BACKGROUND: In gliomas, c-myc proto-oncogene expression has been found to correlate with the grade of malignancy, with low expression in Grade I and II and high expression in Grade III and IV tumors. We aimed to discover if myc expression is of prognostic significance in glioblastomas.
METHODS: Expression of the c-myc, N-myc, and L-myc proto-oncogenes and of the max gene was investigated in 46 supratentorial glioblastomas from adult patients using in situ hybridization.

INTRODUCTION: The association between genital Bowen Disease (BD) and human papillomavirus (HPV) especially HPV-16 infection is well known, but it is more rarely related to extragenital BD. The aim of this study was to detect the presence of oncogenic HPV infection in the BD of the hands considering the histology and the presence of oncogenic HPV detected by in situ hybridization (ISH) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eleven formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded samples of BD of the hands were selected. We looked for koilocytosis using standard histological procedure.

Oncogenic osteomalacia is an unusual and rare clinicopathologic syndrome characterized by mesenchymal tumors that apparently produce osteomalacia and biochemical abnormalities consisting of hypophosphatemia, normocalcemia, and increased levels of alkaline phosphatase. We collected from the Mayo Clinic files and from our consultation files the records for 17 cases of osteomalacia associated with bone lesions. A transformant having ret-II was obtained by transfection of NIH3T3 cells with DNA from a human sigmoid colon cancer. Three cases of connective tissue tumors causing hypophosphatemic osteomalacia are reported and the literature is reviewed. In two of our patients the tumors were completely excised with total disappearance of the symptoms. In one case a total excision was not possible and the symptoms of this patient have not completely disappeared. The first evidence for the oncogenic potential of human papillomaviruses (HPVs) was obtained through the study of epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV). This rare skin disease is characterized by disseminated, refractor, pityriasis versicolor-like lesions as well as flat wart-like lesions, and by the development of skin carcinomas in about 30% of the patients. We describe a case of primary myelofibrosis which terminated in an acute megakaryoblastic leukaemia with massive marrow fibrosis and osteosclerosis.
