonstrated significant decreases in dyskinesia scores. 13 patients with hemifacial spasm and 19 patients with blepharospasm (essential blepharospasm or Meige syndrome) were treated with injection of botulinum A toxin in the eyelids.
