The ethnic gap in mobility: a comparison of Russian, Somali and Kurdish origin migrants and the general Finnish population.

BACKGROUND: Many ethnic minority populations have poorer health than the general population. However, there is limited knowledge on the possible ethnic gap in physical mobility. We aim to examine the prevalence of mobility limitations in working-age Russian, Somali and Kurdish origin migrants in comparison to the general population in Finland. We also determine whether the association between ethnic group and mobility limitation remains after taking into account socio-economic and health-related factors. METHODS: We used data from the Finnish Migrant Health and Wellbeing Study (Maamu) and the…

Enhancing Covid-19 virus spread modeling using an activity travel model.

Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) and its variants are still spreading rapidly with deadly consequences and profound impacts on the global health … eading. A major limitation of this model in relation to modeling the spreading of COVID-19, and the mobility limitation strategy, is that the SIR model does not include mobility or take into account changes in mobility within its structure. This paper develops and tests a new hybrid SIR model; SIR-M which is integrated with an urban activity travel model to explore h …

Self-reported Sitting Time is Associated With Decreased Mobility in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Prolonged sitting is associated with increased risk of sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults and can lead to poor muscle function, limited balance and transfer abilities, and mobility limitations. Sitting time can be a modifiable factor in preserving independent mobility in older adults. Assessing sitting time is an important measure for preventive medicine in older populations. The purposes of this study were to examine the test-retest reliability of older adults' reported (using a recall strategy) sitting time and to determine its association with mobility lim…

eTest: a limited-interaction, longitudinal randomized controlled trial of a mobile health platform that enables real-time phone counseling after HIV self-testing among high-risk men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: HIV disproportionately affects men who have sex with men (MSM) in the USA, and new infections continue to increase, particularly among African American (AA) and Hispanic/Latino (H/L) MSM. Rates of HIV testing are particularly low among AA and H/L MSM, and innovative approaches to encourage testing may help address high incidence in these men. HIV self-testing (HST) may be an important tool for increasing rates and frequency of testing. HST may be particularly well-suited for AA and H/L MSM, given that stigma and mistrust of medical care contribute to low testing rates. Despite its

Race differences in mobility status among prostate cancer survivors: The role of socioeconomic status.

The objective of this paper was to determine whether there were any race differences in mobility limitation among PCa survivors, and understand the impact of socioeconomic status (SES) on this relationship. Data consisted of 661 PCa survivors (296 Black and 365 White) from the Diagnosis and Decisions in Prostate Cancer Treatment Outcomes (DAD) Study. Mobility limitation was defined as PCa survivors who reported difficulty walking a quarter mile or up 1 flight of stairs. Race was based on the PCa survivors self-identification of either White or Black. SES consisted of education level (i.e., les…

Dietary patterns and risk of self-reported activity limitation in older adults from the Three-City Bordeaux Study.

Few studies have been interested in the relationship between dietary patterns and activity limitation in older adults yet. We analysed the association between dietary patterns and the risk of self-reported activity limitation - that is mobility restriction, limitation in instrumental activities in daily living (IADL) and in activities in daily living (ADL) - in community-dwellers aged 67+ years initially free of activity limitation in 2001-2002 and re-examined at least once over 10 years - that is 583 participants for mobility restriction, 1114 for IADL limitation and 1267 for ADL limitation.

"Taking a Turn for the Better": Does Self-reported Recovery From Walking Limitation Improve Disability and Mortality Outcomes?

OBJECTIVES: Recovery from self-reported walking limitation may be a turning point in an individual's health trajectory and may lead to better physical and mental health in the future. This research examines whether recovery from walking limitation is associated with onset of mobility disability, activities of daily living (ADLs) disability, or mortality among a national sample of older Americans. DATA AND METHODS: Using Waves 4 through 11 (1998-2012) of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), discrete-time event history models (N = 12,579 person-intervals) with multiple competing events were e

The Association Between Walking Speed and Bone Turnover Markers in Older Adults.

Background  Previous research conducted among institutionalized older adults has reported increased bone turnover markers (BTMs) in those subjects with mobility limitation. However, the association between walking speed and bone metabolism has not been well described in community-dwelling older adults. Methods The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2000 and 2001-2002 cycles were used to determine the association between the 20-feet walking speed test and bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP) and the cross-linked N-telopeptides of type I bone collagen (NTx). Sex-specific general li…

Estimating cutpoints of gait speed and sit-to-stand test values for self-reported mobility limitations in a cohort of community-dwelling older adults from Singapore: comparing receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis with adjusted predictive modelling.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical interpretability of the gait speed and 5-times sit-to-stand (5-STS) tests is commonly established by comparing older adults with and without self-reported mobility limitations (SRML) on gait speed and 5-STS performance, and estimating clinical cutpoints for SRML using the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) method. Accumulating evidence, however, suggests that the adjusted predictive modeling (APM) method may be more appropriate to estimate these interpretational cutpoints. Thus, we aimed to compare, in community-dwelling older adults, gait speed and 5-STS cutpoints e…

Impaired hospitalized patient mobility is associated with nurse injuries.

BACKGROUND: Staff injuries adversely affect the health of staff members as well the ability of health care teams to effectively care for patients. Identifying patients who pose an increased risk of injury may allow for the planning of risk mitigation strategies, but few studies have examined patient factors associated with staff injury risk. AIMS: Examine the relationship between staff injury and patient mobility, which has been linked to other key hospital outcomes. METHODS: Linking occupational health and electronic medical record data, we examined documented patient mobility levels, based

Long term determinants of functional decline of mobility: an 11-year follow-up of 5464 adults of late middle aged and elderly.

This confirmatory study aims at investigating the long term determinants of mobility limitation among late middle aged and elderly in a physically less active population. Five thousand four hundred and sixty-four participants aged 50-97 in 1996 enrolled the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging (TLSA) for four waves of interview during 11 years. Social and health-related determinants were collected in each interview. Mobility limitation was enquired level of difficulty in eight movement tasks, including lifting 11kg weight, squatting, running 20-30m, standing for 15min, walking 200-300m, climbing…
