A qualitative exploration of menstrual management practices and the impact of menstruation on the livelihoods of female sex workers in a peri-urban area of western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about female sex worker (FSW) experiences with menstruation and its impact on their economic livelihood and health. To support a future intervention aimed at improving menstrual hygiene management (MHM) for FSW, this study sought to explore FSW's views of MHM, its impact on work, and related practices during client engagement. METHODS: This qualitative study conducted seven focus group discussions among 57 FSWs in Kisumu, western Kenya, between June and September 2023. Semi-structured guides assessed current MHM practices, the impact of menstruation on work and liv…

Running Economy After a Low- and High-Intensity Training Session in Naturally Menstruating Endurance-Trained Female Athletes: The FENDURA Project.

The ability to maintain running economy is generally evaluated during a long continuous exercise bouts, and it is unclear whether the menstrual cycle phase acts as a confounder. The first aim of this study was to evaluate the ability to maintain running economy during typical 1-h low- (LIT) and high-intensity training (HIT) sessions in female athletes. The second aim was to investigate whether menstrual cycle phase affected the ability to maintain running economy. Naturally menstruating endurance-trained females performed three LIT (n = 16) (45%-55% of the maximal velocity achieved during the

Naturally menstruating women exhibit lower cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity than oral contraceptive users during the lower hormone phase.

The present study evaluated cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) across the menstrual/pill cycle in naturally menstruating women (NAT women) and women using oral hormonal contraceptives (OCP women). In 21 NAT women (23 ± 4 years old) and 22 OCP women (23 ± 3 years old), cardiovagal BRS and circulating concentrations of estradiol and progesterone were evaluated during the lower hormone (early follicular/placebo pill) and higher hormone (late follicular to early luteal/active pill) phases. During the lower hormone phase, cardiovagal BRS up, down and mean gain were lower in NAT women (15.6 ±

Influence of menstruation on the microbiota of healthy women's labia minora as analyzed using a 16S rRNA gene-based clone library method.

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of menstruation on the bacterial population of healthy Japanese women's vulvas, especially the labia minora. Labia minora swabs were obtained from 10 premenopausal, nonpregnant Japanese women at premenstruation and on day 2 of menstruation. Vaginal swabs were also obtained from 3 out of the 10 women. No significant difference was found in the average bacterial cell count between the menstruation and premenstruation samples. Molecular analysis using a 16S rRNA gene-based clone library method detected 22 genera from the labia minora swabs (tot…

Serum FSH level below 10 mIU/mL at twelve years old is an index of spontaneous and cyclical menstruation in Turner syndrome.

The gonadal function of patients with Turner syndrome (TS) is variable. Individuals with mosaicism characterized by 45,X/46,XX or 45,X/47,XXX are more likely to experience spontaneous menarche compared with other karyotypes. Prepubertal gonadotropins of TS patients with spontaneous menarche are reportedly normal or significantly lower than those of patients with induced menarche. The present study investigated an index of spontaneous and cyclical menstruation at 10-12 years old in TS. Subjects comprised 50 patients with TS, divided into three groups: Group A (n=7), with spontaneous menarche be…

Redefining the contribution of retrograde menstruation to endometriosis: single-cell analysis of endometriotic lesions suggests a process more complex than simple autografting.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a common gynecological disorder causing pelvic pain and infertility. While generally attributed to peritoneal implants of endometrium derived from retrograde menstruation, the contribution of cells from the circulation to the development of endometriotic lesions is unknown. Here, we describe the infiltration of circulating cells into endometriotic lesions. METHODS: Experimental endometriosis was induced in mice by transplanting uterine tissue from donor mice that express green fluorescence protein (GFP) into peritoneal cavity of recipient wild type mice. Lesions we…

Interleukin 6 at menstruation promotes the proliferation and self-renewal of endometrial mesenchymal stromal/stem cells through the WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: At menstruation, the functional layer of the human endometrium sheds off due to the trigger of the release of inflammatory factors, including interleukin 6 (IL-6), as a result of a sharp decline in progesterone levels, leading to tissue breakdown and bleeding. The endometrial mesenchymal stem-like cells (CD140b+CD146+ eMSC) located in the basalis are responsible for the cyclical regeneration of the endometrium after menstruation. Endometrial cells from the menstruation phase have been proven to secrete a higher amount of IL-6 and further enhance the self-renewal and clonogenic acti…

Menstruation and reproduction in women with polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) poisoning: long-term follow-up interviews of the women from the Taiwan Yucheng cohort.

BACKGROUND: In 1979 in Taiwan, about 2000 people were poisoned by cooking oil contaminated with heat-degraded polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Victims developed chloracne and other symptoms; the illness is called Yucheng (oil disease). The chemicals persist in the victims' bodies and some are toxic to the female reproductive system in experimental animals. METHODS: In 1993-1994, we identified the living Yucheng women and neighbourhood controls and interviewed them about their reproductive experience. Of the 596 living Yucheng women aged 30-59 years, we found 368, and interviewed 356. We iden

Irregular menstruation and hyperandrogenaemia in adolescence are associated with polycystic ovary syndrome and infertility in later life: Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 study.

STUDY QUESTION: Do teenage girls with a history of menstrual irregularity and/or elevated androgen levels in adolescence exhibit an increased risk of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and/or infertility later on in adulthood? SUMMARY ANSWER: Our results suggest that menstrual irregularity and/or elevated androgen levels at 16 years are still associated with symptoms of PCOS at 26 years as well as infertility problems at 26 years but not with decreased pregnancy or delivery rates at 26 years. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Hyperandrogenaemia is associated with menstrual irregularity, hirsutism, acne a

Effects of SGLT-2 inhibitors on clinical and biological hyperandrogenism and menstruation irregularities in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome: A systematic review of randomized trials.

INTRODUCTION: Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common chronic condition characterized by insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism, leading to significant health risks and impaired quality of life. Sodium-glucose transporter type 2 inhibitors have shown promise in improving the metabolic profile of women with polycystic ovary syndrome. However, their impact on hormonal parameters and cycle disorders remains uncertain. METHODS: This systematic review analyzed randomized clinical trials published up to 1 December 2023, comparing sodium-glucose transporter type 2 inhibitors to metformin, other antid

Persistence survey of toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 producing Staphylococcus aureus and serum antibodies to this superantigen in five groups of menstruating women.

BACKGROUND: Menstrual Toxic Shock Syndrome (mTSS) is thought to be associated with the vaginal colonization with specific strains of Staphylococcus aureus TSST-1 in women who lack sufficient antibody titers to this toxin. There are no published studies that examine the seroconversion in women with various colonization patterns of this organism. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the persistence of Staphylococcus aureus colonization at three body sites (vagina, nares, and anus) and serum antibody to toxic shock syndrome toxin-producing Staphylococcus aureus among a small group of healt

Factors associated with menstrual-related disturbances following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination: a Spanish retrospective observational study in formerly menstruating women.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence suggests a potential link between the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and menstrual changes in women who were menstruating at the time of vaccination. Nevertheless, the prevalence of this event in those with secondary amenorrhea for different causes, i.e. formerly menstruating women, remains unclear. It is plausible that, analogous to those observed in currently menstruating women, they experienced some degree of alteration in their reproductive health, defined here as menstrual-related disturbances. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to analyze this phenomenon and identify the

Comparison of respiratory responses to exercise under different heat-stressful environments between oral contraceptive and naturally menstruating ovulating female athletes.

The present study conducted a secondary analysis of previous data (Lei et al., 2017, 2019) to compare exercise-induced respiratory responses under heat stress between the early follicular (EF)/quasi-EF and mid-luteal (ML)/quasi-ML phases in naturally menstruating and oral contraceptive pill (OCP)-using female athletes. Additionally, the study aimed to examine the associations between respiratory responses, thermoregulation, and hormonal profiles within each group. Sixteen endurance-trained female athletes participated: eight with a natural menstrual cycle (NM group) and eight using OCP (OCP gr

The effect of adjuvant mitotane therapy of the adrenocortical carcinoma on the endometrium and its clinical consequences in menstruating women. Literature review and authors' own experiences.

Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant tumour that originates from the adrenal cortex. It is a highly aggressive cancer characterised … pected during adjuvant mitotane therapy of ACC in menstruating women. Heavy uterine bleeding during menstruation may appear several months after the beginning of therapy. The likely mechanism for heavy menstrual bleeding is complex. Menorrhagia can occur due to the toxic effect of mitotane in the form of a haemorrhagic diathesis, while long-term treatment (ove …

Spontaneous pregnancy after tracking ovulation during menstruation: A case report of a woman with premature ovarian insufficiency and repeated failure of in vitro fertilization.

The diagnosis of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is devastating in women of reproductive age because of the small chance of spontaneous pregnancy. Here, we report a very rare case with POI and repeated failure of in vitro fertilization (IVF) where the final result was natural fertilization following guidance to have sexual intercourse during menstruation as ovulation was monitored. Estradiol valerate was used to increase the thickness of the endometrium and stop the menstrual bleeding. There was a serum level of 208.44 IU/L of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) 14 days after the ovulatio…
