Fatty acid oxidation in neonatal hepatocytes: effects of sepsis and glutamine.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about fat use during sepsis during the neonatal period. Intramitochondrial O(2) consumption is inhibited in isolated hepatocytes from suckling septic rats and this impairment is reversed by glutamine. We investigated the effect of neonatal sepsis on fat oxidation and whether glutamine can directly affect fatty acid oxidation. METHODS: Suckling Wistar rats (11 d) received an intraperitoneal injection of 300 microg/kg of lipopolysaccharide (Escherichia coli 055:B5); controls received normal saline. At 2 h, hepatocytes were isolated. Hepatocytes were incubated at 37 de

Effect of sepsis syndrome on neonatal oxygen consumption and energy expenditure.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide production, and energy expenditure (EE) in full-term neonates with early-onset neonatal septicemia daily for 7 days beginning at the day of clinical diagnosis of sepsis. METHODS: A total of 17 spontaneously breathing full-term neonates, 10 with clinical signs of sepsis and 7 healthy neonates (control group), were enrolled in the study. Age at first study day was 3 +/- 0.9 days in both groups. Sepsis syndrome was defined as a systemic response to a bacterial infection with clinical signs of infection, elevated values of interleuki

Intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis increases the incidence of gram-negative neonatal sepsis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of the increased use of intrapartum chemoprophylaxis on the incidence of vertically transmitted neonatal sepsis. METHODS: Multiple institutional databases were queried for the number of cases in which intrapartum antibiotics were used, the obstetric risk factors that were present, and the number of resultant cases of neonatal sepsis that occurred for deliveries from 1992 through 1997. Intrapartum antibiotic use was compared between the first and fourth quarter of 1997. Comparisons were made between the years 1992-1996 and 1997 for the incidence of the v

Group B streptococcal C protein-associated antigens: association with neonatal sepsis.

The c protein (Ibc) of group B streptococci (GBS) is associated with at least four antigens (alpha, beta, gamma, delta). To assess the virulence potential of these antigens, 255 GBS isolates recovered from septic neonates, healthy neonates, and pregnant women were serotyped and surveyed for reactivity with sera to c protein and the four associated antigens. A radioimmunoassay using intact bacteria was used to detect the GBS antigens. In contrast to earlier reports, most (66%) of the type III strains expressed the c protein. Except for the gamma antigen, none of the other c protein-associated a

Neonatal enterococcal sepsis: case-control study and description of an outbreak.

An increased incidence of neonatal sepsis caused by Group D streptococci, specifically enterococci (GDE), during a recent 6-month period prompted a 5-year review of enterococcal sepsis in our neonatal intensive care unit. Sixteen episodes occurred in 14 babies. GDE accounted for 8 of 19 (42%) episodes of neonatal bacteremia during the epidemic period vs. only 8 of 159 (5%) episodes during the remaining 4.5 years (endemic period) (P less than 0.001). Blood isolates were all identified as Streptococcus faecalis. A combination of three strain-typing methods successfully distinguished the epidemic

[Diagnostic value of C reactive protein in neonatal sepsis (author's transl)].

Seric levels of C reactive protein (C.R.P.) were determined in a series of 125 children under one month old. Of them, 75 were clinically healthy and 50 showed signs that suggested infection. In all this infants, in addition to C.R.P., different components of white blood cell differential count were determined, and a bacteriological study was undergone. Authors found high concentration of C.R.P. in 100% of children in which diagnosis of sepsis was bacteriologically confirmed. On the other hand, concentrations of this biological parameter were not substantially modified in newborns used in the c

Increased incidence of gram-negative neonatal sepsis with intramuscula iron administration.

During a five-year period the incidence of neonatal sepsis was 20 times higher in Polynesian newborns compared with European newborns (11 per 1,000 vs. 0.6 per 1,000 total births). This high incidence in Polynesians was confined to a period when the infants were being given intramuscular iron dextran. When the iron administration was stopped the incidence of disease in Polynesians decreased from 17 per 1,000 to 2.7 per 1,000 total births. An analysis of the Polynesian iron-treated and non-iron-treated groups showed a statistically significant difference in the incidence of sepsis, the type of

Bacteria Pathogen Distribution in Late-Onset Neonatal Sepsis: Trends from a South African Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Late-onset sepsis (LOS) in neonates is defined as a bloodstream infection occurring after 72 hours of life and is primarily caused by bacterial pathogens, often associated with catheter use and prolonged hospitalization. Despite its clinical and policy relevance, limited data exist on the etiology of neonatal infections in sub-Saharan Africa. This 8-year retrospective study investigated microbial patterns and antibiotic trends of LOS in a South African neonatal unit to inform infection control and antibiotic stewardship strategies. Data from neonates weighing 500 to 2,500 g admitted to the neo

Epidemiology of neonatal sepsis in two neonatal intensive care units in Krakow, Poland in 2016-2017 years.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis in low-birth-weight neonates remains one of the most significant causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Approximately 3 million newborns suffer from sepsis globally every year. The aim of this study was to compare demographic and clinical features, as well as etiology and antibiotic susceptibility, of the main pathogens related to neonatal sepsis in two neonatal intensive units during a two-year period. METHODS: We observed early-onset (EO-BSI) and late-onset bloodstream infections (LO-BSI) cases in two high-reference neonatal intensive care units (NICU) over a 24-mont

Epidemiology of neonatal sepsis caused by multidrug resistant pathogens in a neonatal intensive care unit level 3.

Aim Steady progress in intensive treatment worldwide has increased the survival of immature neonates, but with multiple invasive procedures, which have increased the risk of infection, thus the bacterial resistance to antibiotics. The aim of this study was to analyse the epidemiology of multidrug resistance pathogens as causative agents of neonatal sepsis in the neonatal intensive care unit. Methods A retrospective cohort study conducted at the Intensive care unit of the Paediatric Clinic of Tuzla over a three-year period (2016-2018) analysed epidemiology of neonatal sepsis caused by multidrug

Bacteriological Profile of Neonatal Sepsis in Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit of Central Paediatric Referral Hospital in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is one of the leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Because of difference in local epidemiology and possible variation with time, regular monitoring and updates on pathogen and their antimicrobial sensitivity pattern is important for prevention and treatment. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study was carried out among cases of neonatal sepsis admitted in neonatal intermediate care unit of Kanti Children's hospital from August 2014 to August 2015. The data was collected from medical records of neonatal intermediate care unit and microbiology department and

SEPSIS project: a protocol for studying biomarkers of neonatal sepsis and immune responses of infants in a malaria-endemic region.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal sepsis outreaches all causes of neonatal mortality worldwide and remains a major societal burden in low and middle income countries. In addition to limited resources, endemic morbidities, such as malaria and prematurity, predispose neonates and infants to invasive infection by altering neonatal immune response to pathogens. Nevertheless, thoughtful epidemiological, diagnostic and immunological evaluation of neonatal sepsis and the impact of gestational malaria have never been performed. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A prospective longitudinal multicentre follow-up of 580 infant

Association of Vitamin D Deficiency with Late Onset Neonatal Sepsis in Term and Late Preterm Neonates.

Sepsis is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in low- and middle- income countries (LMIC). It is estimated to cause almost 1 million deaths that accounts for more than 25.0% of neonatal deaths worldwide. In Bangladesh the incidence of neonatal sepsis is 13.4% and sepsis contributes to almost 19.9% of all neonatal death. Vitamin D deficiency in mothers and neonates is being recognized increasingly as a leading cause of many adverse health effects in the newborn infant, including sepsis. Vitamin D plays an important role in calcium and phosphorus homeostasis
