Machine learning-based prediction of post-induction hypotension: identifying risk factors and enhancing anesthesia management.

BACKGROUND: Post-induction hypotension (PIH) increases surgical complications including myocardial injury, acute kidney injury, delirium, stroke, prolonged hospitalization, and endangerment of the patient's life. Machine learning is an effective tool to analyze large amounts of data and identify perioperative complication factors. This study aims to identify risk factors for PIH and develop predictive models to support anesthesia management. METHODS: A dataset of 5406 patients was analyzed using machine learning methods. Logistic regression, random forest, XGBoost, and neural network models w

Multivariate Neural Patterns of Reward and Anxiety in Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa.

People with anorexia nervosa (AN) commonly exhibit elevated anxiety and atypical reward responsiveness. To examine multivariate neural patterns associated with reward and the impact of anxiety on reward, we analyzed fMRI data from a monetary reward task using representational similarity analysis, a multivariate approach that measures trial-by-trial consistency of neural responses. Twenty-five adolescent girls with AN and 22 mildly anxious controls lacking any history of AN were presented personalized anxiety-provoking or neutral words before receiving a reward, and neural response patterns in

Altered Cervical Spinal Cord Resting-State Activity in Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Altered afferent input and central neural modulation are thought to contribute to fibromyalgia symptoms, and these processes converge within the spinal cord. We undertook this study to investigate the hypothesis that, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) of the cervical spinal cord, we would observe altered frequency-dependent activity in fibromyalgia. METHODS: Cervical spinal cord rs-fMRI was conducted in fibromyalgia patients (n = 16) and healthy controls (n = 17). We analyzed the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF), a measure of low-freq

The effects of acupuncture treatment on the right frontoparietal network in migraine without aura patients.

BACKGROUND: Functional and structural abnormalities in resting-state brain networks in migraine patients have been confirmed by previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies. However, few studies focusing on the neural responses of therapeutic treatment on migraine have been conducted. In this study, we tried to examined the treatment-related effects of standard acupuncture treatment on the right frontoparietal network (RFPN) in migraine patients. METHODS: A total of 12 migraine without aura (MWoA) patients were recruited to undergo resting-state fMRI scanning and were rescann

Structure Guides Function: Beyond Pairwise Neural Interactions.

A central theme in Jon Kaas' research, celebrated in this issue, is the relationship between brain structure and function. As a tribute, we examine how certain neuroanatomical structures enable higher order (higher arity) functions whose joint effects cannot be recovered from pairwise measurements. Specifically, we argue that neurons exploit coincident input detection to realize higher order operations that cannot be derived by studying any of the pairwise combinations in isolation. Pairwise statistics can miss these irreducible higher order (more-than-pairwise) effects. We advocate for an ext

Stretchable Neuromorphic Transistor That Combines Multisensing and Information Processing for Epidermal Gesture Recognition.

We fabricated a nanowire-channel intrinsically stretchable neuromorphic transistor (NISNT) that perceives both tactile and visual information and emulates neuromorphic processing capabilities. The device demonstrated excellent stretching endurance of 1000 stretch cycles while retaining stable electrical properties. The device was then applied as a multisensitive afferent nerve that processes information in parallel. Compatible with skin deformation, the devices are attached to fingers to serve as conformal strain sensors and neuromorphic information-processing units for gesture recognition. Th

Activation of expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor at the site of implantation of allogenic and xenogenic neural stem (progenitor) cells in rats with ischemic cortical stroke.

Ischemic stroke was modeled in the sensorimotor zone of the brain cortex in adult rats. Rat embryonic nervous tissue, neural stem cells from human olfactory epithelium, and rat fibroblasts (cell control) were implanted into the peri-infarction area of rats of different groups immediately after stroke modeling. Expression of BDNF mRNA was analyzed 7 days after surgery by real-time PCR. BDNF expression in cell preparation before their implantation was minimum. The expression of BDNF mRNA increased by 5-6 times in the areas of implantation of rat fibroblasts and human olfactory epithelium and by

Novel mutations in VANGL1 in neural tube defects.

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are severe congenital malformations caused by failure of the neural tube to close during neurulation. Their etiology is complex involving both environmental and genetic factors. We have recently reported three mutations in the planar cell polarity gene VANGL1 associated with NTDs. The aim of the present study was to define the role of VANGL1 genetic variants in the development of NTDs in a large cohort of various ethnic origins. We identified five novel missense variants in VANGL1, p.Ser83Leu, p.Phe153Ser, p.Arg181Gln, p.Leu202Phe and p.Ala404Ser, occurring in sporad

Expression of zebrafish fkd6 in neural crest-derived glia.

The zebrafish fkd6 gene is a marker for premigratory neural crest. In this study, we analyze later expression in putative glia of the peripheral nervous system. Prior to neural crest migration, fkd6 expression is downregulated in crest cells. Subsequently, expression appears initially in loose clusters of cells in positions corresponding to cranial ganglia. Double labelling with a neuronal marker shows that fkd6-expressing cells are not differentiated neurones and generally lie peripheral to neurones in ganglia. Later, expression appears associated with the posterior lateral line and other cra

Intracranial tumors with risk of dissemination in neuroaxis.

The experience of the Radiotherapy Service, Clínica Puerta de Hierro, Madrid (Spain), in the treatment of intracranial tumors with risk of neural axis dissemination is analyzed. In 15 years (1964-1979) 415 primary central nervous system tumors were studied and treated; 67 corresponded to tumors with risk of meningeal dissemination. Clinical dissemination in cerebrospinal fluid was proven in 14 patients. The actuarial survival of 10 years for patients with neural axis dissemination, without prophylactic treatment to the neuroaxis, is 14% with an average survival of 10.5 months. In approximately

When the self becomes other: toward an integrative understanding of the processes distinguishing adaptive self-reflection from rumination.

How can people adaptively analyze and "work through" negative feelings without ruminating? This paper will briefly review findings from an integrative program of research, which suggests that a critical factor determining whether people's attempts to adaptively reason about negative experiences succeed or fail is the type of self-perspective they adopt. That is, whether people analyze their feelings from a self-immersed or self-distanced perspective. The implications of shifting self-perspectives for subjective experience, autonomic nervous system reactivity, and neural activity are discussed.

The measurement of compound neural action potential in sciatic nerve using microelectrode array.

As a method of observing regeneration of damaged nerves, research is being conducted on analyzing the electric signals of nerve fibers that are damaged and regenerating by implanting a microelectrode array between those nerves. Microelectrode arrays possess high impedance and a unique phase characteristic according to their structural features, thus it requires a phase linearity test and an impedance test to prevent neural signal distortion. Therefore, this paper analyzes the features of microelectrode array and designs a bioamplifier. We also measured signals from sciatic nerves in rats with

Spontaneous Calcium Oscillations through Differentiation: A Calcium Imaging Analysis of Rat Cochlear Nucleus Neural Stem Cells.

Causal therapies for the auditory-pathway and inner-ear diseases are still not yet available for clinical application. Regenerative medicine approaches are discussed and examined as possible therapy options. Neural stem cells could play a role in the regeneration of the auditory pathway. In recent years, neural stem and progenitor cells have been identified in the cochlear nucleus, the second nucleus of the auditory pathway. The current investigation aimed to analyze cell maturation concerning cellular calcium activity. Cochlear nuclei from PND9 CD rats were microscopically dissected and propa

Efficient design of Airyprime chain optical bottle beams based on neural networks.

To meet the demand for stable trapping of multiple particles in complex environments and efficient design of multiple optical bottles, Airyprime chain optical bottle (ACOB) beams are proposed, and their structural features are efficiently designed using a neural network. The evolution properties of ACOB beams and the formation mechanism of chain optical bottles are analyzed, revealing the relationships between the number, maximum size, and formation position of the optical bottles and the optical field parameters. The neural network is trained to learn the nonlinear mapping from the optical fi

[Autoimmune encephalitis and paraneoplastic neurological syndromes presenting atypical parkinsonism: a scoping review].

Recent studies have demonstrated that atypical parkinsonism can be presented in autoimmune encephalitis and paraneoplastic neurological syndromes. However, it is unclear which anti-neural antibodies are involved and when these diseases should be suspected. To address these clinical questions, we conducted a scoping review and analyzed 38 articles. The literature shows that many anti-neural antibodies, including unknown ones, have been reported in progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal syndrome, and multiple system atrophy. Moreover, the following symptoms and signs suggest the possibilit

Using Neural Networks for Diagnosing in Dermatology.

The paper deals with neural networks for decision support in diagnosing in dermatology. There were several iterations during development. We classified six diseases using ANN: (1) Psoriasis, (2) Seborrheic dermatitis, (3) Lichen planus, (4) Pityriasis rosea, (5) Cronic dermatitis, (6) Pityriasis rubra pilaris. At first, we used all 35 attributes to conclude skin disease diagnosis with the accuracy of 96.9%. Then, we reduced the set of analyzed attributes by Pearson correlation approach to eight attributes and increased the accuracy to 98.64%. Data collection time was reduced. Thereby, the spee

Aerodigestive and communicative behaviors in anencephalic and hydranencephalic infants.

The aerodigestive and communicative behaviors of anencephalic and hydranencephalic patients are assessed from literature sources and are compared with documented neural structures present in the brainstem, subcortical, and cortical regions of the brain. Much of the data analyzed corroborate previous neurological studies, which focus on central pattern generators and development in model organisms. However, findings suggest that further research is necessary to determine which components of these systems support these behaviors. A low reporting rate of behavior in tandem with pathology is obser

Visual guidance in control of grasping.

Humans and other primates possess a unique capacity to grasp and manipulate objects skillfully, a facility pervasive in everyday life that has undoubtedly contributed to the success of our species. When we reach and grasp an object, various cortical areas in the parietal and frontal lobes work together effortlessly to analyze object shape and position, transform this visual information into useful motor commands, and implement these motor representations to preshape the hand before contact with the object is made. In recent years, a growing number of studies have investigated the neural circui

Neural correlates of spontaneous panic attacks.

In this report, we present two anxiety disorder patients who spontaneously experienced a panic attack during an fMRI examination and subsequently aborted the measurement. We analyzed the functional data gathered up to that point in relation to the patients' subsequent verbal reports of the course of the panic attacks. Within prominent structures of the fear network (amygdala, insula, prefrontal cortex) neural dynamics mirrored the description of the attack very well for one of the patients. For the other patient who experienced a less intense attack and who was treated pharmacologically at the
