Dysfunctional variants of ABCG2 create strong individual and population risks for progression of hyperuricemia: the potential for implementation of genome-personalized nursing.

Gout, a common disease, develops after prolonged hyperuricemia with elevated serum uric acid (SUA) levels. Sex, overweight/obesity, heavy drinking, and aging all increase risk. Common dysfunctional variants (polymorphisms) in the ABCG2/BCRP gene are major genetic causes of gout/hyperuricemia. Early management would thus have potential benefits for public health. Several studies report the effectiveness of nurse-led care for gout management. We evaluate here the individual and population genetic effects of ABCG2 in 9244 Japanese study participants, in all of whom ABCG2 variants had a higher pop

Migration intentions among nursing students in a low-middle-income country.

BACKGROUND: Migration among skilled labour has been noted as one of the major issues in recent times, especially among health workers. Data from the United Nations show that almost two thirds of people migrating are labor migrants and international migrants constitute 3.5% of the global migration population. Out of the millions of people who migrate across the globe, health workers, especially nurses form a greater portion of these numbers. This study explored nursing students' intention to migrate to other countries after completing their programs. METHOD: A descriptive cross-sectional desig

Nurse-Led Heart Failure Clinics Are Associated With Reduced Mortality but Not Heart Failure Hospitalization.

Background Follow-up in a nurse-led heart failure ( HF ) clinic is recommended in HF guidelines, but its association with outcomes remains controversial, with previous studies including few and highly selected patients. Thus, large analyses of "real-world" samples are needed. Aims were to assess: (1) independent predictors of and (2) prognosis associated with planned referral to nurse-led HF clinics. Methods and Results We analyzed data from the SwedeHF (Swedish HF Registry) using multivariable logistic regressions to identify independent predictors of planned referral to a nurse-led HF clinic

The experience of eating for older nursing home residents with dysphagia: A qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the experience of eating for nursing home residents with dysphagia is essential for developing effective and holistic compensatory intervention programmes for older adults with dysphagia. However, there is a lack of studies on the experience of eating for older adults with dysphagia, especially for individuals in Asian cultures. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to understand the experience of eating for older nursing home residents who have difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), which is often a problem for this population. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study recrui

Calves' management conditions affect sperm count in adult bulls.

BACKGROUND: Early maternal separation may have long-lasting physiological effects on different organ systems. Although long-lasting effects of early maternal separation are mostly studied in connection with the development and function of the central nervous system hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, animal health, behaviour and productivity, there is a lack of information about its impacts on the reproductive system. In the dairy industry, calves are often separated from mothers 1 or 2 days after birth and are not nursed. In the present retrospective study based on data from an artificial in

Perinatal exercise improves glucose homeostasis in adult offspring.

Emerging research has shown that subtle factors during pregnancy and gestation can influence long-term health in offspring. In an attempt to be proactive, we set out to explore whether a nonpharmacological intervention, perinatal exercise, might improve offspring health. Female mice were separated into sedentary or exercise cohorts, with the exercise cohort having voluntary access to a running wheel prior to mating and during pregnancy and nursing. Offspring were weaned, and analyses were performed on the mature offspring that did not have access to running wheels during any portion of their l

Rotated nursing environment with underfeeding: A form of early-life adversity with sex- and age-dependent effects on coping behavior and hippocampal neurogenesis.

We investigated how a unique form of early-life adversity (ELA), caused by rotated nursing environment to induce underfeeding, alters anxiety-like and stress-coping behaviors in male and female Sprague Dawley rats in adolescence and adulthood. Adult female rats underwent either thelectomy (thel; surgical removal of teats), sham surgery, or no surgery (control) before mating. Following parturition, litters were rotated between sham and thel rats every 12 h to generate a group of rats that experienced ELA (rotated housing, rotated mother, and 50% food restriction) from postnatal day 0 to 26. Risk factors for 30-day readmission in patients with congestive heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Risk of readmission is elevated in patients congestive heart failure (CHF), and clinical decision makers need to better understand risk factors for 30-day readmissions. OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors for readmission in patients with CHF. METHODS: We studied all admissions for patients with CHF during 2011 using a statewide discharge data set from Pennsylvania. The primary outcome was readmission to any Pennsylvania hospital within 30 days of discharge. RESULTS: Of 155,146 CHF patients admitted, 35,294 (22.8%) were readmitted within 30 days. Knowledge, economic, and WASH challenges affecting menstrual health and hygiene among nursing students in Bangladesh using a mixed-methods approach.

Menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) remain stigmatized and neglected in low- and middle-income countries such as Bangladesh due to cultural taboos, poor infrastructure, and limited education. This study examines how knowledge, socioeconomic background, and WASH facilities are associated with key MHH indicators. A convergent mixed-methods design was applied between December 2024 and January 2025, combining a survey of 370 students from seven public nursing institutions with six focus group discussions involving 21 female and 21 male students for gendered understanding. Quantitative data were ana

When size matters: a clinical review of pathological micropenis.

Micropenis is a significantly small penis with normal internal male genitalia. Micropenis is usually diagnosed shortly after birth, and the cause should be established; in addition, it should be differentiated from other associated syndromes. The role of the pediatric nurse practitioner is to diagnose the micropenis, guide the parents through the options of management, and support all involved through the selected treatment, whether hormonal or surgical. Patients affected with micropenis will need long-term management from their pediatric nurse practitioners, as well as follow-up by endocrinol

Perceptions and attitudes toward obesity care among nursing professionals.

BACKGROUND: The understanding of obesity is evolving from a perceived lifestyle-related condition to a chronic, biologically driven disease. Perception of obesity as a disease among health care professionals is important for effective evidence-based obesity care. Nurses have the most sustained patient contact and play an important role in obesity prevention and management, yet their role in this context remains underexplored. We therefore assessed the perceptions and attitudes towards obesity and obesity care in a Slovenian nursing care cohort. METHODS: Non-interventional, descriptive, cross-

Lactation is not required for maintaining maternal care and active coping responses in chronically stressed postpartum rats: Interactions between nursing demand and chronic variable stress.

Women who do not breastfeed or discontinue breastfeeding early are more likely to develop postpartum depression (PPD) and stress is a significant risk factor for depression, including PPD. Using a rat model, we investigated whether the absence of nursing would increase the susceptibility to chronic stress-related behavioral and neural changes during the postpartum period. Adult female rats underwent thelectomy (thel; removal of teats), sham surgery, or no surgery (control) and were paired with males for breeding. All litters were rotated twice daily until postpartum day (PD) 26. Sham rats serv
