Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common, heritable and disabling neuropsychiatric disorder. Theoretical models suggest that OCD is underpinned by functional and structural abnormalities in orbitofronto-striatal circuits. Evidence from cognitive and neuroimaging studies (functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET)) have generally been taken to be supportive of these theoretical models; however, results from these studies have not been entirely congruent with each other. With the advent of whole brain-based structural imaging techniqu

High-frequency deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the thalamus or basal ganglia represents an effective clinical technique for the treatment of several medically refractory movement disorders (e.g., Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia). In addition, new clinical applications of DBS for other neurologic and psychiatric disorders (e.g., epilepsy and obsessive-compulsive disorder) have been vaulted forward. Although DBS has been effective in the treatment of movement disorders and is rapidly being explored for the treatment of other neurologic disorders, the scientific understanding

The repetitive, stereotyped, and obsessive behaviors that characterize autism may in part be attributable to disruption of the region of the fronto-striatal system, which mediates executive abilities. Neuropsychological testing has shown that children with autism exhibit set-shifting deficiencies on tests such as the Wisconsin Card Sorting task but show normal inhibitory ability on variants of the Stroop color-word test. According to Minshew and Goldstein's multiple primary deficit theory, the complexity of the executive functioning task is important in determining the performance of individua

The robust behavior, the degree of response linearity, and the aspect of contrast gain control in visual cortical simple cells are (amongst others) the result of the interplay between excitatory and inhibitory afferent and intracortical connections. The goal of this study was to suggest a simple intracortical connection pattern, which could also play a role in other cortical substructures, in order to generically obtain these desired effects within large physiological parameter ranges. To this end we explored the degree of linearity of spatial summation in visual simple cells experimentally an

A patient affected by thoracic outlet syndrome, with an involvement of the left lower primary trunk due to a rudimentary cervical rib, developed a severe hand dystonia on the same side. The dystonic posture was characterised by a flexion of the wrist with the fingers curled into the palm. Polygraphic recordings performed on the left flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS4) and extensor digitorum superficialis (EDC4) muscles, during a repetitive tapping task of the fourth digit, showed a loss of well formed bursts without a clear silent period along with long duration bursts of cocontraction in an

1. A unitary study has been carried out of mitral and tufted cell responses to olfactory nerve volleys in the olfactory bulb of rabbits lightly anaesthetized with urethane-chloralose. 2. With volleys of different strengths, some mitral cells responded with a spike whose latency decreased considerably as the strength increased (elastic response); other cells responded at an invariant latency (inelastic response). The former may reflect diffuse olfactory nerve inputs to the dendritic tufts in the olfactory glomeruli, while tha latter may reflect input from discrete bundles of fibres. 3. The shor

To navigate its environment, an animal extracts salient information from sounds using temporal and intensity cues. In birds, the nucleus laminaris (NL) detects the submillisecond differences in the arrival time of sound to the two ears, the interaural time differences (ITDs), to localize sounds. This ability is facilitated by inhibitory long-range projection neurons from the ipsilateral superior olivary nucleus (SON) that enable NL neurons to remain sensitive to ITDs across a large range of sound intensities. It is well known that the excitatory inputs to NL, from nucleus magnocellularis (NM),

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cortical hyperexcitability has been identified as a diagnostic and pathogenic biomarker of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Cortical excitability is assessed by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive neurophysiological technique. The TMS biomarkers exhibiting highest sensitivity for cortical hyperexcitability in ALS remain to be elucidated. A meta-analysis was performed to determine the TMS biomarkers exhibiting the highest sensitivity for cortical hyperexcitability in ALS.
METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted of all relevant studi

Navigation engages many cortical areas, including visual, parietal, and retrosplenial cortices. These regions have been mapped anatomically and with sensory stimuli and studied individually during behavior. Here, we investigated how behaviorally driven neural activity is distributed and combined across these regions. We performed dense sampling of single-neuron activity across the mouse posterior cortex and developed unbiased methods to relate neural activity to behavior and anatomical space. Most parts of the posterior cortex encoded most behavior-related features. However, the relative stren

Much research has been devoted to investigating response inhibition and the neuronal processes constituting this essential cognitive faculty. However, the nexus between cognitive subprocesses, behavior, and electrophysiological processes remains associative in nature. We therefore investigated whether neurophysiological correlates of inhibition subprocesses merely correlate with behavioral performance or actually provide information expedient to the prediction of behavior on a single-subject level. Tackling this question, we used different data-driven classification approaches in a sample of n

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) of startle is an experimentally tractable measure of sensorimotor gating that can be readily evaluated in mice, rats, monkeys, and humans. PPI is the inhibitory effect of a low-intensity stimulus, the prepulse, on the startle response to a subsequent high-intensity stimulus. PPI has garnered great interest as a marker of clinically relevant information processing abnormalities, because it is impaired in such neuropsychiatric conditions as schizophrenia, Tourette syndrome, and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Pathology of the basal ganglia has been described in all

We investigated a patient with severe catatonic schizophrenia (manneristic catatonia according to Karl Leonhard) treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) after pharmacological approaches did not result in any clinical improvement. Before and after nine ECT sessions a double-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) paradigm was used to measure intracortical inhibition (ICI) which has been shown to be reduced in a significant proportion of patients with schizophrenia. Although the patient showed no remission regarding some psychomotor aspects after ECT, we found an increase in ICI and a

A developmental approach to the study of psychopathology can broaden understanding of a wide variety of complex psychological disorders. This article reviews research on Tourette's syndrome (TS), a developmental disorder characterized by unwanted motor and vocal tics. Over the past decade, knowledge of the neurobiology and pathophysiology of TS has progressed rapidly. The application of brain imaging techniques, primarily magnetic resonance imaging, to the study of Tourette's has increased knowledge of structural and functional deficits in brain areas associated with behavioral and psychologic

We determined the effects of specific carotid body chemoreceptor inhibition on the propensity for apnea during sleep. We reduced the responsiveness of the carotid body chemoreceptors using intravenous dopamine infusions during non-rapid eye movement sleep in six dogs. Then we quantified the difference in end-tidal Pco(2) (Pet(CO(2))) between eupnea and the apneic threshold, the "CO(2) reserve," by gradually reducing Pet(CO(2)) transiently with pressure support ventilation at progressively increased tidal volume until apnea occurred. Dopamine infusions decreased steady-state eupneic ventilation

The excitatory and inhibitory frequency/intensity response areas (FRAs) and spectrotemporal receptive fields (STRFs) of posterior auditory cortical field (PAF) single neurons were investigated in barbiturate anesthetized cats. PAF neurons' pure-tone excitatory FRAs (eFRAs) exhibited a diversity of shapes, including some with very broad frequency tuning and some with multiple distinct excitatory frequency ranges (i.e., multipeaked eFRAs). Excitatory FRAs were analyzed after selectively excluding spikes on the basis of spike response times relative to stimulus onset. This analysis indicated that

Methods have been developed to investigate recurrent inhibition (RI) in humans. A conditioning reflex discharge is used to evoke in motoneurones (MNs) supplying homonymous and synergistic muscles, an inhibition the characteristics of which are consistent with RI: it appears and increases with the conditioning motor discharge, has a short latency and a long duration, and is enhanced by an agonist of acetylcholine. As in the cat, homonymous RI exists in all explored motor nuclei of the limbs except those of the digits and the pattern of distribution of heteronymous RI closely matches that of mon

Models of information processing tasks such as character identification often do not consider the nature of the initial sensory representation from which task-relevant information is extracted. An important component of this representation is temporal inhibition, in which the response to a stimulus may inhibit, or in some cases facilitate, processing of subsequent stimuli. Three experiments demonstrate the existence of temporal inhibitory processes in information processing tasks such as character identification and digit recall. An existing information processing model is extended to account

Electrical and chemical synapses usually reinforce one another, but the pyloric late-to-lateral pyloric (PL-to-LP) neuronal connections in lobster stomatogastric ganglia create an inverted U-shaped transfer function between the two neurons: regardless of whether the PL membrane voltage swings positive or negative, the postsynaptic LP voltage will go negative. When the presynaptic cell voltage goes negative, the effect on the LP voltage is due to electrical coupling. During positive presynaptic voltages, the strong contribution of graded chemical inhibition from the PL to the LP neuron override
