Health effects associated with occupational exposure to hand-arm or whole body vibration.

Workers in a number of different occupational sectors are exposed to workplace vibration on a daily basis. This exposure may arise through the use of powered-hand tools or hand-transmitted vibration (HTV). Workers might also be exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) by driving delivery vehicles, earth moving equipment, or through use of tools that generate vibration at low dominant frequencies and high amplitudes, such as jackhammers. Occupational exposure to vibration has been associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal pain in the back, neck, hands, shoulders, and hips. Occupational

Evidence of vaccine protection among thai medical students and implications for occupational health.

In a cross-sectional study of Thai medical students, we compared the seroprevalence of antibody to measles virus, rubella virus, varicella zoster virus, hepatitis A virus, and hepatitis B virus with self-reports of prior infection or vaccination. Self-report predicted immunity to varicella zoster virus only. These data contribute to risk assessment and occupational health strategies in this resource-limited setting.

Dipping and coating operations. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Labor. Final rule.

OSHA's standards for dipping and coating operations, codified at sections 1910.108 and 1910.94(d), are designed to protect employees from fire, explosion, and other hazards associated with these operations. On April 7, 1998 (63 FR 16918), OSHA published proposed revisions to these standards in the Federal Register. The Federal Register announcement requested comments on the proposed rule, as well as on three major issues identified by OSHA. Based on these comments and other considerations, the Agency has developed the final standard to accomplish several goals: To rewrite the former standards

Evolution of occupational health risks among waste incinerator workers: A four-decade review.

This review synthesizes four decades of global research (1980 to 2025) on occupational health risks among workers in municipal, medical, and hazardous waste incineration facilities. It examines how evolving technologies, waste streams, and regulations have shaped exposure patterns and health outcomes. Early studies reported high exposures to dioxins and heavy metals, linked to respiratory illness, skin conditions, and potential cancer risks. While modern emission controls have substantially lowered exposures, especially in high-income countries, residual risks to the respiratory, cardiovascula…

Exploring Reimbursement Pathways for Lifestyle Medicine and Health Promotion Services in Occupational Therapy.

Occupational therapy practitioners are uniquely qualified and positioned to offer both preventive and rehabilitative models of care. However, the status quo of current reimbursement models has created a barrier to occupational therapy practitioners receiving adequate reimbursement, if any, for doing health promotion and lifestyle-focused work. In this Health Policy Perspectives article, we emphasize the need for reimbursement and propose pathways for new and perhaps untapped or underutilized models of reimbursement for occupational therapy practitioners. These pathways require education and ad

Occupational Infection Risk with Multidrug-Resistant Organisms in Health Personnel-A Systematic Review.

The increase in multi-drug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in the last years has become a public health problem. MDROs are partially responsible for numerous nosocomial infections, extended hospital stays, high costs, and high mortality. In addition to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), Gram-negative bacteria are also a key area of focus. The knowledge of MDROs among the medical staff in the occupational context is limited, with the exception of MRSA. Therefore, a systematic review was carried out to determine the occupational risk for em

[Sleep-disordered breathing in occupational places: from screening to Health and Productivity Management].

BACKGROUND: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), represented by sleep apnea, is highly prevalent in the general population and is associated with alcohol intake and obesity. Since SDB is further associated with hypertension, diabetes, and future cardiovascular diseases, as well as accidents and injuries in workplaces, there is a need for complete SDB assessment in workers, including screening and the application of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. RESULTS: Currently, it appears that SDB assessment is not sufficiently conducted, even among commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers, despite CMV

Occupational Risk of Latent Tuberculosis Infection in Health Workers of 14 Military Hospitals.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a known occupational risk to health workers. Identifying risk factors in health care settings is critical to the prevention of TB for health workers and patients. In 2014, we carried out a TB screening and survey for 902 health workers from 14 selected military hospitals to determine the prevalence rate of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) as well as occupational risk factors. Of all subjects, 19.5% reported having provided TB patient care for 1 year or more (176/902), and 26.9% (243/902) were positive for the tuberculin skin test (TST) (10 mm or more of induration). Ad
