Individual differences in boys' and girls' timing and tempo of puberty: modeling development with nonlinear growth models.

Pubertal development is a nonlinear process progressing from prepubescent beginnings through biological, physical, and psychological changes to full sexual maturity. To tether theoretical concepts of puberty with sophisticated longitudinal, analytical models capable of articulating pubertal development more accurately, we used nonlinear mixed-effects models to describe both the timing and tempo of pubertal development in the sample of 364 White boys and 373 White girls measured across 6 years as part of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and

Examining Stepped Care as an Innovation in the Delivery of Psychological Treatments for Bipolar Disorder: Perspectives From Members of the International Society of Bipolar Disorders Psychological Interventions Task Force.

BACKGROUND: Research demonstrates the effectiveness of evidence-based psychological treatment adjunctive to pharmacotherapy for reducing mood symptoms in bipolar disorder. However, access to these treatments is limited, and innovative strategies are needed to ensure that more patients with bipolar disorder receive the gold-standard treatments that may help them achieve wellness. "Stepped care" models of psychological service delivery represent one potential solution to this problem of treatment access. Under a stepped care model, patients are assigned the minimum necessary psychological treatm

The Association Between Psychological Flexibility and Mindfulness: A Meta-Analytic Review.

Psychological flexibility and mindfulness are core constructs in contemporary models of adaptive functioning and clinical intervention. Although these constructs are conceptually linked, the empirical strength and consistency of their association remain unclear. This study presents the first meta-analytic review examining the correlation between psychological flexibility and mindfulness across published studies. A systematic literature search identified 45 eligible studies comprising a total of 16,316 participants. Effect sizes were calculated as Pearson's r and transformed into Fisher's z for

Identifying the predictors of severe psychological distress by auto-machine learning methods.

Social stress in daily life and the COVID-19 pandemic have greatly impacted the mental health of the population. Early detection of a predisposition to severe psychological distress is essential for timely interventions. This paper analyzed 4036 samples participating in the 2019-2020 National Health Information Trends Survey (HINTS) and identified 57 candidate predictors of severe psychological distress based on univariate chi-square and t-test analyses. Five machine learning methods, namely logistic regression (LR), automatic generalized linear models (Auto-GLM), automatic random forests (Aut

Forgiveness takes place on an attitudinal continuum from hostility to friendliness: Toward a closer union of forgiveness theory and measurement.

Researchers commonly conceptualize forgiveness as a rich complex of psychological changes involving attitudes, emotions, and behaviors. Psychometric work with the measures developed to capture this conceptual richness, however, often points to a simpler picture of the psychological dimensions in which forgiveness takes place. In an effort to better unite forgiveness theory and measurement, we evaluate several psychometric models for common measures of forgiveness. In doing so, we study people from the United States and Japan to understand forgiveness in both nonclose and close relationships. I

Functional neurological disorders: misunderstanding "Dualism".

Psychological and psychiatric explanations for Functional Neurological Disorders (FND) are routinely dismissed as embodying "dualism" or "mind-body dualism", strongly implying that any notion of psychogenicity should be rejected outright. This reflects a widespread misunderstanding. DSM5 nomenclature and recent mainstream literature emphasise neurobiological causation - framing FND as a "multi-network brain disorder" or "dysregulation of neural circuitry" - while downplaying psychological formulations, despite high rates of psychiatric symptomatology and the fact that the majority of clinician

Psychological flexibility and resilience in dizziness-related disability: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Dizziness is a highly prevalent and often disabling complaint that cannot always be explained by peripheral vestibular pathology alone. Psychological factors, particularly psychological flexibility and resilience, may play an important role in shaping symptom severity and disability, yet their combined contribution remains insufficiently explored. This study aimed to examine how psychological flexibility and resilience contribute to the clinical expression of dizziness-related disability. METHODS: Ninety-eight patients with dizziness (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, persiste

Pulmonary Symptoms and Psychological Distress as Correlates and Mediators of Quality of Life in Lung Transplant Recipients: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Lung transplant recipients often live for years with residual respiratory symptoms and psychological distress, but the pathways through which these factors affect quality of life (QoL) are not fully understood. We examined how transplant-specific pulmonary symptom burden and psychological distress relate to generic and transplant-specific QoL in long-term lung transplant recipients. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 76 adult lung transplant recipients from a single center completed the Lung Transplant Quality of Life (LT-QoL) questionnaire, EQ-5D-5L, SF-36, St George's Respir

Residential greenness, air pollution and psychological well-being among urban residents in Guangzhou, China.

China's rapid urbanization has led to an increasing level of exposure to air pollution and a decreasing level of exposure to vegetation among urban populations. Both trends may pose threats to psychological well-being. Previous studies on the interrelationships among greenness, air pollution and psychological well-being rely on exposure measures from remote sensing data, which may fail to accurately capture how people perceive vegetation on the ground. To address this research gap, this study aimed to explore relationships among neighbourhood greenness, air pollution exposure and psychological

AI-assisted and Big-Unit teaching enhance speed-skating performance through psychological mechanisms in adolescents: evidence from a three-arm intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Innovative instructional approaches are increasingly advocated in physical education to enhance both motor skill development and psychological adaptation. However, few studies have directly compared micro-level (AI-assisted) and macro-level (Big-Unit) teaching models, or examined the psychological mechanisms underlying performance improvements in adolescent winter-sport environments. METHODS: A three-arm, quasi-experimental longitudinal study was conducted with 129 first-year middle school students (AI-assisted: n = 42; Big-Unit: n = 43; Conventional: n = 44). Associations Between Food Insecurity, Psychological Distress and Disordered Eating Risk in University Students: Evidence from a Cross-Sectional Mediation Analysis.

Background/Objective: Food insecurity is increasingly recognised as a concern among university students. Less is known about the interrelationships between food insecurity, psychological distress, and disordered eating risk in this population. This study aimed to examine associations between food insecurity, psychological distress, and disordered eating risk among university students, and to explore whether psychological distress mediates the association between food insecurity and disordered eating. Methods: A cross-sectional survey among university students assessed food insecurity using the

[Analysis of etiologic models of disease development and continuation of bulimia nervosa using structural equation modeling].

In contrast to the great number of etiological models for bulimia nervosa, few conceptions determine the therapeutic practice. Two of these models, the ego-psychological model of reduced impulse-control and the behavioural model focussing the influence of "restrained eating" are empirically compared. Both models are not supposed to be of ubiquitous validity, but valid for subgroups of bulimic women. The theoretical assumptions are translated into structural equations and a sample of 127 bulimic women is divided up into 2 subsamples according to criteria which are presumed to define the validit

Minority stressors and their associations with severe psychological distress among gender-diverse people.

People whose gender does not align with assigned sex often experience negative mental health outcomes related to cisnormative societal expectations and oppression, including familial rejection, threat of harm, and identity invalidation (e.g., misgendering). This study merged two cross-sectional data sets of trans and gender-diverse people (N = 363; Mage = 22.02) investigating how various types of distal minority stress experiences impact psychological distress. We tested the associations between three minority stressors (i.e., family rejection, threat of harm, and identity invalidation) and ps

Exploring the Role of Relationship Dynamics and Chronic Illness in Psychological Outcomes Among Cohabiting Couples During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has exacerbated mental health difficulties among couples. Factors such as chronic physical illness, perceived threat of COVID-19, dyadic coping, and relationship quality may influence levels of psychological distress, including symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. This study aimed to examine how these individual and relational variables are associated with psychological outcomes in cohabiting couples during the first national lockdown in Portugal. METHODS: A mixed-methods study was conducted with a sample of 956 individuals

Parental psychological control and adolescent smartphone addiction: roles of reactance and resilience.

BACKGROUND: Problematic smartphone use is a prevalent issue addressed in this study. The research delves into factors associated with problematic smartphone use, employing the self-determination theory. Specifically, the study analyzes the relationship between parental psychological control and problematic smartphone use and investigates psychological reactance as a mediating factor. Moreover, psychological resilience is considered a moderating factor in the relationship between parental psychological control and problematic smartphone use, based on the diathesis-stress model and cognitive mod

Disability pension during emerging adulthood: Insights from the young-HUNT study on psychological distress, chronic pain, and policy reform.

INTRODUCTION: Disability pension (DP) among young adults has steadily increased in Norway, with chronic pain and psychological distress among the main causes. This study examined the association between co-occurring psychological distress and chronic pain in adolescence and the risk of DP during emerging adulthood, before and after the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) reform. Machine learning survival models were also developed to predict early DP and identify consistent risk factors across cohorts. METHODS: Data from two general population surveys in 1995-1997 (Young-HUNT1)
