Atypical fibroxanthoma-a diagnosis of exclusion!

Fibrohistiocytic tumors of the skin comprise a large range of lesions. One such tumor is the atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX), which is widely considered as a "pseudomalignant" tumor. It is derived from fibroblasts and expresses a variety of histiocytic markers. We present a case of AFX, localized in the right temporal region of the scalp, successfully treated with surgical excision. Immunohistochemical staining helps differentiate this tumor from others in the clinical differential diagnosis, including malignant melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and other nonmelanocytic spindle cell tumors such

Clinicopathologic Study of Calcifying Fibrous Tumor Emphasizing Different Anatomical Distribution and Favorable Prognosis.

AIMS: Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a very rare begin fibroblastic tumor featuring a widely anatomical distribution and may mimic various spindle cell tumors. Misdiagnosis and hence mistreatment are likely caused due to unfamiliarity to clinicians or junior pathologists. We collected a relatively large series of CFTs in our institution aiming at further summarizing their clinicopathologic features in Chinese patients and discussing the diagnosis and differential diagnosis in clinical practice. METHODS: Clinicopathologic data of 22 CFTs were retrospectively reviewed. Histologic features we

Calcifying fibrous pseudotumor of the breast.

Calcifying fibrous pseudotumor (CFP) is classified as a benign fibrous lesion, and is a rare pathologic entity. Previous reports have described CFPs in the extremities, chest wall, pleura, scrotum, mediastinum, neck, and visceral peritoneum. We present the first reported case of a CFP in the breast. CFP should be considered in the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with coarse indeterminate calcifications of the breast.

Solitary fibrous tumour of the soft tissue of the face: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm described first in the pleura. Recently, SFTs have been found in various extra-serosal locations, including the head and neck region. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of SFT originating from the periorbital region of the face. Preoperative cytological examination by fine needle aspiration biopsy diagnosed a mesenchymal tumour. The patient underwent surgical resection. The mass was completely resected. Definitive histopathologic and immunohistologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of SFT. DISCUSSION: The rare lo

Solitary fibrous tumor of the orbit--two cases and a review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumors of the orbit (SFT) are mesenchymal lesions that can develop either as malignant or benign neoplasias. We describe the histological features leading to the diagnosis in two females and review the current literature. Diagnosis of SFT only can be performed by histological examination, since clinical signs and radiological features are not specific enough. Even a malignant or benign course cannot be predicted, since clinical and radiological features do not correlate with histological signs of malignancy and vice versa. Radical resection is the treatment of choice, since no

Monoclonal antibody defining fibroblasts appearing in fetal and neoplastic tissues.

VIF3 is a hybridoma-derived mouse IgG monoclonal antibody (MoAb) generated in a fusion with the use of a malignant fibrous histiocytoma as the immunizing agent and shown to recognize a 70-kilodalton antigen expressed within connective tissues. Of 55 human tissue culture cell lines tested by indirect immunofluorescence, VIF3 was shown to bind to 20 of 35 (57%) sarcomas, 4 of 9 (44%) normal fibroblasts, and none of 11 carcinomas and other neoplasm-derived cell lines. A panel of over 259 human frozen tissue sections obtained from surgical pathology specimens, postmortem studies, and elective abor

Fibrous histiocytoma and fibrous tissue tumors of the orbit.

Fibrous orbital tumors present clinically and radiographically in a broad spectrum ranging from a benign mass, to locally aggressive tumor, to invasive malignancy. Pathologic analysis and diagnosis are often challenging, usually based on a combination of light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopic findings. Some light microscopic and immunohistochemical findings, however, are relatively characteristic. A storiform or cartwheel pattern and vimentin staining are characteristic of fibrous histiocytoma. A herringbone pattern is usually found in fibrosarcoma. A "patternless pat

Novel Histologic Features in Ameloblastoma With RASQ61R Mutation.

Ameloblastoma is characterized histologically by evidence of ameloblastic differentiation and molecularly by MAPK pathway alterations, most frequently BRAFV600E mutation and RAS mutations, as well as by SMO mutations. This mutational profile is present across all histologic variants, including those occasionally lacking overt histologic evidence of ameloblastic differentiation, such as desmoplastic ameloblastoma and granular cell ameloblastoma. Recently, we have come across 4 cases of maxillary ameloblastoma demonstrating peculiar histologic features not accounted for by recognized histologic

Asymptomatic lipofibroadenoma in a 17-year-old male: a case report and literature review of a rare entity.

BACKGROUND: The most common thymic tumours, thymomas, are derived from thymic epithelium and are generally low-grade neoplasm. Frankly malignant tumours, thymic carcinomas are rarer still. Exceedingly rare thymic tumours contain a mesenchymal tissue component such as fibrous connective tissue and/or mature fat. Lipofibroadenoma (LFA) is a very rare mixed epithelial-mesenchymal thymic tumour, included in the category of thymic epithelial tumors. LFA in addition to a mature adipocytic component, contains variable epithelial and mesenchymal tissue components. Owing to the presence of an epithelia

An isolated orbital mass with proptosis and diplopia: an uncommon metastasis from intracranial olfactory neuroblastoma in a chinese patient.

PURPOSE: Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare neuroectodermal malignant neoplasm that originates from the olfactory sensory epithelium. In reported cases involving the orbit, the primary neoplasms could invade the orbits through bone destruction or cranio-orbital communication anatomical structure. The present study reports a rare case of orbital metastatic tumor arising from an intracranial ONB in a Chinese patient, which is the first case demonstrating an uncommon route of ONB involving the orbit. PATIENT AND METHODS: A 62-year-old man with a right orbital tumor was diagnosed as having a

Jejunal calcifying fibrous tumor: A jigsaw puzzle with a pool of diagnostic dilemma.

Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a very rare benign fibroblastic tumor featuring a wide anatomical distribution and mimicking various spindle cell tumors. CFT has been documented in soft tissues, gastrointestinal tract (GIT), neck, adrenal glands, and pleura. Within the GIT, it is reported in the stomach, small bowel, large intestine, stomach, esophagus, and appendix. The occurrence of CFTs in the gastrointestinal tract presents a diagnostic dilemma, firstly due to the rarity of the lesion and secondly, due to the occurrence of a variety of other stromal lesions in the gastrointestinal tract

Solitary fibrous tumor of the scalp in a child.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that arise most commonly in the pleura but have been increasingly reported in extrapleural sites. The authors report the case of an SFT of the scalp that manifested as an enlarging scalp mass in a 2-year-old boy. The mass was surgically excised. Histological examination showed it to be composed of fusiform cells of variable cellularity with a central hyalinization zone. Immunohistochemical staining was positive for CD34 and negative for smooth muscle actin, S100 protein, desmin, and h-caldesmon. On 1-year follow-up, there was no rec

Large solitary fibrous tumor of the retroperitoneum: report of a case.

We report an unusual case of a large solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) in the retroperitoneum. A 53-year-old man was referred to our hospital for surgical treatment of a swelling in the right flank with dull pain. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) and echograms showed a large encapsulated tumor compressing the right kidney and liver. At laparotomy, the tumor was found to be encapsulated but fixed to the capsule of the right kidney within a small area. Therefore, complete removal was achieved. The resected specimen was an encapsulated elastic hard tumor, 14 x 13 x 10 cm in size. Immunohistochemical

Hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy and metastases from a malignant fibrous histiocytoma.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma is a recently accepted member of the mesenchymal group of tumors. Hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy is rarely seen with metastatic lung disease but when it occurs it is most frequently described with sarcomatous tumor metastases. In the case reported here, this phenomenon developed with pulmonary metastases from a malignant fibrous histiocytoma, indicating that this tumor resembles other sarcomas in giving rise to this unusual clinical syndrome.

Lipoleiomyoma of the reproductive tract in a Huntaway bitch.

CASE HISTORY: A marked perineal swelling was identified in a 4-year-old entire nulliparous Huntaway bitch. The mass was first observed at last oestrus, 6 months previously. CLINICAL FINDINGS: A diffuse swelling was visible in the perineum that extended from the anus to the vulva. The vulval commisure was distorted ventrolaterally. An extraluminal mass involved the vulva, vestibule and vagina. On rectal and vaginal examination the rostral extent could not be identified. There was no palpable intraluminal mass. The bitch produced a reduced urine flow, and there was complete voiding of the bladd

Primary intrathoracic synovial sarcoma: a clinicopathologic study of 40 t(X;18)-positive cases from the French Sarcoma Group and the Mesopath Group.

Synovial sarcoma (SS), an aggressive neoplasm accounting for up to 14% of soft tissue sarcomas, was recently recognized as a primary tumor in the lung and pleura. SS is characterized by the chromosomal translocation t(X;18)(SYT-SSX) found in more than 95% of the tumors. We report a cooperative study from the French Sarcoma Group and the Mesopath Group on 40 t(X;18)(SYT-SSX)-positive primary intrathoracic SS. There were 22 males and 18 females, whose age ranged from 16 to 79 years (median, 47 years). Neoplasms were mostly circumscribed and of large size (median, 7.5 cm; range, 2-16 cm). Thirty-

Testicular "tumor" of the adrenogenital syndrome: a case report of an unusual association with myelolipoma and seminoma in cryptorchidism.

BACKGROUND: Males with congenital adrenal hyperplasia may develop bilateral testicular masses in early adult life. These are not malignant and generally regress with corticosteroid therapy. The authors report a case occurring in a 44-year-old man with associated seminoma and myelolipoma in an undescended testis. METHODS: The testicular tumors were analyzed by histologic, flow cytometric, and ultrastructural techniques. RESULTS: The tumors in both testes were comprised of polygonal cells with abundant granular eosinophilic cytoplasm, occasionally with brown (lipochrome) pigment and round nucl

A prospective study of nonrhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcomas in the pediatric age group.

Nonrhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcomas in infants and children are rare malignancies with most of the clinical data gained by retrospective analysis. In 1986, a prospective multicentered study was initiated by the Pediatric Oncology Group (POG) with a total of 75 cases now entered for epidemiologic examination. Median age of presentation was 12 years (range, newborn to 20 years). The male to female ratio was 2.3 to 1. The most common soft tissue tumor was synovial cell sarcoma (32/75, 42%), followed by fibrosarcoma (10/75, 13%), malignant fibrous histiocytoma (9/75, 12%), and malignant neuro
