The phenotypic spectrum of PCDH12 associated disorders - Five new cases and review of the literature.

PCDH12 is a member of the non-clustered protocadherin family of calcium-dependent cell adhesion proteins, which are involved in the regulation of brain development and endothelial adhesion. To date, only 15 families have been reported with PCDH12 associated disease. The main features previously associated with PCDH12 deficiency are developmental delay, movement disorder, epilepsy, microcephaly, visual impairment, midbrain malformations, and intracranial calcifications. Here, we report novel clinical features such as onset of epilepsy after infancy, episodes of transient developmental regressio

Intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas: natural history and rationale for treatment with stereotactic radiosurgery.

Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are abnormal arteriovenous communications within the dura. The symptoms depend on their location and the pattern of the venous drainage. Patients with cavernous sinus DAVFs often present with ocular manifestations such as exophthalmos, chemosis and diplopia. Patients with transverse or sigmoid sinus DAVFs frequently experience headache and tinnitus on the affected side. DAVFs with anterograde sinus or cortical venous drainage (CVD) have been clinically regarded as benign, whereas DAVFs with retrograde CVD are considered aggressive in behavior. Similar to ot

Coil embolization of distal vascular lesion using a 1.5 Fr Marathon microcatheter and 'free-running' technique.

In distal vascular lesions, such as the distal anterior inferior cerebellar artery or posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) dissecting aneurysm, and dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF) and arteriovenous malformation (AVM), super-selective catheterization and embolization using liquid agents, such as NBCA or Onyx liquid embolic system, is the preferred treatment.1 2 We used a flow-directed 1.5 Fr Marathon microcatheter (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) for embolization because commonly used detachable coil-compatible microcatheters can be too short or rigid for superselection.3-6 We design

Digital exoscope versus surgical microscope in spinal dural arteriovenous fistula surgery: a comparative series.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical treatment of spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) has been reported to be superior to endovascular treatment in terms of occlusion of the fistula. Despite the increased availability of digital 3D exoscopes, the potential benefits of using an exoscope in spinal DAVF surgery have not been studied. The purpose of this study was to report and compare the results of exoscope- and microscope-assisted surgery for spinal DAVFs. METHODS: All consecutive adult patients (≥ 18 years of age) treated surgically for spinal DAVFs from January 2016 to January 2023 in a tertiary neur

Risk factors associated with congenital central nervous system abnormalities in the National Hospital of Zinder, Niger.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital malformations of the central nervous system (CNS) are morphological abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord that occur during fetal development. They constitute the second most common congenital disability, after congenital cardiac defects. Many risk factors have been identified; however, these studies included various types of congenital abnormality. Furthermore, there is a lack of information on risk factors for congenital CNS malformation, and notably in the Zinder region of Niger. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with congenit

Multiple Synchronous Spinal Dural Arteriovenous Fistulas: A Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas (SDAVFs) lead to progressive neurological decline with symptoms such as paraparesis, bowel and bladder dysfunction, and sensory disturbances because of impaired spinal cord venous drainage. This study aimed to systematically review the literature on multiple synchronous SDAVFs and present 2 cases from our institution. METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed to identify all published cases of multiple synchronous SDAVFs. Overall, 23 patients with multiple synchronous SDAVFs were identified, including 21 from 19 articles and 2

Dural arteriovenous fistula with progressive dementia and parkinsonism: Two case reports and a literature review.

RATIONALE: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are rare cerebral abnormal arteriovenous anastomoses. It is uncommon for DAVFs with parkinsonism and dementia, so it is easily misdiagnosed. Neuroimaging examinations show that multifocal DAVFs are related to venous thrombosis and white matter changes, suggesting that cerebral circulatory disorders caused by venous hypertensive encephalopathy lead to dementia in patients. Digital subtraction angiography confirmed the diagnosis and subsequent treatment of DAVFs. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report 2 cases, one caused by bilateral white matter lesions and

The role of cilia for hydrocephalus formation.

Hydrocephalus is a common finding in newborns. In most cases, it is caused by intraventricular hemorrhage associated with prematurity, whereas in some patients the cause of hydrocephalus can be traced back to genetic changes, associated with disease syndromes such as RASopathies, lysosomal storage diseases, dystroglycanopathies, craniosynostosis but also ciliopathies. Ciliopathies are a group of diseases that can affect multiple organ systems due to dysfunction or the absence of cilia. Cilia are small organelles, extending from the cell surface. Nonmotile monocilia are ubiquitously present dur

Brain capillary telangiectasias: from normal variants to disease.

BACKGROUND: Brain capillary telangiectasias (BCTs) are small, dilated capillary networks in the brain that are most commonly asymptomatic. Though rare, symptomatic cases of BCTs have been reported, and it is therefore important to understand the nature of these lesions in order to facilitate proper recognition. Relative to other intracranial vascular malformations, updated information on the various epidemiologic, radiographic, and pathologic features of BCTs within the published literature may be inadequate. METHODS: We searched the PubMed database for prior reports of symptomatically-manife
