Parenting as a Moderator of the Relation Between Child Inhibited Temperament and Anxiety in Western Contexts: A Systematic Review.

The literature on the role of parenting in the relation between child inhibited temperament and child anxiety is inconsistent, with some literature supporting a moderating role and some literature supporting alternative (e.g., mediating) roles. A systematic review of the evidence that parenting moderates the longitudinal relation between child inhibited temperament and child anxiety is needed. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in February and March of 2022 and repeated in January of 2024. Ten articles met criteria for inclusion, with 39 moderation analyses of interest among t

The Swedish social services' police reporting and children's access to protection and support in child abuse cases: A quantitative content analysis.

BACKGROUND: The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child prohibits all forms of violence against children. Sweden was early in introducing a ban on disciplinary violence; however, difficulties have been noted in identifying children in need of protection and providing help for children exposed to violence. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore the social services' police reporting and children's access to protection and support in cases of physical and sexual child abuse. METHODS: The sample consisted of 291 child welfare reports from three Swedish municipalities. Data were co

Update on child maltreatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The authors explore the literature published in the past year addressing child maltreatment issues, including sexual abuse, physical child abuse, inflicted head trauma, and child abuse prevention. RECENT FINDINGS: The body of knowledge about child abuse and its mimics continues to expand. Evident in this year's literature is the challenge which the diagnosis of child abuse creates for clinicians. Although further strides are being made toward universal education of providers, it is clear that there is still a reluctance to report abuse to child welfare agencies. The legal r

Child abuse and dentistry: a study of knowledge and attitudes among Nigerian dentists.

Child abuse is recognized globally as a major public health issue and in recent years, Nigerian communities have become increasingly aware of this problem. Numerous studies have revealed that the head and oro-facial region are common sites of trauma from child abuse. For this reason, dentists are in a strategic position to recognize and report suspected cases. The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge and attitudes of Nigerian dentists towards child abuse. A descriptive survey was conducted among 175 dentists in Nigeria. Results revealed that physical abuse, neglect and emotional abuse w

[Welcoming languages into the private practice of a speech therapist].

In their private practice, speech therapists work with multilingual children. Taking their mother tongue into account not only enhances their skills and supports their parents, but also enables the professional to listen and provide more precise support for the child. Working with an interpreter, thanks in particular to Avicenne's language assessment for allophones and new arrivals, enables us to take a step back and listen differently to the child's difficulties.

[Acceleration of postnatal development, hypertony, enlargement of the middle phalanges and of the distal metaphyses of the femur, peculiar facies: a case of Weaver's syndrome?].

A child is described with accelerated bone maturation, large dysplastic ears, and hypertelorism. These are features of both the Marshall-Smith and Weaver's syndrome. The child was mentally retarded and had enlargement of the middle phalanges, features only seen in Marshall-Smith syndrome. However, there was also enlargement of the metaphyses, a characteristic of Weaver's syndrome. The possiblity that these syndromes may represent different manifestations of the same entity is discussed.

[Two cases of symptomatic arachnoid cysts in elderly patients--a comparison and analysis with child cases].

A symptomatic arachnoid cyst in an elderly patient is rare. We report two cases of symptomatic arachnoid cysts in elderly patients. The first case is that of a 73-year-old woman complaining of headache and speech disturbance. She had an arachnoid cyst in the left interhemispheric fissure. This is rare. Only two interhemispheric arachnoid cysts in the elderly have ever been reported. The other case is that of a 64-year-old woman, having right hemiparesis and dementia and a cyst is shown in her left temporal lobe. Both patients underwent a cystectomy which resulted in the disappearance of their

Liver transplantation in a child with liver cirrhosis caused by langerhans cell histiocytosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare condition that has a variety of clinical manifestations. But LCH in children localized only in the hepatobiliary system is unusual. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we reported a rare case of a 2-year-old boy who was serendipitously found to have elevated liver enzymes while undergoing treatment of a perianal abscess. After a period of earlier conservative treatment in another hospital, the perianal abscess had resolved but the levels of liver enzymes were still rising slowly. The child was then referred to our institution for a definitive diag

Alpha-mannosidosis: a report of 2 siblings and review of the literature.

Alpha-mannosidosis is a rare lysosomal storage disorder with a heterogeneous clinical presentation. We describe a set of siblings with alpha-mannosidosis. The older child presented with a severe phenotype with multisystem involvement and had progressive deterioration in her motor and cognitive functioning. She had a poor outcome. The second child has a less severe disease course. He is being managed symptomatically only because of the family's poor socioeconomic circumstances. Therapeutic options in this condition are limited to bone marrow transplant early in the disease course. These disorde

A process model of attachment-friend linkages: hostile attribution biases, language ability, and mother-child affective mutuality as intervening mechanisms.

This study identified mechanisms through which child-mother attachment security at 36 months was associated with mother- and teacher-reported friendship quality at 3rd grade. Data from a subsample of 1,071 children (536 boys) participating in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development were used. Separate structural equation models were tested for mother and teacher reports of peer functioning. For both models, the total indirect effect between attachment security and friendship quality was significant. Tests of specific indirect

[Pyoderma gangrenosum in an infant: Case report].

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis of unknown etiology, characterized by ulcers, especially on the lower limbs. There have only been 13 cases of PG in infants (<12 months old) reported in the past 25 years. We report the case of a 9-month-old child with ulcers on the right leg diagnosed as pyoderma gangrenosum. Tissue cultures for bacteria, mycobacteria, and fungus were negative. The child was treated with prednisone 1 mg/Kg/day for 30 days, with complete healing of the lesions during this period. No underlying diseases have been identified in the last two years, but t

Child sexual abuse suspicions: treatment considerations during investigation.

This article addresses what, if any, psychotherapeutic interventions should be provided to meet the emotional and clinical needs of alleged child victims of sexual abuse while they await judicial determinations from the family, dependency, or criminal courts. The discussion emphasizes that to minimize iatrogenic outcomes, professionals involved in sexual abuse allegation cases should carefully establish and maintain professional role boundaries and take on only one role in a case. Professional roles may include an investigative forensic interviewer, court appointed forensic evaluator, and ther

Associations between left-behind children's characteristics and psychological symptoms: a cross-sectional study from China.

BACKGROUND: Parent-child separation poses a significant challenge for left-behind children (LBC). However, limited empirical evidence exists regarding the correlation between left-behind characteristics and the psychological symptoms of LBC. This study investigated psychological symptoms among LBC and explored associations between left-behind characteristics and those symptoms. METHODS: Using stratified cluster sampling, 1,832 LBC aged 13-18 years from three cities in East China were selected for analysis. Participants' depression and anxiety symptoms were assessed with the Patient Health Que

Engaging fathers to strengthen the impact of early home visitation on physical child abuse risk: Findings from the dads matter-HV randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing recognition of the importance of fathers in child abuse risk, the field of perinatal home visitation has only begun to consider fathers' roles in the implementation of such services. OBJECTIVES: This study examines the effectiveness of Dads Matter-HV ("DM-HV"), a father-inclusion enhancement to home visitation, and hypothesized mediators of impact. METHODS: A multisite cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted with 17 home visiting program teams serving 204 families across study conditions. Childhood sexual abuse, attachment, and trauma symptoms in college females: the moderating role of attachment.

OBJECTIVE: The present study tests a model linking attachment, childhood sexual abuse (CSA), and adult psychological functioning. It expands on previous work by assessing the degree to which attachment security moderates the relationship between a history of child sexual abuse and trauma-related symptoms in college females. METHOD: Self-reports of attachment, childhood sexual abuse, and adult psychological functioning were obtained from 324 female undergraduate students attending a Southeastern U.S. university. Separate analyses were conducted examining the potential moderating role for close

[Diaplacental transmission of varicella zoster virus antibodies after chickenpox at the time of birth].

A pregnant woman with post-term birth developed a varicella rash on the day, when birth was to be initiated. The date was then postponed, until varicella zoster virus (VZV) IgG-antibodies could be proved in the mother, so as to allow the child to achieve an adequate diaplacental passive immunisation. Cesarean section was performed on the 7th day after the rash, but a comparison of the child's blood (from the umbilical cord) with the mother's blood showed, that the VZV antibodies developed by the mother during this time were only present in a tenfold reduced amount in the child. Antibodies to h

Preparing for the next round: convalescent care after acute infection.

Infections pose a nutritional stress on the growing child. No therapeutic goal is as important as the rapid recovery of preillness weight after acute infections. Successful convalescence, with supernormal growth rates, can be achieved with relatively brief periods of intensive refeeding, offsetting any tendency toward reduced immune defenses or other nutritionally determined susceptibilities to further infection. Since the mother is the only person who can effectively manage convalescent care, she must be given specific tasks with measurable targets in order to reliably oversee the child's reh
