Assessment of Olfactory Perception in Individuals with Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who experience motion sickness (MS) frequently mention the presence of smells in the environment as a factor favoring the occurrence of MS symptoms. The aim of the present work was to compare olfactory function in MS sensitive (MS+) and insensitive (MS-) subjects. METHODS: Olfactory testing included determination of odor detection thresholds, subjective evaluation of the quality (intensity, hedonicity, and familiarity) of three different odorants (limonene, isovaleric acid, and petrol) as well as measures of skin conductance responses to these three odorants. RESULTS:…

[The stabilometric evaluation of resistance to motion sickness in man].

This work was designed to develop a mathematical model based on the results of computed stabilometry in the subjects differing in the degree of resistance to motion sickness. The model is designed for the purpose of instant diagnostics in the course of occupational selection. Stabilometric characteristics of 61 men aged from18 to 24 years were compared with those obtained by the method of continuous cumulation of Coriolis accelerations. The accuracy of diagnostics with the use of stabilometry was estimated at 93.2%. It is concluded that computed stabilometry provides an efficacious tool for th…

Motion sickness: comparison of metoclopramide and diphenhydramine to placebo.

OBJECTIVES: This is an evaluation of the efficacy of metoclopramide (MTCP) or diphenhydramine (DPH) to relieve symptoms of motion sickness in patients being transported via ambulance in a mountainous setting. METHODS: This is a prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study of patients transported by ambulance in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Fresno County. Consenting patients who met the inclusion criteria were asked to rate their motion sickness every five minutes using a visual analog scale (VAS) during transport. If motion sickness occurred, they were randomized to rec…

Failure of cetirizine and fexofenadine to prevent motion sickness.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of 2 second-generation antihistamines in modulating motion sickness induced by Coriolis vestibular cross-coupling stimulation. METHODS: This prospective, randomized, double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled study was conducted in 18 healthy adults. Subjects were exposed to Coriolis vestibular cross-coupling in the laboratory using the Staircase Profile Test for baseline susceptibility and when under the influence of cetizirine, fexofenadine, and placebo. Subjective evaluation of sickness symptoms was based on the Graybiel diagnostic criteria of acu…

The retention of adaptation to motion sickness eliciting stimulation.

PURPOSE: This study compared the retention of adaptation to motion sickness eliciting stimulation after 1 mo and 1 yr. METHOD: A total of 34 subjects who developed nausea to an optokinetic rotating drum in a preliminary session repeatedly viewed the same rotation with an interval of 48 h between sessions until they had no feelings of nausea. For each session, subjects' electrogastrograms (EGGs) at 4-9 cycles per minute (cpm) were also recorded as a physiological index of the severity of motion sickness. Subjects were re-exposed to the optokinetic drum either after 1 mo or 1 yr. RESULTS: The …

Physiological basis and pharmacology of motion sickness: an update.

Motion sickness can occur when sensory inputs regarding body position in space are contradictory or are different from those predicted from experience. Signals from the vestibular system are essential for triggering motion sickness. The evolutionary significance of this malady is unclear, although it may simply represent the aberrant activation of vestibuloautonomic pathways that typically subserve homeostasis. The neural pathways that produce nausea and vomiting during motion sickness are presumed to be similar to those that generate illness after ingestion of toxins. The neural substrate of …

The possible role of nystagmus in motion sickness: a hypothesis.

An alternative hypothesis to that provided by conflict theory is formulated to account for motion sickness. The new approach is predicted on the oculocardiac reflex (i.e., bradycardia produced by extra-ocular muscle traction) (18) and empirical evidence that retrobulbar anesthesia significantly lowers the incidence of emesis after strabismus surgery (14). Eye muscle traction is presumed to elicit afferent signals that ultimately stimulate the vagus nerve (15). The same neuromotor sequence is presumed to occur during reflexive eye movements under vestibular control and during more complicated c…

Vestibular and postural findings in the motion sickness syndrome.

The motion sickness syndrome constitutes varying degrees of subjective motion intolerance and three objective findings: hyperactive VOR (79%), hip sway strategy (60%), and positional nystagmus (42%). It is present in subjects who have a strong history of motion sickness. Vestibular rehabilitation appears to help control symptoms. The study also suggests an inheritance pattern, but a structured pedigree could not be constructed. Prospective studies are warranted to further establish the patterns of the motion sickness syndrome.

Role of histamine in motion sickness in Suncus murinus.

The levels of histamine (HA) and tele-methylhistamine (t-MH) were determined in five brain regions of Suncus murinus (suncus) and the effects of motion stimulus or drugs influencing the turnover of these amines were studied to elucidate the role of histamine in motion sickness. Shaking the animals for 2 min increased HA contents in telencephalon and diencephalon without significantly changing the t-MH levels. alpha-Fluoromethylhistidine (alpha-FMH), which is presumed to deplete the neuronal HA, tended to raise the HA levels. alpha-FMH slightly alleviated the vomiting response to motion stimulu…

The effect of antimotion sickness drugs on habituation to motion.

The effect of antimotion sickness drugs on habituation was studied. Subjects were rotated once a day for 5 d to the malaise III end-point after receiving placebo, 1 mg scopolamine, 10 mg d-amphetamine, or the combination of 0.6 mg scopolamine with 5 mg of d-amphetamine. The placebo scores had a Spearman coefficient of correlation of 0.88 with the initial untreated tests. This demonstrated a high reliability for the M-III end-point and that little habituation resulted from the test design. The combination of 0.6 scopolamine with 5 mg amphetamine produced the fastest rate of habituation closely …

Efficacy of phosphatidylcholine in the modulation of motion sickness susceptibility.

This study evaluated the efficacy of pharmacological doses of phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) in the modulation of motion sickness induced by exposure to coriolis stimulation in a rotating chair. Subjects received daily dietary supplements of 25 grams of lecithin (90% phosphatidylcholine) and were tested for their susceptibility to motion sickness after 4 h, 2 d, and 21 d. A small but statistically significant increase in susceptibility (+ 15%) was noted 4 h after supplemental phosphatidylcholine, with four of nine subjects demonstrating a marked increase in susceptibility. We attributed this f…

[Quantitative evaluation of the clinical manifestations of motion sickness].

An original scheme of quantitative evaluation of clinical manifestations of motion sickness has been developed. According to the scheme, eight major symptoms of motion sickness: vertigo, nausea, vomiting, sweating, paleness, headache, sleepiness, flaccidity are scored in relation to their manifestations. The scheme has been used in vestibular tests of 57 test subjects. The vestibular test used is tolerance to cross-coupled acceleration. On the basis of the scores quantitative criteria of human tolerance to vestibular exposures have been suggested. It is emphasized that the scheme can be widely…

Motion sickness induced by periodic accelerations: Effects of motion axis, frequency, and acceleration magnitude.

BackgroundCarsickness is a potential barrier to the acceptance of automated driving as it turns drivers into passengers, thus making them more susceptible to motion sickness. However, most of our current knowledge of how vehicle motion causes motion sickness comes from seasickness studies, using vertical motion only. Some more recent studies have investigated the relationship between horizontal accelerations and motion sickness, but with inconsistent methodology and sometimes conflicting results.ObjectiveTo quantify the effects of acceleration frequency and magnitude for periodic accelerations…
