Improving the Quality of Health Care in Special Neonatal Care Units of India: A Before and After Intervention Study.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the efficacy of training health care workers (HCWs) in point-of-care quality improvement (POCQI) and a preterm newborn health care package (PHCP), followed by remote mentoring and supportive supervision in improving health care practices, neonatal survival, and morbidities in special neonatal care units (SNCUs). METHODS: This pre- and postintervention quality improvement study was conducted at 3 SNCUs in Madhya Pradesh, India from February 2017 to February 2019. Clinical care teams comprising doctors and nurses from the study sites were trained in POCQI and the PHCP.

"Where we wanna be": The role of structural violence and place-based trauma for street life-oriented Black men navigating recovery and reentry.

In this study, we used photovoice and grounded theory to understand the barriers and resources encountered by Black men navigating substance use recovery and/or reentry following incarceration in an urban, economically disadvantaged neighborhood. The conceptual framework that emerged highlighted the significant impact of traumatic disruptions to place and relationships, as well as an ongoing dialectical tension between considering passive participation in street life or choosing recovery. Regarding action steps, participants recommended investing in community infrastructure, rehabilitating adu

Scottish rheumatology sonography course: five-year experience of delivering a mentorship-model rheumatology ultrasound training programme accredited by the consortium for the accreditation of sonographic education.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ultrasound training for rheumatology practice in the UK is variable. Currently, there is no agreed minimum standard for training in ultrasound applied to rheumatology patient management. We present our experiences of implementing a competency driven ultrasound training, focused on hands and feet. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Rheumatology Sonography Course (RSC) was developed by the Scottish Rheumatology Ultrasound Group in collaboration with Glasgow Caledonian University. The RSC is delivered via a blended learning approach and includes training workshops, mentorship and clin

The argument for two-handed cataract surgery in veterinary ophthalmology.

Despite access to contemporary phacoemulsification technology and the strong shift to two-handed nucleofractis techniques in human medicine, a one-handed, single incision approach has persisted among Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. The perpetuation of techniques such as bowl-sculpting one-handed phacoemulsification in veterinary medicine is multifactorial; it is likely associated with the lack of two-handed training in residency programs, the challenges of learning on complex cases, the ease of teaching one-handed versus two-handed techniques to a resident, a

The iPeer2Peer Program: a pilot randomized controlled trial in adolescents with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) are at risk for physical, emotional, social and role challenges that negatively impact quality of life. Peer mentoring has been shown to improve positive health behaviours in adolescents with chronic disease while simultaneously providing social support. The objectives of this paper are to examine the feasibility and acceptability of an online peer mentoring program (iPeer2Peer Program) for adolescents with JIA. METHODS: The iPeer2Peer program was examined using a waitlist pilot randomized control trial (RCT). Participants were

Gender Differences in Self-reported Faculty Developmental Networks.

Scholars have long recognized gender variation in social relationship dynamics. However, how gender shapes developmental networking relationships for career advancement, particularly among university faculty members, is understudied. This area of research is important since women comprise an increasing proportion of faculty and yet report receiving less mentoring and lower career satisfaction, productivity, and advancement than their male counterparts. This cross-sectional study assessed gender differences in self-reported dimensions of faculty participants' developmental networks by collectin

"Just one of the guys" An application of the Occupational Wellbeing framework to graduates of a Men's Shed Program for young unemployed adult males with intellectual disability.

INTRODUCTION: Conceptualisation of occupation requires understanding of subjective wellbeing and experiences of occupation. Opportunities for participation in productivity activities, such as employment, may be limited for people with intellectual disability (ID). An occupational wellbeing framework was recently re-imagined to focus on the subjective meaning of a person's occupational life rather than occupational performance. This study analysed experiences and possible benefits to occupational wellbeing of young adult men with ID in an intergenerational mentoring program based on Australian

Co-occurrence of Violence-Related Risk and Protective Behaviors and Adult Support Among Male Youth in Urban Neighborhoods.

IMPORTANCE: Male youth in lower-resource neighborhoods bear a disproportionate burden of violence involvement, but little is known about clusters of specific violence-related behaviors to inform cross-cutting interventions that address multiple forms of violence. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between adult support and patterns of violence and risk or protective behavior co-occurrence among male youths in urban neighborhoods. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional analysis of baseline and end-of-program data from a recently completed cluster-randomized sexual violence prevent

Development and Acquisition of Knowledge of Youth Parasport Coaches.

The purpose of this study was to understand the learning experiences and acquisition of knowledge of youth parasport coaches. Five able-bodied male participants (M = 39 years old), who coached youth with a physical disability for an average of 7.4 years, participated in individual interviews. An inductive thematic analysis identified patterns within and across the data, allowing for description and interpretation of the meaning and importance of the themes. The results showed that coaches learned mostly from informal experiences, particularly through mentoring, trial and error, or use of techn

Building a System to Engage and Sustain Research Careers for Physicians.

There are increasing needs for physician-investigators to translate the rapid expansion of knowledge, technology/interventions, and big data into the clinical realm at a time of increasing age-related disabilities and communicable diseases. Yet, the number of physician-investigators has continued to decline, and only a small number of medical school graduates in the United States are actively engaged in research. This problem may be particularly pronounced in small- and medium-sized academic institutions due to more limited educational and mentoring infrastructure. Neither efforts by the feder

Psychological empowerment and relational catalysis: a quasi-experimental study on graduate education evaluation reform in the AI era.

INTRODUCTION: The rise of generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, DeepSeek) challenges traditional graduate evaluation systems centered on individual theses and standardized examinations. Current institutional responses-task redesign and AI skills training-have shown limited effectiveness, as they overlook the psychological internalization process, teacher-student relational dynamics, and their synergistic effects. METHODS: This study conducted a three-arm quasi-experiment with 155 doctoral students in education over one semester. Group A (traditional model) received no AI guidance; Group B received AI

Giving a boost: a free near-peer advising program for medical school applicants.

PROBLEM: One often overlooked cost of the medical school application process is that associated with access to quality premedical advising, which enables applicants to hone their essays and interview skills. To help address this socioeconomic inequity, Giving a Boost (GAB) was created at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine to provide free near-peer application advising to medical school applicants. APPROACH: Launched in 2020, GAB pairs applicants with medical school mentors who have recently completed the application process (based on shared backgrounds and goals), helping to demy

How can complex interventions be adapted to context? A qualitative analysis of the implementation of DREAMS in three Kenyan settings.

In Kenya, the DREAMS Partnership ("Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored and Safe") aims to reduce new HIV cases among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW; aged 10-24) through a comprehensive programme of interventions. The impact of DREAMS varies across settings but reasons for this are not well understood. One potential reason is the differential implementation of DREAMS interventions due to on-the-ground adaptations made by implementers. We sought to understand if, how, and why DREAMS delivery was adapted in three Kenyan settings, so that complex interventions like DREAMS

Investigating Key Elements of Peer Support Programs Focused on Recovery and Reentry in Community-Based Organizations: A Qualitative Implementation Science Study.

BACKGROUND: Peer support programs are recognized as an evidence-based practice to effectively support individuals in recovery from substance use and reduce recidivism. Peer support is provided by trained individuals with lived experience who guide individuals navigating similar life challenges. Organizations design and structure peer support programs differently; some have developed unique approaches to meet the needs of the individuals they serve. This study provides guidance for implementing peer support programs within community based organizations with a focus on recovery or reentry after

Randomised pragmatic waitlist trial with process evaluation investigating the effectiveness of peer support after brain injury: protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an important global health problem. Formal service provision fails to address the ongoing needs of people with TBI and their family in the context of a social and relational process of learning to live with and adapt to life after TBI. Our feasibility study reported peer support after TBI is acceptable to both mentors and mentees with reported benefits indicating a high potential for effectiveness and likelihood of improving outcomes for both mentees and their mentors. OBJECTIVES: To (a) test the effectiveness of a peer support intervention for im
