From 1982 to 1992, 251 bipolar hip arthroplasties were performed on 213 patients. Among them, 117 bipolar femoral prostheses were randomly selected to examine the behavior of abduction motion under weight-bearing loads. Roentgenographic motion study was performed at an average of 46.5 months after surgery (range, 2-110 months). One hundred one prostheses used in dysplastic osteoarthritic, rheumatoid, and revised failed total hip arthroplasty patients moved 18.2% at the outer bearing and 81.8% at the inner bearing, while 16 prostheses used in femoral neck fracture and osteonecrosis of the femor…

This monograph is intended to provide health professionals with information on a cognitive-behavioral technique which was developed to teach individuals who are prone to motion sickness to better cope with motion environments. It includes an overview of motion sickness, describing the signs and symptoms, etiology and incidence of this malady. Prevention and treatment are then reviewed, including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. The historical background on the cognitive-behavioral technique is then discussed. This is followed by a review of supporting experimental work, …

Gastrointestinal (Gl) symptoms in space motion sickness (SMS) are significantly different from those in ordinary motion sickness (MS). Vomiting is sudden, often unexpected, infrequent, never prolonged and usually without nausea. Inflight bowel sounds are absent in those with SMS but present after recovery and in those not affected. Recording and tabulation of sounds was the only technique that could be used as a measure of motility during spaceflight operations. There were 17 subjects, 6 unaffected by SMS, who made ambulatory recordings pre- and inflight. With one exception, all those affected…

Recent research results from ground and flight experiments on motion sickness and space sickness conducted by the Man Vehicle Laboratory are reviewed. New tools developed include a mathematical model for motion sickness, a method for quantitative measurements of skin pallor and blush in ambulatory subjects, and a magnitude estimation technique for ratio scaling of nausea or discomfort. These have been used to experimentally study the time course of skin pallor and subjective symptoms in laboratory motion sickness. In prolonged sickness, subjects become hypersensitive to nauseogenic stimuli. Re…

This study evaluated the time course to Malaise III in human subjects given naloxone and placebo with a double-blind cross-over protocol in the prevention of motion sickness induced by exposure to coriolis stimulation in a rotating chair. During naloxone tests, subjects reached the designated level of sickness sooner than during the placebo testing (significance greater than 0.05) and their discomfort lingered for up to 3 d--a feature not seen with the placebo. This implicates endogenous opiates with an endogenous protective or adaptive role in the control of motion sickness. It is suggested t…

Previous research on visually induced self-motion found that stimulation of the central visual field (up to 30 degrees in diameter) results in perceived object motion while self-motion requires peripheral stimulation. In the present study, perceived self-motion was induced with a radially expanding pattern simulating observer motion through a space filled with dots, with visual angles of 7.5 degrees, 10.6 degrees, 15 degrees, and 21.2 degrees. Speed and texture density were also varied. The duration of reported self-motion (a) decreased with increased speed, (b) failed to increase with increas…

We compared susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to sudden-stop stimulation as a function of gravitoinertial force level. Our findings show that susceptibility is greatly enhanced, both with eyes-closed and eyes-open, for zero-g and 2-g conditions in parabolic flight compared with 1-g test conditions. The change in susceptibility is likely related to three factors: alterations in vestibulo-ocular function which result from variations in gravitoinertial force level (28,29); the altered pattern of otolithic activity resulting during variations in gravitoinertial force level; and the…

Reliable measurements are prerequisite to the successful conduct of outcome studies. In a study of the performance of physical therapists (n = 5) in evaluating passive mobility of the vertebral column with normal subjects (n = 5), several sources of measurement variability were assessed: the reliability within and between therapists, the criteria for grading, and the subjects themselves. Intratherapist reliability was found to be dependable; intertherapist reliability was not. Problems that merit further study were identified as idiosyncratic behaviors that may develop with experience, subject

Early reports on space exploration suggested that cosmonauts and astronauts sustained "motion sickness" symptoms described as "dizziness, nausea, vomiting, flashes of light, formed hallucinations or illusions of inversion of image in space." Hallucinations may be due to many causes but most of the above symptoms were similar to those experienced by some patients with expanding intracranial lesions whose symptomatology was referable to the temporoparieto-occipital cortex of the brain. On the basis of our observations, it is suggested that the term "motion sickness" might be applied to earthly s…
