Arsenic-induced inflammation in workers.

Occupational and environmental exposures to metal and metalloids can result in neurotoxicity and immunotoxicity. Selenium (Se) is essential for the proper functioning of neutrophils, macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, T-lymphocytes and other immune mechanisms, while zinc (Zn) is a trace element essential for basic cell activities, including cell growth and differentiation. Arsenic (As) may lead to different types of immunosuppressive effects. This study consisted of 62 male workers, who had been exposed to arsenic for different durations and 73 non-exposed male workers (control group) wit

Case Report: Acne related to electric welding, a new type of occupational acne.

Occupational dermatoses constitute a significant proportion of occupational diseases, among which occupational acne can cause irreversible scarring and immense psychological distress in affected workers due to its disfiguring nature. Early recognition of suspected ocupational skin diseases is crucial for effective prevention and treatment. Electric welding exposes workers to a complex mixture of metal fumes, ultraviolet radiation, heat and other potential occupational hazards that may contribute to acne development. Here, we report two cases of persistent nodular acne linked to electric weldin

The risk factors for occupational contact dermatitis among workers in a medium density fiberboard furniture factory in Eastern Thailand.

The aim of this study was to determine the occupational exposure to formaldehyde on the medium-density fiberboard (MDF) dust and allergic contact dermatitis among the workers at a furniture factory. Data were collected from 439 subjects using questionnaires and patch testing to evaluate allergic contact dermatitis resulting from formaldehyde on wood dust exposure in the workplace. The geometric mean concentration of formaldehyde on MDF dust that the workers in the production department were exposed to was 2.07 ppm (GSD 4.54). Patch test results revealed that some subjects developed allergy to

Chronic beryllium disease in a precious metal refinery. Clinical epidemiologic and immunologic evidence for continuing risk from exposure to low level beryllium fume.

Five workers at a precious metal refinery developed granulomatous lung disease between 1972 and 1985. The original diagnosis was sarcoidosis, but 4 of the workers were subsequently proved to have hypersensitivity to beryllium by in vitro proliferative responses of lymphocytes obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage. Review of medical records of coworkers and extensive industrial hygiene surveillance of the plant demonstrated that 4 cases occurred in the furnace area where air concentrations of beryllium fume were consistently below the permissible exposure limit of 2 micrograms/M3. A single case ha

Occupational exposure to chlorinated organic solvents and its effect on the renal excretion of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase.

Organic chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents are known to be nephrotoxic. However, very little is known about renal integrity after occupational exposure to these solvents. Increased urinary N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) excretion caused by necrosis of renal tubular cells can be used as a marker for nephropathy. In this study trichloroethylene (TRI), trichloroethane and freon 113 exposed persons from metal industries have been clinically investigated, and urine samples analysed for NAG activity and for trichloroacetic acid concentration. In order to analyse for possible subclinical kidney

Upper airway problems in industrial workers exposed to oil mist.

Exposure to oil mist used in metal work sometimes gives symptoms from skin and airways. This study was performed to evaluate histological and functional respiratory tract disorders. Six male lathe workers aged 31-64 years exposed to oil mist for 4-29 years were examined and compared with matched controls. The investigation included case history, ENT examination, nasal mucociliary function, routine blood tests, IgE, RAST, X-ray of sinus and lungs and biopsy of the nasal mucosa. The mucociliary test showed no difference between the groups. However, all 6 exposed workers had pathological histolog

Increased mortality in COPD among construction workers exposed to inorganic dust.

The aim of this study was to find out if occupational exposure to dust, fumes or gases, especially among never-smokers, increased the mortality from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A cohort of 317,629 Swedish male construction workers was followed from 1971 to 1999. Exposure to inorganic dust (asbestos, man-made mineral fibres, dust from cement, concrete and quartz), gases and irritants (epoxy resins, isocyanates and organic solvents), fumes (asphalt fumes, diesel exhaust and metal fumes), and wood dust was based on a job-exposure matrix. An internal control group with "unexposed

Kienböck's disease. I. Anatomy and Etiology.

Cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) pose a major industrial problem in terms of increased medical costs, lost productivity and degraded worker health and safety. From an anatomical view, CTD's are classified into three major categories: tendon disorders, neurovascular disorders and nerve disorders. Up until recently these categories seemed to cover CTD of the upper extremity, however, Kienböck's disease, a typically less common disease and one that does not fit into the established CTD categories, has been observed to exhibit CTD characteristics and does appear in the manufacturing environment.

Biochemical indicators of metabolic poisoning associated with lead based occupations in nutritionally disadvantaged communities.

The biochemical alterations that occur in chronic lead exposure were studied in 86 males who were occupationally exposed to the metal. The biochemical indices investigated were blood lead, total and ionized calcium, inorganic phosphate, total protein and albumin, uric acid and 1,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25] (OH2 D3]. Serum total and ionized calcium levels and 1,25 [OH2] D3 were significantly lower in lead workers than in the control population (P < 0.01 and P < 0.001, respectively). Multiple regression analysis showed an important relationship between blood lead and serum calcium. Uric a

Inhalation carcinogenicity study with nickel metal powder in Wistar rats.

Epidemiological studies of nickel refinery workers have demonstrated an association between increased respiratory cancer risk and exposure to certain nickel compounds (later confirmed in animal studies). However, the lack of an association found in epidemiological analyses for nickel metal remained unconfirmed for lack of robust animal inhalation studies. In the present study, Wistar rats were exposed by whole-body inhalation to 0, 0.1, 0.4, and 1.0 mg Ni/m(3) nickel metal powder (MMAD=1.8 microm, GSD=2.4 microm) for 6 h/day, 5 days/week for up to 24 months. Work-Related Eye Injuries: A Relevant Health Problem. Main Epidemiological Data from a Highly-Industrialized Area of Northern Italy.

The province of Modena is one of the most industrialized areas of Northern Italy. The medical records of the Ophthalmological Emergency Department (OED) of Modena University Hospital were studied: there were 13,470 OED accesses in 2014 and in 754 cases that an occupational eye injury occurred. The frequency of work-related eye injuries (3‰) was lower compared to other published studies, but the absolute number is still relevant, showing the need for more adequate prevention, especially in metal work, construction work, and agriculture, where the worst prognoses were observed. Intervention prog

Chemical Pneumonitis Caused by the Inhalation of Zinc Oxide Fumes in an Arc Welder.

Acute respiratory illness caused by exposure to welding-associated zinc oxide fumes is known as metal fume fever (MFF). MFF is generally characterized as a self-limiting disease. Few studies have reported chemical pneumonitis associated with zinc fume inhalation. We report a case study involving severe episodes of MFF accompanied by chemical pneumonitis due to the inhalation of zinc oxide fumes while operating an arc welder. A 54-year-old man developed flu-like symptoms after arc welding galvanized steel in a poorly ventilated area. Despite intravenous antibiotics therapy, his clinical course

[Reflections and prospects on the health risks posed by heavy metals and their new materials].

Occupational heavy metal exposure has become a critical issue in China's high-quality economic development within the field of occupational health. Current occupational exposure now extends beyond traditional contaminants like lead and mercury to include emerging materials such as rare earth elements, forming a dual pollution pattern that combines both conventional and novel pollutants. These substances can damage multiple bodily systems including the nervous and respiratory systems, imposing significant disease burdens on working populations. This paper examines the mechanisms of traditional
