Bone mineral density and pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted physical health, including bone mineral density (BMD). This review aims to explore the effects of various pandemic-related factors such as reduced physical activity, stress, depression, dietary changes, and SARS-CoV-2 infection on BMD. Methods involved analyzing studies that investigate the impact of these factors on bone health, including observational studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Results show that decreased physical activity, depression, and changes in diet lead to a reduction in BMD, particularly in the lumbar spine and fem

Curved mineral platelets in bone.

Bone is a composite material principally made up of a mineral phase (apatite) and collagen fibrils. The mineral component of bone occurs in the form of polycrystalline platelets 2-6 nm in thickness. These platelets are packed and probably glued together in stacks of two or more, ranging up to >30 platelets. Here we show that most of these stacks are curved flat sheets whose cylindrical axes are oriented parallel to the long axes of collagen fibrils. Consequently, the curvature of the platelets is not detectable in TEM sections cut parallel to the collagen fibril axes. The radius of curvature a

Bone Mineral Density in the Scaphoid.

Introduction: The scaphoid bone is essential for wrist stability and movement. While fractures commonly occur at the scaphoid's waist, those at the proximal pole, though rarer, tend to result in nonunion, potentially linked to variations in bone mineral density (BMD). Previous studies have shown an increase in BMD at the proximal pole in fractured scaphoids, but BMD distribution in intact scaphoids has not been well studied. This study aims to map the BMD distribution of the intact scaphoid to better understand the etiology of fractures and optimize treatment approaches. Methods: Conducted und

Calcium Carbonate Mineralization of Microalgae.

Biological substrates catalyze the nucleation and growth of sparingly soluble salts however, the underlying mechanism is largely unknown. In the present study, the growth of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), on Acutodesmus obliquus (AO) microalgae was investigated. The test microalgae favored the growth of CaCO3 from solutions supersaturated with respect to calcite (7.94 < SRcalcite < 104.71). The precipitation of calcite on AO was not preceded by measurable induction times, and the rates of calcite crystal growth were higher for higher microalgae cell concentrations. The presence of the microalgae c

[Mineral dysmetabolism in corneal diseases].

Functional status and biological properties of connective tissues significantly depend on the mineral elements involved in their metabolism. Connective tissue portion of the corneal stroma makes up most of its thickness; pathological changes in collagen fibers and the stroma can cause a range of corneal diseases, some of which are specifically associated with disorders of mineral metabolism. The article considers impairments of mineral metabolism as possible pathophysiological mechanisms in certain diseases and disorders of the cornea, and describes in detail the abnormalities associated with

Endocrinology of bone mineralization: An update.

Throughout the world, millions of people suffer from fragilizing osteopathies such as osteomalacia and osteoporosis. Osteomalacia is a rare disorder, corresponding to mineralization abnormalities in adult bone, as opposed to rickets in children. Renal phosphate loss and hypophosphatasia are the main causes of vitamin-resistant osteomalacia. Diagnosis is based on clinical history, phosphocalcic metabolism assessment and, if necessary, molecular characterization, and must be rapid in order to initiate the most appropriate treatment and consider new treatments such as burosumab if necessary. Oste

Pathological Mineralization: The Potential of Mineralomics.

Pathological mineralization has been reported countless times in the literature and is a well-known phenomenon in the medical field for its connections to a wide range of diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases. The minerals involved in calcification, however, have not been directly studied as extensively as the organic components of each of the pathologies. These have been studied in isolation and, for most of them, physicochemical properties are hitherto not fully known. In a parallel development, materials science methods such as electron microscopy, spect…

Dysregulated Mineral Metabolism in AKI.

Dysregulated mineral metabolism is a nearly universal sequalae of acute kidney injury (AKI). Abnormalities in circulating mineral metabolites observed in patients with AKI include hypocalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, hyperphosphatemia, decreased vitamin D metabolite levels, and increased fibroblast growth factor 23 levels. We review the pathophysiology of dysregulated mineral metabolism in AKI with a focus on calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone, and vitamin D metabolites. We discuss how mineral metabolite levels can serve as novel prognostic markers for incident AKI and other related outcome

Mineralized tissues in hypophosphatemic rickets.

Hypophosphatemic rickets is caused by renal phosphate wasting that is most commonly due to X-linked dominant mutations in PHEX. PHEX mutations cause hypophosphatemia indirectly, through the increased expression of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) by osteocytes. FGF23 decreases renal phosphate reabsorption and thereby increases phosphate excretion. The lack of phosphate leads to a mineralization defect at the level of growth plates (rickets), bone tissue (osteomalacia), and teeth, where the defect facilitates the formation of abscesses. The bone tissue immediately adjacent to osteocytes ofte

[Hyperprolactinaemia and bone mineral density].

Hyperprolactinaemia is one of the most common endocrinological disorder at women at the reproductive age. Prolactin is produced by the anterior lobe of the pituitary. The main role of prolactin is associated with mamotrophic action and lactogenesis. Hyperprolactinaemia causes several symptoms such as menstrual disorders, infertility, decrease of sexual function, galactorrhea in women and gynecomasty, impotence and decrease of semen quality in men. Recent studies have presented prolactin as a homone involved in many metabolic processes. Long-term consequences of high prolactin serum concentratio

Dietary mineral supplies in Africa.

Dietary micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs) are widespread, yet their prevalence can be difficult to assess. Here, we estimate MND risks due to inadequate intakes for seven minerals in Africa using food supply and composition data, and consider the potential of food-based and agricultural interventions. Food Balance Sheets (FBSs) for 46 countries were integrated with food composition data to estimate per capita supply of calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), iodine (I), magnesium (Mg), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn), and also phytate. Deficiency risks were quantified using an estimated average requ…

Bone mineralization in celiac disease.

Evidence indicates a well-established relationship between low bone mineral density (BMD) and celiac disease (CD), but data on the pathogenesis of bone derangement in this setting are still inconclusive. In patients with symptomatic CD, low BMD appears to be directly related to the intestinal malabsorption. Adherence to a strict gluten-free diet (GFD) will reverse the histological changes in the intestine and also the biochemical evidence of calcium malabsorption, resulting in rapid increase of BMD. Nevertheless, GFD improves BMD but does not normalize it in all patients, even after the recove

[Experimental advances in mineral metabolism].

One of the most important problems faced by nephrologists is the high degree of cardiovascular mortality in patients on dialysis. This increase in cardiovascular disease has been associated with various factors, but, among them, hyperphosphatemia stands out particularly. The serum phosphate levels considered normal in these patients have gradually decreased in recent years. Therefore, phosphate control in the chronic kidney disease patient has become a challenge that has stimulated basic research in recent years. The aim of the following review is to bring together the most novel results prese

[Bone remodeling and mineral homeostasis].

The discovery of receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB ligand (RANKL) elucidates the mechanism of osteoclast differentiation and function regulated by osteoblasts. Osteoprotegerin (OPG), a soluble decoy receptor of RANKL, inhibits both differentiation and function of osteoclasts. OPG-deficient (OPG-/-) mice exhibited severe osteoporosis caused by enhanced osteoclastic bone resorption. Deficiency of OPG in human has been shown to result in juvenile Paget's disease. Blood alkaline phosphatase activity of OPG-/- mice was about four times as high as that of wild-type mice. These results sugg

Aortic and cardiac mineralization in the dog.

Aortic and cardiac mineralization was found in 21 of 3443 (0.61%) canine thoracic radiographs. In none of 786 feline thoracic radiographs reviewed were such lesions present. Mineralizations were superimposed on the ascending aorta (19 dogs) or on the caudal cardiac silhouette (2 dogs). In 2 of 4 dogs mineralization was identified echocardiographically dorsal to the aortic valve in close proximity to coronary arteries. Computed tomography confirmed mineralization of the aortic arch and root in 2 of 2 dogs. Necropsy and histopathologic examination in 1 dog revealed multiple nodular aortic tunica

Mineralized corneal sequestrum in a cat.

An 8-month-old 3-kg (6.6-lb) sexually intact male cat was evaluated for chronic refractory keratitis and a corneal plaque that developed after treatment with a corticosteroid-containing ophthalmic preparation. Pertinent ophthalmic findings included blepharospasm, conjunctivitis, corneal vascularization, and a tan raised corneal plaque with a dense and gritty composition. Lamellar keratectomy was performed to excise the plaque. The cornea healed with mild scarring. Histologic examination revealed extensive coagulation necrosis and mineralization of the corneal stroma with increased inflammatory

Matrix proteins and mineralization: an overview.

There is a wealth of information on the mineral and matrix components in bones and teeth, in the exoskeletons of invertebrates, and in dystrophic calcific deposits. This information includes detailed characterization of their physical and chemical composition and details on the gene localization and regulation of gene expression for the major and minor protein constituents. The reason that mineral deposition occurs in some tissues and not in others remains unclear. In this review, studies in solution, cell culture studies, and investigations in mutant animals will be surveyed to indicate which
