Fungal disease of the nose and paranasal sinuses.

Fungal infections of the nose and paranasal sinuses represent a spectrum of diseases ranging from colonization to invasive rhinosinusitis. Clinical manifestations are largely dependent on the immune status of the host, and given the ubiquitous nature of these organisms, exposure is unavoidable. Noninvasive disease includes asymptomatic fungal colonization, fungus balls, and allergic fungal rhinosinusitis. Invasive disease includes indolent chronic rhinosinusitis, granulomatous fungal sinusitis, and acute fulminant fungal rhinosinusitis. A differentiation of these somewhat overlapping syndromes

The nose, snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.

Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea are both due to multilevel anatomical obstruction, and the nose and nasal pathology both contribute in many cases. This paper addresses some of the issues surrounding the problem and briefly discusses the role of medication and nasal dilators and in more detail the implication of nasal surgery in various aspects of sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD). Nasal obstruction leads to mouth breathing, which destabilises the upper airway and aggravates SRBD.

Proboscis lateralis of nose-a case report.

INTRODUCTION: People living in rural and remote areas have poorer health and more limited access to health services than those in urban areas. Adolescence, generally a period of optimum health, is fraught with risky health behaviours, increasing morbidity and mortality. Increasingly, mental health problems including depression, alcohol and drug use, suicide, self-harm, sexual health, inappropriate nutrition and physical activity are key areas of adolescent health concern in Queensland, Australia. To address the health and well being needs of young people the School Based Youth Health Nurse (SB

[Observations on the anatomy and physiology of the mammalian noses].

From the anatomical and flow dynamic point of view, the mammalian noses are strictly divided in a respiratory and olfactory area. In humans, the middle and the superior turbinate (ethmoturbinates) fulfill the respiratory and olfactory function. An intensive contact between breathing air and respiratory mucosa is the most important pre-condition for the respiratory function of the nose. In all investigated species this contact takes place in the functional area of the nose, i. e. the area of the turbinates. In humans, the area from the external nasal ostium up to the head of the inferior turbin

Granulomatous disorders of the nose and paranasal sinuses.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review granulomatous findings in sinus and nasal tissue as part of a diagnostic indicator of various disease states, focusing on the role of further testing and evaluation to clarify this diagnosis as well as the implications for patient care. RECENT FINDINGS: Inflammatory and infectious diseases as well as neoplasms, cocaine abuse and trauma may have rhinosinus granulomatous findings as part of the disease state. The need for careful histopathologic evaluation as well as the pitfalls and caveats of laboratory testing will be reviewed in this paper. Some infections such

Classification and treatment of the saddle nose deformity.

The saddle nose deformity results from a disruption in the nose's integral support mechanisms. Reconstructive surgeons must not only reestablish facial aesthetic contours but also rebuild the nose's structural framework while preserving or restoring nasal function. The causes and the classification of saddle nose deformities are reviewed, and the preferred techniques of correction and reconstruction are illustrated.

Treatment of the posttraumatic and postrhinoplasty crooked nose.

Successful management of the persistently crooked nose after a previous trauma or surgery is best achieved through careful analysis of the problem and clear communication with the patient regarding his or her goals of revision surgery. To address the nose in a systematic fashion, the surgeon should divide the crooked nose into horizontal thirds with appropriate management directed toward the structural abnormality in each third. A review of the treatment of the postrhinoplasty and posttraumatic crooked nose is presented with an emphasis on re-establishing structural support and improving appea

The nose: gatekeeper and trigger of bronchial disease.

The nose is strategically placed at the entrance of the airway. Nose breathing takes place under physiologic circumstances and protects the lower airways from exposure to unconditioned air and exogenous particles. Alternatively, nasal disease may have a negative impact on lower airway biology, being involved in aggravation of bronchial disease. The interaction between upper and lower airway disease has been recognized for centuries. Due to the increase in prevalence of allergic diseases during the last decades, new interest has been gained in understanding the mechanisms underlying the interac

[Nasal symptoms in persons with normal nose].

BACKGROUND: Nasal symptoms such as sneezing, stuffy nose and runny nose occur in allergic and nonallergic rhinitis. Normal nose also sometimes has these symptoms. It is necessary to define what is the symptom of normal nose in order to make a proper diagnosis of rhinitis, grading of severity of nasal symptom in rhinitis and criteria of normalization after the treatment of rhinitis. METHODS: 235 persons who had no perceptive nasal symptom and history of nasal disease at present and past, and cold at present, were sampled from the registered list of a health care organization, and examined thei

"A shine on the nose": sexual metaphors in surrealism.

This essay explores a curious phenomenon in the work of several European surrealist artists, notably Hans Bellmer and René Magritte, from the late 1920s through the 1950s: In images of the body, a penis may appear in place of a nose; breasts, testicles, or buttocks stand in for the eyes of a face, a vaginal opening for the nostrils, an anus for the mouth. Alternatively, disembodied arms and legs or an elongated neck take on a phallic character, or the entire body becomes an erect penis. Aside from the shock value of these disconcerting substitutions, for which the Surrealists surely strove, wh

New techniques for management of the crooked nose.

The crooked or twisted nose results from a complex deformity of the bony pyramid, the upper and lower cartilaginous vaults, and the septum and causes functional and aesthetic problems. The forces of scar contracture coupled with long-standing cartilage deformation may make the crooked nose resistant to conventional surgical intervention. The middle vault of the nose may exhibit deformities that are due to atrophy, deviations, and skewing in relationship to the other regions of the nose. We report a series of 79 cases of significantly crooked noses to highlight 5 techniques not widely discussed

Teratocarcinosarcoma of the nose, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx.

Teratomas affecting the head and neck are rare tumours of ambiguous origin. The benign form is seen in children and mostly affects the nasopharynx. Malignant tumours in the upper jaw have been reported rarely. They are almost exclusively seen in the adult male. They are highly aggressive tumours that are difficult to diagnose pre-operatively due to the varied histological patterns. Treatment options available are surgery, radiotherapy or a combination of both. Despite intensive treatment, the prognosis is still poor. A rare case of teratocarcinosarcoma of the nose, paranasal sinuses and nasoph

Pemphigus vulgaris localized to the nose and cheeks.

Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune blistering disease characterized by disseminated bullae and erosions of the mucosal surfaces and skin. Cases of pemphigus vulgaris with localized lesions on glabrous skin have been reported, and most of them have been attributed to the Koebner phenomenon. Lesions limited to the nose have mostly been described in pemphigus foliaceus, but the nose has also been the initial site of pemphigus vulgaris in a few patients. We report 4 cases of localized pemphigus vulgaris: one case with lesions limited to the nose and cheeks and 3 cases with isolated lesions on the
