The effect of colchicine on micronutrients in children with newly diagnosed familial Mediterranean fever.

OBJECTIVES: Colchicine is an essential component of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) treatment. It is suggested that it may affect vitamin B12 levels by affecting intestinal absorption. This research focused on examining the impact of colchicine therapy on anemia parameters, as well as levels of vitamin B12 and folate in patients who have recently been diagnosed with FMF. METHOD: This prospective cohort investigation assessed children diagnosed with FMF between October 2016 and February 2017, evaluating anemia parameters as well as vitamin B12 and folate levels at baseline and at the third

Enhanced intestinal absorption of micronutrients in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats maintained on zinc supplementation.

In view of the deficiency of zinc concomitant with other minerals in diabetic condition, it is desirable to increase the absorption capability of the same by improving the intestinal health. In continuation of our previous report on the virtue of zinc supplementation on diabetic complications, and a significant favourable consequence in the restoration of the compromised structural integrity of small intestines in diabetic situation, it would be relevant to examine the permeability characteristics of the intestines. Groups of hyperglycemic rats were treated for six weeks with supplemental zinc

Nutritional Immunity and Fungal Pathogenesis: The Struggle for Micronutrients at the Host-Pathogen Interface.

All living organisms require certain micronutrients such as iron, zinc, manganese and copper for cellular function and growth. For human pathogens however, the maintenance of metal ion homeostasis is particularly challenging. This is because the mammalian host actively enforces extremes of micronutrient availability on potential microbial invaders-processes collectively termed nutritional immunity. The role of iron sequestration in controlling microbial infections is well established and, more recently, the importance of other metals including zinc, manganese and copper has been recognised. In…

Reciprocal cooperation of phytochemicals and micronutrients against typical and atypical forms of Borrelia sp.

AIMS: Borrelia sp., a causative pathogenic factor of Lyme disease (LD), has become a major public health threat. Current treatments based on antibiotics often lead to relapse after their withdrawal. Naturally derived substances that could work synergistically to display higher efficacy compared with the individual components may serve as a resource for the development of novel approaches to combat both active and latent forms of Borrelia sp. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using checkerboard assay, we investigated the anti-borreliae reciprocal cooperation of phytochemicals and micronutrients against two…

Micronutrients in Future Diets: Considerations for Dietary Iron and the Food Matrix Effects on Bioavailability.

Adequate nutrition is an essential contributor to improved health, longevity, and quality of life in the population. The shift toward sustainable, plant-based diets is driving trends for the development and adaptation of more plant-based food ingredients in future diets. With this, nutrient bioavailability, particularly of iron, remains a critical consideration. Iron deficiency remains a global public health challenge, particularly amongst women, pregnant women, and young children. One major contributor to iron deficiency is inadequate dietary iron intakes, but there are other factors that hin

Exploring vitamin K2 and B12 as bioactive micronutrients for dentin conditioning in regenerative endodontics procedures.

This study assessed the potential of vitamins K2 and B12 as dentin surface conditioners to modulate the regenerative behavior of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs). hPDLSCs were isolated and characterized by flow cytometry, which confirmed the mesenchymal stem cell phenotype. Cell viability assays showed no cytotoxicity at the tested concentrations; therefore, 16 µg/mL was selected for further analysis. Both vitamins significantly enhanced cell migration, attachment to dentin disks, and mineralization potential, as demonstrated by Alizarin Red staining and alkaline phosphatase act

Food Matrix Effects on Plant-Derived Bioactive Compounds and Micronutrients: Implications for Functional Food Development.

Even though the functional food market has rapidly increased in recent years, the links between bioactive-rich formulations and consumers' health benefit are not fully established, mainly because of insufficient consideration of food matrix effects. This review provides a comprehensive and integrated evaluation of how food matrix properties (structural and physicochemical) affect the bioaccessibility of plant bioactive compounds. Unlike many reviews that focus on a single nutrient approach, we highlight quantitative evidence of how bioaccessibility can be affected by matrix properties, illustr
