Valorising CO2 for oxidative carboxylation of olefins.

Carbon capture and utilization has become of utmost importance and urgency to reduce CO2 concentration and use captured CO2 to synthesize high-value molecular building blocks. A widely exploited reaction is the oxidative carboxylation of olefins to cyclic carbonates, which allows both CO2 fixation and valuable product formation, under environment-friendly conditions. This paper is a perusal of molecular and material-based catalysts reported for this specific reaction, namely metal-based catalysts, nitrogen-based catalysts, oxides and nanocatalysts, with a particular focus on studies published

Diverse symbiovars nodulating cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) in highly adaptable agro-ecological zones in Mozambique.

The presence of effective microsymbionts in the soil and their compatibility with the host plant are the key determinants to the N2 fixation process. In Sub-Saharan Africa, nitrogen fixation in locally adapted cowpea and the distribution of their symbiovars are not well understood. The Aim of the study was to assess the distribution and symbiotic phylogenetic position of cowpea microsymbionts. Root nodules were sampled from various cowpea genotypes planted in Agro-Ecological Zone 7 and 8 (AEZ 7 and AEZ 8). Root-nodule bacteria were isolated and their molecular characterization was conducted. P…

Physiological and genomic insights into a psychrotrophic drought-tolerant bacterial consortium for crop improvement in cold, semiarid regions.

The agricultural land in the Indian Himalayan region (IHR) is susceptible to various spells of snowfall, which can cause nutrient leaching, low temperatures, and drought conditions. The current study, therefore, sought an indigenous psychrotrophic plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacterial inoculant with the potential to alleviate crop productivity under cold and drought stress. Psychrotrophic bacteria preisolated from the night-soil compost of the Lahaul Valley of northwestern Himalaya were screened for phosphate (P) and potash (K) solubilization, nitrogen fixation, indole acetic acid (IAA) produ…

Selenocyanate derived Se-incorporation into the nitrogenase Fe protein cluster.

The nitrogenase Fe protein mediates ATP-dependent electron transfer to the nitrogenase MoFe protein during nitrogen fixation, in addition to catalyzing MoFe protein-independent substrate (CO2) reduction and facilitating MoFe protein metallocluster biosynthesis. The precise role(s) of the Fe protein Fe4S4 cluster in some of these processes remains ill-defined. Herein, we report crystallographic data demonstrating ATP-dependent chalcogenide exchange at the Fe4S4 cluster of the nitrogenase Fe protein when potassium selenocyanate is used as the selenium source, an unexpected result as the Fe prote…

Regulation of lanthanide-dependent methanol oxidation pathway in the legume symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacterium Bradyrhizobium sp. strain Ce-3.

Lanthanide (Ln)-dependent XoxF-type methanol dehydrogenase (MDH) genes can be found in bacteria that are not believed to be methylotrophs, and studies on their methylotrophic pathways and their use of Ln are now emerging. Ln-dependent methanol utilization in Bradyrhizobium sp. strain Ce-3, which belongs to the Bradyrhizobium elkanii superclade (clade II), was investigated in this study. Strain Ce-3 was able to grow in a media containing methanol as a sole carbon source and light Ln (L-Ln, i.e., La3+, Ce3+, Pr3+, and Nd3+), whereas the strain did not show any growth with Ca2+ or the heavy Ln, S

Dual effects of tidal stress on carbon turnover by biochar incorporation in estuarine wetlands: Obscuring the promotion of plant CO2 fixation while magnifying carbon stabilization of sediments.

Estuarine wetlands, crucial in mitigating global warming, have suffered significant degradation, necessitating innovative restoration techniques to enhance their carbon sink capacity. This study investigated the dual effects of biochar incorporation in estuarine wetlands with tidal stress, utilizing a field experiment in the Chongming Dongtan wetland and a meta-analysis for cross-study comparison. Results indicated that while biochar incorporation slightly obscured the promotion of plant CO2 fixation (with a 1.24% decrease), it still augmented carbon sink capacity by magnifying the inhibition

Use of a nitrogen arm-stabilized endoscopic microdriver in neuroendoscopic surgery.

Stabilization and manipulation of instruments in endoscopic neurosurgery has traditionally been a manual task. Conventional self-retaining retractors have failed to provide reliable fixation for endoscopic procedures. Most surgeons rely on a team approach to endoscopy with one individual controlling the endoscope while the other manipulates instruments within the field of view. This two-surgeon approach is manpower intensive and not an option at many facilities. Recently developed technology provides the independent practitioner with another option. Several nitrogen-powered stabilizing arms ha

Drug-induced lysosomal storage of sulphated glycosaminoglycans.

1. Certain compounds (e.g., the immunomodulator tilorone and congeners) are able to induce lysosomal storage of sulphated glycosaminoglycans (GAG), thus, producing cytological and biochemical alterations reminiscent of the inherited mucopolysaccharidoses. The drug-induced GAG storage has been studied in cultured fibroblasts of several species and in rats, and it is likely to occur also in humans. 2. The cytological hallmarks of GAG storage are enlarged lysosomes congested with material that is intensely stained by cationic dyes. With respect to fixation techniques, one has to keep in mind that

Salicylate coordination in metal-protochelin complexes.

Molybdenum (Mo) is an essential trace element for bacteria that is utilized in myriad metalloenzymes that directly couple to the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon. In particular, Mo is found in the most common nitrogenase enzyme, and the scarcity and low bioavailability of Mo in soil may be a critical factor that contributes to the limitation of nitrogen fixation in forests and agroenvironments. To overcome this scarcity, microbes produce exudates that specifically chelate scarce metals, promoting their solubilization and uptake. Here, we have determined the structure and …

The role of nitrogenase in a cyanide-degrading Klebsiella oxytoca strain.

It is well known that the major function of nitrogenase is to fix atmospheric nitrogen. However, cyanide can also serve as a subtrate for nitrogenase and can be reduced to CH4 and NH4+. A cyanide-degrading Klebsiella oxytoca strain was isolated from cyanide contaminated water. This isolate was also found to have a nitrogen-fixation capability. Nitrogenase activities in this organism could be induced by KCN. However, there was no significant difference of the induction effect between 1 mM KCN and 5 mM KCN. It was found that the cyanide-degrading ability of this isolate could be inhibited by mul
