Transcultural Psychiatry in Medical Ethics: Assessing Decision-Making Capacity within the Lens of an East African Refugee.

AbstractA 29-year-old female East African refugee with no formal psychiatric history and a medical history significant for HIV was admitted for failure to thrive and concern for bizarre behavior in the context of abandonment by her husband and separation from her child. After psychiatric evaluation, it was determined that she did not have the capacity to care for herself independently; adult protective services then pursued and was awarded guardianship. While admitted, the patient repeatedly refused medical treatment, had a feeding tube placed for forced nutrition and medications (though she d

Impact of mental disorders on unplanned readmissions for congestive heart failure patients: a population-level study.

AIMS: Reducing preventable hospitalization for congestive heart failure (CHF) patients is a challenge for health systems worldwide. CHF patients who also have a recent or ongoing mental disorder may have worse health outcomes compared with CHF patients with no mental disorders. This study examined the impact of mental disorders on 28 day unplanned readmissions of CHF patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: This retrospective cohort study used population-level linked public and private hospitalization and death data of adults aged ≥18 years who had a CHF admission in New South Wales, Australia, between

Competency to stand trial and the seriousness of the charge.

An e-mail/telephone survey of all active North American residency training programs in veterinary pathology was conducted in September 2005. The purpose of this survey was to determine current numbers of trainees, their program length and type, and salaries; to compare current numbers to five years earlier; and, finally, to gauge interest in expanding current programs. All 41 training institutions contacted responded to the survey. Briefly, the survey found that there are currently 235 veterinary pathology residents, for a mean of 5.7 residents per training program. The number of residents cur

A bilingual advantage in task switching.

This study investigated the possibility that lifelong bilingualism may lead to enhanced efficiency in the ability to shift between mental sets. We compared the performance of monolingual and fluent bilingual college students in a task-switching paradigm. Bilinguals incurred reduced switching costs in the task-switching paradigm when compared with monolinguals, suggesting that lifelong experience in switching between languages may contribute to increased efficiency in the ability to shift flexibly between mental sets. On the other hand, bilinguals did not differ from monolinguals in the differe

To What Extent Are Therapists Willing to Treat Suicide-Loss Survivors With Suicide Risk?

Introduction: Managing individuals at suicide risk poses significant challenges for mental health professionals (MHPs), particularly when these clients are also coping with the sudden loss of a loved one. Existing research suggests that stigma and perceived lack of competence often affect MHPs' willingness to treat such cases. However, the extent to which symptom severity and the cause of loss (suicide vs. accident) influence MPHs' decisions remains unclear. In this study, we examined these factors and whether suicide prevention training moderates MHPs' willingness to treat and their perceived

Mental Health Needs of Asian American Older Adults: Bridging the Inequity Gap.

The mental health needs of Asian American older adults are complex and multifaceted. Despite their rich diversity, Asian American older adults face significant challenges, including mental health stigma, cultural stress, limited English proficiency, and historical trauma. In addition, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic reignited preexisting anti-Asian attitudes of hostility, discrimination, blame, and scapegoating. The historical context of Asian immigration to the United States, impact of race-based discrimination, and recent resurgence of anti-Asian hate crimes impact mental health in Asi

Consumers' experiences of rights-based mental health laws: Lessons from Victoria, Australia.

Many countries embarked on reforms of mental health law in the wake of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. These reforms have had varying levels of success. This paper considers the experience of consumers in the Victorian mental health system, drawing on an evaluation that asked consumers and clinicians about their knowledge and experience of rights under the Victorian Mental Health Act, 2014. The data show that consumers were not informed of their rights, were not involved in decisions about treatment, were not able to access safeguards, and could not exercise their ri

Prevalence and measurement of anterior loop of the mandibular canal using CBCT: A cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anterior loop of the mental nerve is a very important anatomic landmark in implant placement and anterior mandibular osteotomies. PURPOSE: Two-dimensional imaging techniques are not competent enough to locate and measure the mental nerve loop in majority of the cases. Any injury to this loop results in pain/paresthesia/numbness in the region supplied by the mental nerve. The aim of this study is to analyze the prevalence and measure the length of the loop using cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) and calculate the average length and prevalence so that a safe margin can be giv

Individual on Death Row Receiving Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) for Catatonia: A Case Report.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is underused, logistically challenging for those who are justice-involved, and laced with ethical problems for those on death row. Herein we describe a case of a man without history of long-standing psychiatric illness who, after more than 15 years on death row, was hospitalized for altered mental status. After medical stabilization, the altered mental status persisted. On exam, he displayed signs of catatonic stupor with repetitive non-goal-directed motor activity, repetition of words, rigidity, and negativism, among others. The Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Sc

Ability to identify, explain and solve problems in everyday tasks: preliminary validation of a direct video measure of practical intelligence.

Recent developments in the definitional literature on mental retardation emphasize the need to ground the concept of adaptive behavior in an expanded model of intelligence, which includes practical and social intelligence. Development of a direct measure of practical intelligence might increase the likelihood that an assessment of this domain would be included in the diagnostic process of mental retardation. The current paper reports on the preliminary exploration of the validity and utility of using a videotaped portrayal of everyday tasks, with built-in errors, as a measure of practical inte

Self-Care Strategies of Emergency Nurses in Armed Conflict Areas: Experiences From the Field.

BACKGROUND: Emergency nurses working in conflict zones face extraordinary psychological, physical, and ethical challenges in environments characterised by violence, resource scarcity, and moral distress. Despite increasing recognition of core competencies in emergency nursing for armed conflict contexts, self-care strategies that enable sustained professional practice remain underexplored in the literature. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to explore the lived experiences and self-care strategies of nurses working in healthcare settings along the Saudi-Yemeni border. The sec

Psychological functioning in pregnant women who experienced complex trauma.

INTRODUCTION: The concept of complex trauma, which has been operationalized by the diagnosis of developmental trauma disorder (DTD) in children and adolescents, may contribute to our understanding of the large interindividual variability in maternal health and functioning among pregnant women who experienced childhood maltreatment. The study examines whether three groups of pregnant women (one including women who experienced childhood maltreatment and suffered from DTD, a second including women who experienced childhood maltreatment but did not suffer from DTD, and a third group including wome
