Big Five personality domains and relationship satisfaction: Direct effects and correlated change over time.

OBJECTIVE: The Big Five Model (BFM) of personality domains is significantly related to romantic relationship outcomes, particularly marital satisfaction. Few studies to date, however, have examined the BFM domains and relationship outcomes longitudinally. METHOD: We used latent growth curve modeling to estimate the initial levels (intercept) and the rate of change (slope) in the BFM domains and marital satisfaction and determine if change in one construct was associated with change in the other. All available data were retained from participants who remained married to the same individual, as

Social phobia: an analysis of possible developmental factors.

Sixty-eight individuals with specific or generalized social phobia and 25 normal controls were assessed for presence of a family history of anxiety, childhood shyness, traumatic conditioning experiences, neuroticism, and extraversion. Subtype differences emerged, including significantly greater neuroticism and a more frequent history of shyness in the generalized subtype. Those with the generalized subtype also had significantly lower extraversion scores, and those with the specific subtype had a significantly higher frequency of traumatic conditioning episodes. Together, traumatic conditionin

Personality perspective on depression and anxiety symptoms among Chinese adolescents and young adults: a two-sample network analysis.

BACKGROUND: The mental health burden among adolescents has been increasing, impacting individuals even before formal diagnosis of common mental disorders. Although personality traits, as key indicators of mental health conditions, play a crucial role in the development of mental disorders, there is a gap regarding the trait-to-symptom pathways and similarities and differences between adolescents and young adults. METHODS: A total of 860 adolescents and 1751 young adults participated in this study. The Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory assessed the Big Five traits, while depression and an

The association between personality and dry eye disease: A large cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Personality influences health and wellbeing. The purpose of this large, cross-sectional study was to clarify the association between personality traits and dry eye disease (DED). METHODS: 78,610 participants from the Lifelines cohort were included. DED was assessed using the Women's Health Study (WHS) dry eye disease questionnaire. Three of the Big Five personality domains (neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness) were assessed using an abbreviated NEO Personality Inventory. Logistic regressions including age, sex, BMI, physical activity, smoking, education, income, and 48 medic

Prospective study of individual characteristics and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms following childbirth: Birth satisfaction as a moderator.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to (a) examine the association between childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) symptoms and possible risk factors of previous trauma, individual characteristics (neuroticism, anxiety sensitivity, and resilience), type of birth, and birth satisfaction and (b) explore whether birth satisfaction moderates any association between individual characteristics and CB-PTSD symptoms. METHOD: This was a longitudinal questionnaire study during pregnancy and postpartum. Pregnant women (N = 396) were recruited from antenatal clinics and completed que

Relationships Between Personality Traits and Perceived Stress in Surrogate Decision-Makers of Intensive Care Unit Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Personality traits, specifically neuroticism, are related to stress in surrogate decision-makers (SDMs) in outpatient settings. We hypothesized that intrinsic traits are related to SDM stress in the intensive care unit (ICU) to determine if personality considerations should be included in interventions to support SDMs. METHODS: Eligible participants (adult SDMs of non-capacitated ICU patients) completed validated questionnaires including stress (Impact of Events Scale-Revised, IES-R) and personality (Big Five Inventory, BFI) within 72 hours of ICU admission and again at 3 months

Genome-wide interaction study of a proxy for stress-sensitivity and its prediction of major depressive disorder.

Individual response to stress is correlated with neuroticism and is an important predictor of both neuroticism and the onset of major depressive disorder (MDD). Identification of the genetics underpinning individual differences in response to negative events (stress-sensitivity) may improve our understanding of the molecular pathways involved, and its association with stress-related illnesses. We sought to generate a proxy for stress-sensitivity through modelling the interaction between SNP allele and MDD status on neuroticism score in order to identify genetic variants that contribute to the

Personality factors in the Long Life Family Study.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate personality profiles of Long Life Family Study participants relative to population norms and offspring of centenarians from the New England Centenarian Study. METHOD Personality domains of agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism, and openness were assessed with the NEO Five-Factor Inventory in 4,937 participants from the Long Life Family Study (mean age 70 years). A linear mixed model of age and gender was implemented adjusting for other covariates. RESULTS: A significant age trend was found in all five personality domains. On average, the offspring

Personality testing in 226 patients with urinary incontinence.

Two hundred and twenty-six female patients undergoing investigation for urinary incontinence completed the Eysenck Personality Inventory questionnaire. The results of the questionnaire were correlated with the symptomatology and urodynamic findings. Incontinence and neuroticism were found to be related. No special relationship was found between neuroticism and detrusor overactivity, although this has been reported in other smaller series.

[Sense of coherence and stress in parents of children with chronic disease and mental health disorders].

QUESTION: The aim of this study was to examine parental sense of coherence (SOC) as a resource for coming to terms with their children's disease. Furthermore we examined the interaction between parental stress experience and SOC while controlling for neuroticism. 3 groups were compared: parents of children with (1) cystic fibrosis (CF, n = 35), (2) juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA, n = 31) and (3) mental health disorders (PSY, n = 34). METHODS: Parents were asked to complete the "Heidelberger Sense of Coherence Questionnaire", the "Parenting Stress Index" and the Neuroticism Scale of the "T

Link between personality and cancer.

Personality refers to an individual's enduring and pervasive personal motivation, emotion, interpersonal style, attitudes and behavior that are stable over a long time after young adulthood. In relation to the cancer trajectory, three basic and one other personality traits have been studied with some frequency, namely neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness and optimism. The considerable stability of personality over time makes it a potential long-acting etiological factor for the development of cancer. However, the studies performed so far do not give much support to personality as a cau

Five-factor personality traits and functional somatic disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Functional Somatic Disorders (FSD) is an umbrella term for various conditions characterized by persistent and troublesome physical symptoms, that are not better explained by other psychiatric or somatic conditions. Personality traits may play a crucial role in FSD, but the link is not fully understood. This study presents a systematic review and meta-analysis examines the relationship between the Five-Factor Model (FFM) of personality traits and FSD. METHODS: The review was based on the PRISMA statement, and drew data from systematic searches in PsycInfo, PubMed, and Embase. To

Bridging development and disturbance: A translational approach to the study of identity.

Across the subdisciplines of personality and clinical psychology, identity has been a psychological construct of wide-reaching importance in understanding both normative processes of human development as well as psychopathology. However, despite its wide-reaching importance, differences in the conceptualization and measurement of identity across these subdisciplines have contributed to more fragmentation, rather than unification, in our understanding of this central principle. In the present study, we sought to unify the measurement of identity across these subdisciplines through examining the

Notes from the Underground: Seeking the top personality correlates of self-referencing.

OBJECTIVE: Self-focused language use has been frequently assumed to reflect narcissism; however, research indicates that the association between first-person singular pronouns (i.e., "I-talk") and grandiose narcissism is negligible. METHOD: To extend this literature, we progressively identify vulnerable narcissism and rumination as positive correlates of I-talk in five studies (valid Ns = 211, 475, 1253, 289, 1113). RESULTS: The first study revealed positive correlates of I-talk suggestive of vulnerable narcissism. The second study showed more directly that vulnerable narcissism was a positi

Timing of Organ Procurement From Brain-Dead Donors Associates With Short- and Long-Term Outcomes After Liver Transplantation.

PURPOSE: The present study examined the prospective direct and interactive effects of personality (neuroticism, extraversion) and experiencing changes in friendships during the pandemic on symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. METHODS: A sample of patients (N = 77) at an outpatient treatment clinic who had received a diagnostic assessment in the 6 months prior to the COVID-19 lockdown was re-contacted during the pandemic (May-June 2020) and completed a survey assessing stressors and symptoms of internalizing psychopathology. RESULTS: Neuroticism had main effects on anxiety, whereas ex

Personality trait predictors of bipolar disorder symptoms.

The purpose of the current investigation was to examine the personality predictors of bipolar disorder symptoms, conceptualized as one-dimensional (bipolarity) or two-dimensional (mania and depression). A psychiatric sample (N=370; 45% women; mean age 39.50 years) completed the Revised NEO Personality Inventory and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory -2. A model in which bipolar symptoms were represented as a single dimension provided a good fit to the data. This dimension was predicted by Neuroticism and (negative) Agreeableness. A model in which bipolar symptoms were represented

On traits and temperament: general and specific factors of emotional experience and their relation to the five-factor model.

In this article we investigate relations between general and specific measures of self-rated affect and markers of Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness to Experience, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. Replicating previous research, we found strong and pervasive associations between Neuroticism, its facets, and the various negative affects; and between Extraversion, its facets, and the positive affects. Conscientiousness also had a significant, independent relation with general positive affect, but this effect was entirely due to the specific affect of attentiveness, which was more strongly

General personality dimensions, impairment and treatment response in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

General personality dimensions are associated with clinical severity and treatment response in individuals with depression and many anxiety disorders, but little is known about these relationships in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Individuals in the current study included 705 adults with OCD who had participated in family and genetic studies of the disorder. Participants self-completed the Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness Personality Inventory or Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness Five-Factor Inventory-3. Relationships between personality scores, and subjective impai

Personality variables modify the relationship between childhood maltreatment history and poor functional outcomes.

Childhood maltreatment history is a prevalent risk factor for substance use disorder and has lifelong adverse consequences on psychiatric wellbeing. The role of personality variations in determining childhood maltreatment-associated outcomes is poorly understood. This study sought to test neuroticism and agreeableness as mediator and moderator, respectively, of functional outcomes associated with having a history of childhood maltreatment and presence/absence of cocaine dependence. Ninety-four participants completed the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-IV), Childhood Trauma Quest
