How Alcohol Damages Brain Development in Children.

The world over, people drink in order to socialize, celebrate, and relax, despite the negative health effects of alcohol. Three periods of dynamic brain changes are evidenced to be particularly sensitive to the harmful effects of alcohol: gestation (from conception to birth), later adolescence (15-19 years), and older adulthood (over 65 years). This article is concentrated only on the negative effects of alcohol in children who have been exposed to alcohol before birth, known as foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). This is a review based on published data in PubMed over the last two decades and is a

Living-donor liver transplantation in Budd-Chiari syndrome with inferior vena cava complete thrombosis: A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a challenging indication for liver transplantation (LT) due to a combination of massive liver, increased bleeding, retroperitoneal fibrosis and frequently presents with stenosis of the inferior vena cava (IVC). Occasionally, it may be totally thrombosed, increasing the complexity of the procedure, as it should also be resected. The challenge is even greater when performing living-donor LT as the graft does not contain the retrohepatic IVC; thus, it may be necessary to reconstruct it. CASE SUMMARY: A 35-year-old male patient with liver cirrhosis due to

Combined Emphysema and Interstitial Lung Disease as a Rare Presentation of Pulmonary Involvement in a Patient with Chronic Visceral Acid Sphingomyelinase Deficiency (Niemann-Pick Disease Type B).

BACKGROUND Niemann-Pick disease is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase 1 gene. It results in acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD) and sphingomyelin intracellular accumulation. Lung disease is diagnosed mostly in chronic visceral ASMD. Ground-glass opacities and smooth interlobular septal thickening are described most frequently. They are localized predominantly in the lower parts of both lungs. CASE REPORT The authors describe a rare type of lung involvement, composed of emphysema and interstitial lung disease (ILD), in a nonsmoking adult male with

[Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome with Cortical Subarachnoid Hemorrhage due to Acute Cortical Infarction Beneath the Sulcus:A Case Report].

We report a rare case of reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome(RCVS)with cortical subarachnoid hemorrhage(cSAH)associated with a fresh cortical infarction beneath the sulcus with thick cSAH. A 34-year-old woman presented with history of thunderclap headache. She was transferred to our hospital for further examination of a cSAH in the left frontal lobe. Results of the cerebrospinal fluid examination were unremarkable, but three-dimensional rotational angiography revealed multiple instances of narrowing of the cortical branches of the anterior and middle cerebral arteries, suggesting the

Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome After Heart Transplantation: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) is a transient cerebrovascular disorder putatively caused by some immunosuppressive agents. CASE REPORT: We recently encountered a 47-year-old female patient diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy who developed RCVS after heart transplantation. A triple-drug regimen consisting of tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and a corticosteroid was started after surgery. On postoperative day (POD) 11, the patient developed a severe headache, although computed tomography of the head demonstrated no signs of hemorrhage or infarction. At firs

Autopsy of a patient with Cushing's Syndrome who was revealed to have pulmonary tumorlets producing ectopic ACTH.

The patient, a 78-year-old female with a 10-year history of type 2 diabetes mellitus, was admitted to our department for evaluation of leg edema and general fatigue. Biochemical investigations revealed hypokalemia and elevated serum cortisol and plasma ACTH levels, with a loss of diurnal rhythm and failure of suppression at high doses (8 mg) of dexamethasone. No pituitary tumor or parasellar tumor was detected by contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance image scan of the pituitary. High resolution CT of the lung and bronchoscopic examination revealed no abnormalities. A

[Frontal pseudoataxia, discussion on its mechanism (author's transl)].

We presented a rare care who had right frontal lobe infarction, with left side pseudoataxia, and the mechanism, causing pseudoataxia, was considered. The patient, a 51 year-old, righ-handed male, was admitted on August 9, 1980, complaining of left-side pseudoataxia. About p.m. 7:00, July 29, 1980, he suddenly noticed numbness of the left foot, and he found himself difficulty in standing in the next morning. He had a mild paresis and tactile-tactile of the left side including the face, which was rapidly improved. However, there was pseudoataxia of the left extremities, which had not been improv

Case Report: First pulmonary infection caused by Mycobacterium colombiense in a non-immunosuppressed host with bronchiectasis: diagnosis facilitated by synergistic mNGS and culture.

Mycobacterium colombiense, a rare slow-growing mycobacterium within the Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), causes disseminated disease almost exclusively in immunocompromised hosts, with no prior reports of localized pulmonary infection in non-immunosuppressed individuals. A 47-year-old non-immunosuppressed male with bronchiectasis presented with progressive cough, night sweats, and fatigue. Computed tomography (CT) revealed bronchiectasis with nodules in the right middle and lower lobes. Empirical β-lactam therapy failed, and conventional bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) tests (smears, cul

Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome: A Clinico-Radiological Approach.

Introduction Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a self-limiting neurological condition usually seen in young to middle-aged adults. Although most cases occur in the context of hypertension, PRES is not uncommon in normotensives. PRES is a clinico-radiological diagnosis that embodies specific clinical features, risk factors, and imaging findings. This study analyzes the clinico-radiological profile, typical and atypical features, and outcomes of patients presenting with PRES. Methodology This prospective observational study spanned 18 months and included 38 patients with sus

The association of RAB18 gene polymorphism (rs3765133) with cerebellar volume in healthy adults.

Genetic factors are responsible for the development of the human brain. Certain genetic factors are known to increase the risk of common brain disorders and affect the brain structure. Therefore, even in healthy people, these factors have a role in the development of specific brain regions. Loss-of-function mutations in the RAB18 gene (RAB18) cause Warburg Micro syndrome, which is associated with reduced brain size and deformed brain structures. In this study, we hypothesized that the RAB18 variant might influence regional brain volumes in healthy people. The study participants comprised 246 n

Mannheimia haemolytica isogenic capsular and LPS-sialylation gene deletion mutants are attenuated in a calf lung challenge model.

Bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) is a multifactorial syndrome that involves complex interactions between environment, bacterial/viral pathogens, and the host. Mannheimia haemolytica is the most significant bacterial pathogen associated with BRDC. This study investigated the virulence of a M. haemolytica serotype 1 capsular-deficient (Δcap) mutant and a M. haemolytica lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-sialylation-deficient (ΔneuA, cytidine monophosphate-sialic acid synthetase) mutant in a calf lung challenge model. Twelve colostrum-deprived calves were divided into three groups (four calves per

A case of recurrent depressive disorder presenting with Alice in Wonderland syndrome: psychopathology and pre- and post-treatment FDG-PET findings.

BACKGROUND: Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a rare neuropsychiatric syndrome that typically manifests in distortion of extrapersonal visual image, altered perception of one's body image, and a disturbed sense of the passage of distance and time. Several conditions have been reported to contribute to AIWS, although its biological basis is still unknown. Here, we present the first case demonstrating a clear concurrence of recurrent depressive disorder and AIWS. The clinical manifestations and pre- and post-treatment fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomographic (FDG-PET) images provide

Neuronal representation of object orientation.

The dissociation between object identity and object orientation observed in six patients with brain damage, has been taken as evidence for a view-invariant model of object recognition. However, there was also some indication that these patients were not generally agnosic for object orientation but were able to gain access to at least some information about objects' canonical upright. We studied a new case (KB) with spared knowledge of object identity and impaired perception of object orientation using a forced choice paradigm to contrast directly the patient's ability to perceive objects' cano

Characterising the brain metalloproteome in Down syndrome patients with concomitant Alzheimer's pathology.

Down syndrome (DS) is a common intellectual disability, with an incidence of 1 in 700 and is caused by trisomy 21. People with DS develop Alzheimer's disease (AD)-like neuropathology by the age of 40. As metal ion dyshomeostasis (particularly zinc, iron and copper) is one of the characteristics of AD and is believed to be involved in the pathogenesis of disease, we reasoned that it may also be altered in DS. Thus, we used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to examine metal levels in post-mortem brain tissue from DS individuals with concomitant AD pathology. Size exclusion-ICPMS was a
