Isolation and Suffering Related to Serious and Terminal Illness: Metaphors and Lessons From Albert Camus' Novel, The Plague.

Health care providers have much to learn from Albert Camus' great novel, The Plague. The Plague tells the story of a bubonic plague epidemic through the lens of doctor-narrator Rieux. In addition to Rieux, this essay also focuses on the perspective of Father Paneloux, a Jesuit priest, who provides important religious commentary on the epidemic, before falling victim to it and dying. Camus' masterful engagement of the metaphor of isolation and its profound impact on suffering emphasizes the important role of community and spiritual perspectives of patients and providers in coping with serious i

Paediatric tuberculosis and DOTS strategy under RNTCP.

Most children acquire the organism of tuberculosis from adults in their surroundings. In developing countries the annual risk of tuberculosis infection is 2-5%. Nearly 8-20% of the deaths caused by tuberculosis occur in children. Diagnosis of tuberculosis in children is problematic. More weightage is given to laboratory tests. BCG vaccination is responsible for decrease in the occurrence of disseminated and severe disease. Suggested guidelines for suspected tuberculous, probable tuberculosis and confirmed tuberculosis have been narrated. Tuberculosis experts and paediatricians have recommended

Retinopathy of prematurity.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative disorder of the retina that occurs in premature and low birth weight babies. Stages of ROP are 1, 2, 3, 4A, 4B and 5. There are three zones I, II and III. Screening is essential to detect ROP. Whom, when and how to screen ROP has been narrated in a nutshell. Once threshold ROP is detected, it is essential to treat within 72 hours. Retinal ablation of the avascular retina is done using laser photocoagulation or cryotherapy. Rush disease is primarily a zone I ROP with extraretinal proliferation. It requires aggressive laser treatment with l

Neural envelope tracking predicts speech intelligibility and hearing aid benefit in children with hearing loss.

Early assessment of hearing aid benefit is crucial, as the extent to which hearing aids provide audible speech information predicts speech and language outcomes. A growing body of research has proposed neural envelope tracking as an objective measure of speech intelligibility, particularly for individuals unable to provide reliable behavioral feedback. However, its potential for evaluating speech intelligibility and hearing aid benefit in children with hearing loss remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated neural envelope tracking in children with permanent hearing loss through two se

End chapter: illness memoirs and narrative humility in shaping the language of palliative care.

Palliative care communication often balances clarity with compassion, yet its professional and goal-oriented language can inadvertently mute the emotional and existential realities of dying. Illness memoirs, by contrast, linger in the texture of lived experience, offering narrative forms that resist closure and invite deeper engagement with mortality. This study conducts a comparative analysis of professional palliative care discourse and two contemporary illness memoirs, Paul Kalanithi's When Breath Becomes Air and Jenny Diski's In Gratitude, applying Rita Charon's concept of narrative compet

"We saw and heard things no child should ever see and hear." Rwandan youth narratives of enduring intimate partner violence between parents.

BACKGROUND: In Rwanda, childhood experiences of intimate partner violence (CEIPV) have rarely been documented through direct youth voices. Most available studies rely on adult informants or external indicators. OBJECTIVE: This study explored how Rwandan youth narrate and make meaning of their CEIPV and how these experiences affected their childhoods and later lives. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Thirteen youth aged 22-25 years with histories of CEIPV participated in the study. All were living in Kigali or its outskirts at the time of recruitment. METHODS: Using a collective narrative methodolog

Digital storytelling as a memory-making intervention for children and families in paediatric palliative care in Ireland: an adaptation study.

Memory making is a core component of holistic paediatric palliative care. However, traditional artifact-based keepsakes (e.g., handprints) are often passive and lack the developmental and cultural sensitivity needed for meaningful engagement. A more participatory, narrative-based, multimedia approach, such as digital storytelling, is therefore required. Following the ADAPT framework (Steps 1-2: Intervention-Context Fit and Planning Adaptations), this study adapted a U.S. developed digital storytelling intervention for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions and their famili

The Lived Experience of Delirium in a Critically Ill Child: A Narrative Study.

BACKGROUND: While the negative experience of intensive care delirium has been established in adults, paediatric delirium (PD) is increasingly being recognized internationally. Knowledge, however, is still lacking regarding the experience of delirium in critically ill children. Therefore, we wish to provide insight into the subjective experience of delirium to better understand the children's perspective and enable the development of strategies to support children and their parents during and after the delirium episode. AIM: We aimed to describe the lived experience of delirium in a paediatric

Telling our history: a narrative study with Indigenous elders, wisdom for the coming generation.

INTRODUCTION: The history of AIAN people in the US has been told many times, but Western academic researchers have failed to shift that history into wisdom and uncover teachings for living in the present day. The aim of this paper is to document Indigenous elders' childhood experiences and stories, and to record the wisdom they wish to pass on to the next generation in an accessible, written form. METHODS: This study used elder-centered research methods situated within a postcolonial paradigm. Methods centered on the lived experience and values of Indigenous people and a three-step process of

Fictional Fantasies: Exploring Paraphilic Narratives in Literary Spaces.

Limited empirical investigation has explored how women engage with atypical sexuality. Some studies suggest that women may express paraphilic interests through fantasy, rather than action. The current study examined the expression of atypical sexuality on Wattpad, a popular fiction-based website whose readership is primarily female. Using 123 search terms based on a variety of sexual interests, data were collected on 102 distinct stories. A thematic analysis of the most popular stories (n = 11), ranging from 11,300,000 to 196,000,000 reads, revealed themes including masochism, exophilia, homoe

Wound care across diverse skin tones in the community nursing context: a critical narrative analysis.

Wound assessment in the UK community setting remains heavily reliant on visual cues, such as erythema, which are unreliable in darker skin tones. This continued reliance on a light-skin norm represents a form of hidden systemic bias that risks delayed diagnosis and avoidable harm for a growing segment of the population. This article draws on empirical and conceptual literature to develop a critical narrative analysis of how skin tone diversity affects wound assessment, diagnosis and management in UK community nursing practice. It synthesises evidence on diagnostic delays, critiques the inadequ

One of the Many Things That I've Learned on This Journey…: A Co-operative, Narrative Inquiry With Two Care Partners of Spouses With Young Onset Dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Young-onset dementia (YOD) is a term used when people demonstrate symptoms or are diagnosed with dementia before 65 years of age. YOD can be challenging to diagnose because health practitioners often do not initially consider dementia as the cause of someone's change in health or function in their 40 s, 50 s or even early 60 s. This can be the start of a complex journey for both the person living with YOD and their care partner. The aim of this study was to explore the journey for two care partners whose spouses were diagnosed with YOD. METHODS: Co-operative, narrative inquiry,

Co-designing narrative resources for implementation in lower limb amputation rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: Narratives help people to make sense of illness and trauma experiences. Exposure to a breadth of narratives is proposed to offer validation, reassurance and support well-being. Previous research constructed five narratives from people with major lower limb amputation (MLLA). However, efforts to bridge the research-practice gap, and meet clinical priorities by translating the narratives into resources, remained. This study aimed to illustrate an immersive co-design process and develop narrative resources for healthcare professionals working within, and people undergoing MLLA rehabilita

Growing Up and Growing Older with Down Syndrome: The Impact of Parents' Perspectives and Experiences.

This commentary shares my experiences of overcoming bias and negativity to lead an active, fulfilling, and meaningful life as someone with Down syndrome. With my parents' input and support, I dealt with various issues and challenges posed by societal misconceptions and outdated ideas. This commentary is enriched by narratives written by 12 parents of children with Down syndrome. Many of the authors have faced discrimination from healthcare professionals, educators, and policymakers. The stories discuss bias, stereotypes, negativity, and outdated ideas and information, showing the need for bett

How do people story their experience of miscarriage? A systematic review of qualitative literature.

Literature surrounding miscarriage is broad in scope, yet narrative constructions following miscarriage are significantly under-researched. Few studies have sought to understand sense-making processes following miscarriage, including how and why people story their experience. Consequently, the complexities and nuances of these processes have not been adequately explored. This review aimed to gain insight into what is already known about how people story their experience of miscarriage, as well as research gaps and limitations. A systematic literature review of qualitative literature was conduc

Presentation matters: Surface text features and text quality in written narratives of Dutch high school students with and without dyslexia.

Presentation features such as spelling, punctuation and handwriting can influence the evaluation of general text quality. High school students with dyslexia might therefore be at a disadvantage, as at least their spelling performance is typically poor(er). Furthermore, these students might show less sophisticated linguistic features of texts, such as word length and sentence complexity, that might also be related to text quality. We compared narratives written by Dutch high school students (mean age 13.7 years) with (n = 28) and without (n = 29) dyslexia. Students with dyslexia's texts contain

Patient identity narratives through the cultural formulation interview in a New York City outpatient clinic.

Anthropologists have critiqued cultural competence programs in medical settings while introducing mental health clinicians to social theories on culture for practice. We explore how patients articulated narratives about themselves and how clinicians responded to such narratives through an intervention known as the Cultural Formulation Interview that anthropologists have helped develop. We conducted over 500 hours of fieldwork from 2014 to 2019 at an outpatient clinic in New York, analyzing multiple data (participant observation, medical records, patient-clinician sessions, and individual debri

Narrative care: Unpacking pandemic paradoxes.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, public health has issued three interrelated dominant narratives through social media and news outlets: First, to care for others, we must keep physically distant; second, we live in the same world and experience the same pandemic; and third, we will return to normal at some point. These narratives create complexities as they collide with the authors' everyday lives as nurses, educators, and women. This collision creates three paradoxes for us: (a) learning to care by creating physical distance, (b) a sense of togetherness erases inequities, and (c)
