Could wearing motorcycle protective clothing compromise rider safety in hot weather?

UNLABELLED: Motorcycle protective clothing (PPE) effectively reduces the risk of injury in crashes, however in hot conditions many motorcyclists ride unprotected. Recent work found available motorcycle PPE to be thermally inefficient in hot weather with potential to cause significant thermal strain under average Australian summer conditions. The current study investigated the potential for the cognitive and psychophysical concomitants of thermal strain to compromise reaction times, mood and fatigue with potential consequences for motorcyclists' safety. METHOD: Volunteers wearing motorcycle PP

Helmets Matter: Kentucky Motorcycle Crash Victims Seen at a Tennessee Trauma Center.

OBJECTIVES: Motorcycle helmet laws vary by state, with Kentucky requiring helmets only for younger riders. We hypothesized that motorcyclists injured in Kentucky and seen at a Tennessee trauma center would be more likely to be unhelmeted, have more severe head injuries, and sustain more fatal injuries than those injured in Tennessee or Virginia. METHODS: A Trauma Registry review of 729 injured motorcyclists from January 2005 through June 2015 examined state location of crash, demographics, helmet use, and clinical outcomes. Multivariate logistic regression analysis evaluated predictors for he

Laryngeal Fracture after Blunt Cervical Trauma in Motorcycle Accident and Its Management.

Laryngeal fracture is a rare traumatic injury, potentially fatal, with an estimated incidence of 1 in 30,000 patients admitted to severe trauma centers. Because of the rarity of this injury, physician may be not aware of its existence, leading to a late diagnosis of this entity. We report a case of a 59-year-old woman admitted to the emergency room after a motorcycle accident with cervical trauma. The patient presented with dysphonia, hemoptysis, cervical subcutaneous emphysema, and increasing respiratory distress that led to the intubation of the patient. CT-scan demonstrated displaced fractu

Riding into the golden years: injury patterns and outcomes of advanced-age motorcycle trauma.

BACKGROUND: Our objectives were to characterize injury, complications, and outcomes for older riders after motorcycle accidents due to the rising trend in advanced-age motorcyclists. METHODS: From 2008 to 2013, injured motorcyclists were compared by age group: younger (0 to 54 years) vs older (≥55 years) in a retrospective review of the trauma databank at North Memorial Medical Center, a Level-1 trauma center. RESULTS: Of 432 patients, the older group (n = 100) had more fractures (60% vs 42%), injuries per patient (2 vs 1), intensive care unit admissions (48% vs 32%), ventilator days (8 vs 5

Nurse led telephone follow-up improves satisfaction in motorcycle trauma patients.

Telephone follow-up (TFU) is a good tool for providing transfer of health education, dealing with symptomatic concerns, early recognition of potential complications, and reassuring the patient after discharge. Telephone follow-up may also decrease knowledge deficits, increase communication improving patient satisfaction and patient outcomes to include decreased emergency department visits and hospital readmissions. An advanced practice nurse-led TFU program involving 59 motorcycle trauma patients discharged to home demonstrates how effective TFU can improve patient satisfaction in motorcycle t

Prevalence and severity of pterygium among commercial motorcycle riders in south eastern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Pterygium is common among outdoor workers who are daily exposed to sunlight and dust due to repeated conjunctival /corneal drying and micro-trauma especially in the tropics. Commercial motorcyclists in Nigeria are outdoor workers who spend the greater part of the day outdoors under the intense heat and dust characteristic of this part of the world and would therefore be largely predisposed to developing this conjunctival disorder. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and severity of pterygium among these workers and relate these findings to their duratio

Induction of cardiac fibrosis and transforming growth factor-β1 by motorcycle exhaust in rats.

Motorcycle exhaust (ME) is a major source of air pollution and a potential health hazard in urban areas where motorcycles are a popular means of transportation. The main objectives of this study were to determine the ability of ME to cause cardiotoxicity in rats and investigate the possible mechanisms of toxicity. Male rats were exposed to 1:10 diluted ME by inhalation 2 h daily and Monday through Friday for 8 weeks. Exposure to ME increased heart weight and decreased cardiac antioxidant enzymes glutathione S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities in a co

A comparison of the hazard perception ability of accident-involved and accident-free motorcycle riders.

Hazard perception is the ability to read the road and is closely related to involvement in traffic accidents. It consists of both cognitive and behavioral components. Within the cognitive component, visual attention is an important function of driving whereas driving behavior, which represents the behavioral component, can affect the hazard perception of the driver. Motorcycle riders are the most vulnerable types of road user. The primary purpose of this study was to deepen our understanding of the correlation of different subtypes of visual attention and driving violation behaviors and their

Paternalism and its discontents: motorcycle helmet laws, libertarian values, and public health.

The history of motorcycle helmet legislation in the United States reflects the extent to which concerns about individual liberties have shaped the public health debate. Despite overwhelming epidemiological evidence that motorcycle helmet laws reduce fatalities and serious injuries, only 20 states currently require all riders to wear helmets. During the past 3 decades, federal government efforts to push states toward enactment of universal helmet laws have faltered, and motorcyclists' advocacy groups have been successful at repealing state helmet laws. This history raises questions about the po

An analysis of motorcycle injury and vehicle damage severity using ordered probit models.

PROBLEM: Motorcycles constitute about 19% of all motorized vehicles in Singapore and are generally overrepresented in traffic accidents, accounting for 40% of total fatalities. METHOD: In this paper, an ordered probit model is used to examine factors that affect the injury severity of motorcycle accidents and the severity of damage to the vehicle for those crashes. Nine years of motorcycle accident data were obtained for Singapore through police reports. These data included categorical assessments of the severity of accidents based on three levels. Damage severity to the vehicle was also asse
